Chapter 141: 141. Side Story 5: Alan’s gift.
Janey had prayed that if he was for her, God should make him come to church again. And although her faith had wavered a little, God answered her prayers and brought the man to church.
Didn’t that mean he was meant for her? This thought made Janey become even bolder in approaching him the next Sunday to say hi. And the Sunday after that Sunday, and the Sunday after the Sunday after that Sunday.
And after about six Sundays had passed by he’d become a frequent face in the church and she’d gotten used to seeing him and saying hi to him every Sunday morning.
Then on the seventh Sunday which was the first Sunday in the month of April, Janey mustered up the courage to ask him, "C_can I get your phone number?"
Alan, who was waiting for Duke, Champagne and the twins to return from the pastor’s office, had to force back a smile as she asked that question.
She wasn’t the only one who had gotten used to their little greetings on Sundays.
Even he looked forward to every close of service when either of them would walk up to each other and say simple greetings like, "Hi, how was the service today?" And the other person would answer with how well the service has been, sometimes he’d confess that he slept through some part of the sermon and she’d laugh beautifully and tell him things like, "God is watching you. Don’t let him catch you sleeping in his house." And he’d chuckle.
They never spoke anything serious really. Just light greetings. Whoever was the first to see the other would walk up to them and say hi.
This Sunday was the same. Alan while waiting by the car for the rest of his family he had been scanning the area with his eyes to find her. When he didn’t see her, his feet had strolled around the place as his eyes searched for her. When he still hadn’t found her, he returned to where the car was parked and continued waiting for her there.
That’s where she popped out in front of him with a wide smile on her face and waved saying, "Happy Sunday, Happy new month."
Alan stared down at her rosy cheeks. It was obvious she was shy in front of him yet she would boldly walk up to him every time to say hi. Damn she was too adorable.
"Happy Sunday and a Happy new month to you too, Janey." He says.
"I brought this for you." She lifts her hand in front of him and she’s holding up a small bag. Embarrassed that he’s just staring at her with unasked questions, she decides to explain further. "Uhm, well, my momma usually bakes stuff on the first Sunday of every new month for the children, s_so I uhm, I thought I would give you one."
"Oh, I see. Do I look like a child?" He asks just to see her reaction and the way her eyes widen with fear of being misunderstood is so freaking adorable that it made Alan want to poke her big brown eyes with his fingers.
"N_no, uhm, tha_that is not what I meant," the poor girl stuttered through her words trying to maintain eye contact while also trying to make her intentions clear. "I_ I_ I just thought about you when we were baking it and I thought I would take out some for you." Scratching her head in confusion and worry, Janey wondered how she would make him understand that she didn’t mean she saw him as a child. Far from it.
How could she see such a perfect man as a child?
"Oh, please don’t misunderstand me. Uhm, h_how do I explain this?" She stuttered as she was starting to panic because she wasn’t sure her explanation alone would suffice to clear up any form of misunderstanding.
"You thought about me?" The sudden breach of distance, the sudden intrusion of space caused her breath to cease and her eyes to dilate. Her entire face heated up almost instantaneously as he brought his head to her level, leaning in closer to her, staring directly into her face!
"Hm? Did you think about me, Janey?" He asks again and Alan couldn’t tell why but seeing her going redder and redder with every second that passed by with his face right in front of hers, made him excited.
It made him want to know how red she could turn.
"J_Janey, breathe." He suddenly says as his eyes shift to her neck and he realizes she’s holding in air. "Breathe, Janey. Let it out. Breathe." He says, because it seemed she had forgotten to breathe. "Breathe Janey."
This time, Janey is snapped back into reality and a hiccup escapes her throat. Embarrassed, she slaps a hand over her mouth and lowers her eyes, now breathing once again, but with hiccups.
Once again, Alan thought to himself, ’damn, she is so cute. She has no idea how cute she is. Even her blinking is freaking cute.’
Her hand holding up the small gift bag slowly withdrew back to her body for she was beyond embarrassed now, but then, his hand clasped over hers and the warmth of his hand instantly flushed out the embarrassment she felt as she looked up at him and saw a smile on his face.
"I was only teasing you." He says and straightens back to his full height, "Thank you." He adds and finally takes the bag from her.
It was worth it!! Getting her hands burnt while she baked those cookies was worth it! That smile was worth every second she spent on those cookies!
And did he just say he was teasing her?!
Janey wondered if they’d gotten close enough to tease each other, then it made her heart flutter that someone like him would tease someone like her.
Well, he just accepted her gift, so maybe they’d really gotten close enough.
She was beyond happy to know that they’d gotten closer than just saying hi to each other. Step by step, she told herself.
"I made those, so I hope you enjoy them." She chuckles bashfully with her hands clasped together in front of her at her waist level.
"You? Not your mom?" Alan asks.
She brings her hand in front of her and shakes them along with her head while saying, "Oh no, no, no."
