Chapter 21: Father Qu’s Death

Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Father Qu’s Death

Quentin Villa.

In the living room, "Mr. Geoffrey, Miss, it’s great that you can come back. I believe the master will feel better when he sees you!" the housekeeper Aunt Clare said enthusiastically.

Seeing Aunt Clare’s joyful look, Rebecca Quentin blamed herself, "It’s all my fault. If I had come back to visit Daddy more often, maybe he wouldn’t have gotten so sick."

Indeed, over the past two years, Rebecca hadn’t visited her father, Alexander Quentin, very often. This wasn’t because she had forgotten about her loving father after getting married. Instead, every time she saw Alexander, she was reminded of the real reason behind her marriage. As time went on, she began to avoid her father. She only started to regret this six months ago, when she was told he was seriously ill...

Aunt Clare comforted her, "Life and death, sickness and old age, are the natural course of life. Don’t feel bad, Miss. The master is eager to see you both. Let me take you upstairs!"

Rebecca nodded, "Okay."

In the master bedroom, Alexander Quentin lay weakly on the sickbed with an IV drip.

"Daddy..."

Seeing her once handsome and healthy father now reduced to skin and bones, Rebecca’s tears instantly fell. She held her father tightly, her heart full of self-blame.

"Becca, you’re back..." Alexander gently touched his daughter’s face, his old and frail face also stained with tears.

Howard Geoffrey stood silently behind Rebecca, not saying a word.

After the father and daughter chatted for a while, Alexander noticed the figure standing in the room and gently supported Rebecca, saying, "Becca, don’t cry... Daddy has something to discuss with Howard alone. You wait for us downstairs, and I’ll join you for lunch."

Rebecca wiped her tears childishly and nodded, "Okay."

After she left the room, the atmosphere inside seemed to freeze in an instant.

Propping himself up, Alexander looked weakly at Howard with listless eyes, his voice trembling, "I know you won’t let this go easily..."

Looking at the dying old man before him, Howard indifferently sat on a chair, tilting his head to light a cigarette. The deep blue flame of the lighter reflected on his handsome but ghost-like chilly face. After exhaling a puff of clear smoke, he spoke calmly, "You should have known when you crossed me." In his world, no one could threaten him.

Gasping due to his illness, Alexander coughed twice, only to struggle through the pain and say, "Rebecca is innocent... Mr. Geoffrey, I beg you, for the sake of your two-year marriage, please don’t blame her. She is just a pure-hearted girl... If you want revenge, aim it at me!"

Flicking the ashes from his cigarette, Howard smirked wickedly with a hint of mockery, "Really? She’s still a girl? Mr. Quentin, you might have forgotten that she’s my ’wife.’ When she pleases me in bed, she’s nothing like a girl... I’ve always wondered, how could you let your daughter be like a prostitute to satisfy me? Your way of loving her is indeed special!"

Each word from Howard was laced with humiliation towards Rebecca. Alexander choked, nearly suffocating from continuous coughing.

Howard sneered coldly, standing up and saying icily, "I apologize, ’father-in-law,’ I need to go out and comfort your precious daughter. After all, our acting has to be believable!"

After lunch at the Quentin’s, Howard headed back to the company to deal with work matters, so Rebecca chose to stay.

At this moment, Rebecca sat by her father’s bed, tenderly keeping him company and chatting.

Seeing her father’s body withered by illness, she said with concern, "Daddy, I want to stay home and keep you company for a few days."

With his daughter by his side, Alexander’s illness seemed to ease a bit, and he said with energy, "No need. Howard’s just back from a business trip. You should spend more time with him to maintain a good relationship between husband and wife."

At the mention of Howard, Rebecca lowered her eyes, not saying a word.

"Becca..."

Knowing her father was about to repeat himself, Rebecca hurriedly said, "Uh, I know. Our relationship is great."

For the past two years, each time she saw her father, he always inquired about the progress of her relationship with Howard.

Although she had known from the beginning that her marriage to Howard wouldn’t last, she always presented a positive outlook to avoid worrying her father. This was particularly because he had always hoped she and Howard would make their marriage work.
