Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Do I look like I’m joking with you?

"But..."

Rebecca Quentin wanted to say something more, but she was interrupted by Mr. Derek from Forestleap. "Miss Quentin, we understand your difficulties, but please also try to understand us small companies. When your father was alive, perhaps we wouldn’t have worried about this payment. However, now that you, an amateur, are in charge of Quentin, I really can’t be sure if Quentin will still be able to repay this debt under your leadership if we continue to delay."

Mr. Derek spoke very directly and truthfully.

Seeing their firm attitudes, Rebecca Quentin fell silent, knowing she could no longer persuade them.

The next second, Mr. Derek stubbed out his cigarette and stated bluntly, "Miss Quentin, if there’s nothing else, we’ll see you in court tomorrow."

Mr. Colin also flicked the ash from his clothes, stood up indifferently, and clearly had no intention of dealing with Rebecca Quentin any further.

Rebecca Quentin bit her lip gently, her heart filled with unbearable pain and helplessness.

However, at that very moment, an unfriendly, mocking voice suddenly came from outside the door. "Leaving already, gentlemen?"

The familiar voice made Rebecca Quentin look up abruptly. Yes, the speaker was Jason Wood, who usually accompanied Howard Geoffrey.

"Uh, Mr. Geoffrey..."

"Mr. Geoffrey..."

And just as she expected, Jason Wood’s boss, Howard Geoffrey, was looking at her from behind him.

Rebecca Quentin stared at him blankly for a moment.

There are people in this world who possess an innate coldness and dominance. They don’t need to deliberately maintain their image or speak much, yet they exude an insurmountable majesty. Howard Geoffrey was one such person.

While Howard Geoffrey walked towards Rebecca Quentin, ignoring everyone else, Jason Wood addressed the two departing men with feigned politeness. "Gentlemen, our boss just returned from a business trip. He learned that his wife had invited you both tonight. However, our boss wishes to spend some time with her now. If you don’t mind, I can discuss matters with you in the private room next door on her behalf."

After the others left, only Howard Geoffrey and Rebecca Quentin remained in the private room.

It had been many days since Rebecca Quentin last saw Howard Geoffrey. As her eyes met his deep, dark gaze, her heart sank, and an inexplicable bitterness welled up inside her.

As Howard Geoffrey approached, she stood up nervously.

His dark eyes stared deeply into hers.

Feeling his burning gaze, she remained silent, her hands tightly clenched, her downcast eyes concealing her current helplessness.

"Aunt Clare told me you’re pregnant," he said indifferently.

Rebecca Quentin, who hadn’t told anyone about her pregnancy, widened her eyes in shock. She looked at him, somewhat at a loss.

After a long pause, she slowly replied, "Yes, I am pregnant."

Howard Geoffrey’s eyes suddenly darkened, his gaze fixing on her like a hawk.

Encountering such a sharp gaze from him for the first time in two years, Rebecca Quentin turned her back to him and explained, "It was an accident."

Howard Geoffrey narrowed his eyes. "An accident?"

Sensing the doubt in his voice, Rebecca Quentin met his dark eyes, her own clear of guilt. "Don’t you believe me?"

"I thought everyone in the Geoffrey household knew you weren’t close to me. I also knew you were consistently using contraception, and I cooperated with that, didn’t I?" His so-called cooperation naturally referred to using protection during her fertile period.

The coldness in Howard Geoffrey’s tone was a stark contrast to the gentle demeanor he had shown for the past two years.

Unable to adapt to this new dynamic between them, Rebecca Quentin shuddered slightly as an indescribable pain struck her heart. She endured the feeling and retorted, "Are you blaming me now? If you can’t control your own urges, you have no right to question me."

Howard Geoffrey’s deep eyes narrowed further as he seemed to size her up. "I never knew you were so sharp-tongued."

Rebecca Quentin mustered her courage, met his cold gaze, and retorted angrily, "And I never knew your true personality was so detestable."

At that moment, they both knew the two-year charade had finally reached its breaking point, the time to lay their cards on the table. She just hadn’t expected his true self to be so overbearing.

Howard Geoffrey didn’t seem angered. Instead, a smirk played on his lips. "Really? Did you actually believe my kindness was genuine?"

His words stunned Rebecca Quentin for a second, a sharp pang of pain piercing her heart. Slowly turning her head away, she said calmly, "You’re mistaken. I never took it seriously."
