Conquering His Cold Heart
Chapter 438 - 438: Late-Night Talk

"Anna?" Caspian abruptly stopped when he saw Anastasia's silhouette in the corner of the antechamber. "You're still awake?" he asked, surprised that Anastasia hadn't yet gone to sleep even though it was very late already.

Anastasia stepped in front of the window. The cool moonlight framed her body and created the illusion that it was Anastasia who was glowing.

"Yes." She looked at her husband and said in a very soft voice, "I was waiting for you to come."

Caspian sighed because he didn't mean to be late and keep his wife waiting for him. It was just that it took him quite a long time to put a rein over his anger.

"I apologize for being late." He held out his arm towards his wife and asked, "Shall we head towards the bedchamber then? You must be tired."

"I'm not that tired," Anastasia lied.

She was extremely exhausted and was barely able to stand on her feet.

However, the things that happened back in the Warmane Mansion kept on haunting her. Her mind was full of several things for her to fall asleep with ease.

And instead of walking over to Caspian and taking his hand, she sat down on the cold sofa. She gazed out through the glass window at the half-moon that was clearly visible from the spot she was sitting in.

Then she asked with a calm voice, "Caspian, why don't you come and sit by my side? I wish to have a chat with you."

Caspian was slightly taken aback by such a request from Anastasia. Ever since the winter season began, she couldn't wait to snuggle inside the thick blankets. So, this request came as a slight surprise to him.

"Are you sure that you want to sit there? Can't we talk while lying on the bed?" he asked, worried that his wife would freeze.

Anastasia was indifferent about the cold at the moment. The coldness that was spreading inside her chest was making her feel numb toward the cold that her body was feeling on the outside.

"Mhmm…" She kept on staring at the moon as she invited Caspian once more. "It is fine. Come and take a seat."

Caspian was still unsure about it even though Anastasia said that it was fine. He didn't like the thought of his wife's lips and palms turning blue and purple with cold.

Thus, he went to the bedchamber and came back to the antechamber in a flash while holding a thick blanket in his hands.

He placed it on Anastasia's lap and then made sure to cover her well before sitting down beside her.

"So?" Caspian also followed Anastasia's gaze and asked while looking at the imperfections on the moon's surface, "What did you want to talk about? Is it something that requires this late-night talk?"

"Yes," came an instant reply.

Caspian heard his wife breathing shakily. And right after, he heard a ragged whisper, "It's better this way. At least I won't get intimidated by you if I can't see your face."

"Er… What?" Caspian furrowed his brows and looked at his wife's face in utter confusion. "Intimidated by me? What are you even talking about?"

He waited for a moment for his wife to clarify the reason behind her words. However, all he got was silence in response.

The frown lines on his forehead got deeper as he watched Anastasia's eye rims slowly getting filled with tears.

"Hey! Anna?" Caspian looked at her with eyes full of confusion. "What's uh… What's wrong?"

He couldn't understand why Anastasia was acting like this all of a sudden.

'Did I do something wrong?' He recalled back to the incident that happened at dusk and wondered, 'Did she indeed watch me pulverize the skull of that last man? Is that what she wants to talk about?'

Caspian had promised to be better for the sake of his wife. However, in order to protect her, he had to resort to extreme violence. He didn't regret any of it.

If his action from earlier was what was bothering her at this late hour then he was ready with an excuse. He was ready to answer Anastasia that he did what he did for her sake only.

But unlike what he was thinking, Anastasia began by saying, "Caspian, there's something that I need to tell you."

"Yes, of course." Caspian took Anastasia's hand in his and said in a gentle voice, "You can tell me anything. What is it?"

"I umm…" Anastasia gulped because she was feeling soreness in her throat. And the cold weather was making her nose as well as the back of her throat to dry completely.

Caspian adjusted himself to fully face Anastasia. He attentively looked at her grim facial expression and asked while listening to her accelerating heartbeat, "Yes? Go on."

Anastasia tried speaking again. "I had been wanting to say this to you for quite a while now."

Suddenly, she felt something warm running down her eyes and down to her cold cheeks. She scoffed in embarrassment and clenched her teeth in anger.

She aggressively wiped her tears and mumbled to herself, "These stupid tears! Why can't they just stay inside my eyes for a while? I am trying to talk, you stupid tears!"

Caspian was once again taken aback when Anastasia began talking to herself like that. And from what she said and acted until now, he wondered if she did something wrong or if she was about to ask something impossible of him.

"Talk to me freely," he said as he gently rubbed his thumb on her knuckles. "You know you don't have to be afraid of me, right?"

She kept on looking at the moon as if she was trying to contain the tears inside the rims of her eyes. She gulped dryly and then said in a shaking whisper, "You wouldn't have said that if you knew what I was hiding from you."

Caspian was more offended by the fact that his wife was afraid to confide in him than by the fact that she had just confessed to hiding something from him.

"Don't tell me that after all this time, I still scare you, Anna. Come on. Tell me, what is it?"

After all, he didn't even imagine in his dreams that what his wife was hiding from him was about to turn his world upside down.

"I am suffering from an incurable disease, Caspian. I am going to die soon."
