Chapter 34: Chapter 24: Do I Look Like I’m Joking With You?_2

Howard Geoffrey frowned slightly. "Did your father tell you everything?"

Rebecca Quentin took a deep breath and replied, "Yes, I knew from the beginning... I’m just a substitute."

"A substitute?"

Not noticing the confusion in Howard Geoffrey’s voice, Rebecca Quentin lowered her head and murmured, "You helped my father, and I stayed with you. It was a fair deal."

At this, Howard Geoffrey sneered. It seemed Alexander Quentin hadn’t told his daughter the truth. Well, no matter. She didn’t need to know the real deal.

Rebecca Quentin asked, displeased, "What are you laughing at?"

"Nothing. I was just thinking that your father didn’t live his life in vain; he never forgot to scheme, even up to his death."

Rebecca Quentin suppressed her anger. "My father just passed away. I hope you can be more respectful."

Howard Geoffrey maintained a leisurely smile and said lightly, "Alright, let’s get down to business."

Rebecca Quentin didn’t respond.

"It’s not too late. I’ll have the driver take you to the hospital."

Rebecca Quentin flinched at his words.

She knew that at this moment, the word "hospital" was very sensitive; it was the place where the fate of her unborn child would be decided.

But at this moment, she didn’t want to ask him for clarification. Some decisions, even if she didn’t want to make them, ultimately had to be faced.

Rebecca Quentin and Howard Geoffrey sat in the backseat. Throughout the journey, Rebecca Quentin kept her gaze fixed out the car window, seemingly wanting to avoid any further interaction with him.

Howard Geoffrey, meanwhile, leisurely flipped through a recent financial magazine, as if the matter at hand was of no great consequence to him.

They arrived at the hospital entrance in what felt like a blink of an eye. The driver, Roye, respectfully opened the car door for Rebecca Quentin.

Rebecca Quentin stepped out of the car, her gaze fixing on the bright red cross atop the hospital building.

Howard Geoffrey remained in the car, engrossed in his financial magazine, seemingly unconcerned, not even glancing up at Rebecca Quentin.

Roye said, "Ma’am, the doctor is ready. I’ll take you in."

So, he’d even arranged the surgeon...

Her heart clenched. Rebecca Quentin nodded. "Okay."

If they advertise these procedures on TV so readily, it probably doesn’t take very long.

Following Roye to an examination room at the end of the corridor, Rebecca Quentin sat down, feeling anxious.

Roye said, "Ma’am, please wait a moment. I’ll go get the doctor."

Rebecca Quentin nodded gently.

Roye left, and Rebecca Quentin was suddenly alone in the large examination room.

The hospital was unusually quiet at night. Rebecca Quentin glanced around casually, and her eyes were suddenly drawn to a picture of an adorable baby hanging on the white wall.

It was an adorable baby learning to crawl, with dark, sparkling eyes, delicate features, and an aura of new life...

Rebecca Quentin gazed at it, captivated. A soft, maternal light flickered in her eyes. But then, the thought of what was to come made her gaze dim, and a bloody image flashed through her mind...

The next second, Rebecca Quentin steeled herself, stood up, and walked out of the examination room without hesitation.

Outside the hospital entrance, the familiar Bugatti was parked beneath a canopy of trees adorned with string lights.

Rebecca Quentin took a deep breath. Determined not to show any weakness in front of him, she walked towards him.

Under the shade of the trees, Howard Geoffrey was on the phone.

Rebecca Quentin approached from behind and waited patiently.

Howard Geoffrey was on the phone, apparently with a client. He stood with one hand in his trouser pocket, talking and laughing.

Rebecca Quentin didn’t get any closer, just gazed at his tall, straight back.

She had to admit, her opinion of him had changed significantly over the past two years. The one constant, however, was her awe at his appearance. To this day, he remained the most handsome man she had ever seen. Even now, just his back in a casual suit radiated a unique nobility and pride.

A few minutes passed. He ended the call and turned, his eyes inadvertently meeting hers, which were fixed on him in a daze.

Their eyes met for a few seconds before Rebecca Quentin regained her composure. She blurted out awkwardly, "Uh, I have something to tell you... I saw you were on the phone, so I didn’t want to disturb you."

Noticing the nervousness in Rebecca Quentin’s eyes, Howard Geoffrey narrowed his. His tone softened. "Go ahead."

Rebecca Quentin lowered her gaze and said calmly, "Let’s discuss the divorce first, then we can talk about the baby."

A smile touched Howard Geoffrey’s lips, but he didn’t respond immediately.

When Howard Geoffrey didn’t answer, Rebecca Quentin looked up and blurted out anxiously, "Hey, did you hear what I said..."

"Divorce? Sweetheart, you must be mistaken. I never planned to divorce you."

"What?"

Howard Geoffrey maintained a faint smile. "We’ve been married for two years, and we’re both satisfied with each other, aren’t we? Why would we need to get a divorce?"

Since they were being frank, Rebecca Quentin dropped all pretense. "Howard," she said flatly, "marriage isn’t a game. I can’t play along with you for all my life."

Howard Geoffrey’s brow furrowed. "But don’t forget, when a ’life’ is involved in the game, pulling out isn’t so easy!"

"But getting rid of the child isn’t the only solution."

Howard Geoffrey looked displeased, his tone turning cold. "Who told you I wanted to get rid of this child?"

Rebecca Quentin turned her head away and said irritably, "You brought me to the hospital, didn’t you?"

"HA!" Howard Geoffrey suddenly laughed. He leisurely stretched out an arm and pulled Rebecca Quentin into his embrace. "Silly woman, I brought you to the hospital because I needed to confirm if I was really going to be a father, based on your and Aunt Clare’s claims."

Rebecca Quentin’s eyes widened. "You mean..."

"Of course, I intend to keep this child. A man should be established by thirty, and continuing the family line is a top priority."

"Are you serious?"

Howard Geoffrey kissed Rebecca Quentin’s fair cheek and said in a magnetic voice, "Darling, do I look like I’m joking?"

Pulling away slightly from Howard Geoffrey, Rebecca Quentin shook her head. "But your attitude when you first found out I was pregnant wasn’t like this."

Howard Geoffrey answered frankly, "Because I never associated you with being the mother of my child. But now that it has happened, I need to make a calm decision."

Howard Geoffrey was so direct. In Rebecca Quentin’s view, his words also matched reality...

What was she, Rebecca Quentin, really worth? In his eyes, was she anything more than a tool, someone he’d married to vent his desires on while mourning his late girlfriend? To put it bluntly, she was just there to satisfy his physical needs. How could she ever earn his respect? The kindness he’d shown her over the past two years... it was probably all because her face resembled that of his deceased girlfriend.
