Conquering His Cold Heart -
Chapter 423 - 423: New Discoveries
Before taking a chance to lick the water, Everard first took a deep whiff.
'Er… it doesn't smell like anything…' he thought in his head. Still, that didn't demotivate him from pursuing his initial intention.
Everard was seriously thinking of licking the water just because it looked unbelievably magical. Due to the reflection from the halo, not just the chalice but even the water in it was sparkling brightly as though the silver rays of the moon had accumulated in that container.
Right when the black wolf was about to take a chance to dip his tongue in the chalice though, a splash of water hit him right in his eyes.
'Ow! Ow!' he exclaimed in his head because that magical water was causing an itching sensation in his eyes.
He was thinking that the pain was just a momentary thing but soon, it started to get even worse.
The black wolf closed his eyes tightly and began to jump around while whimpering. The pain that he was feeling in his eyes gradually shifted to the back of his head and eventually crept down his whole body through his veins and bones.
The pain, however, wasn't as excruciating as the transformation. It was bearable. Even then, Everard was lightly jumping around on his paws as if he was a little pup.
And while jumping, he accidentally bumped onto someone else.
"Owooo… Owoo… Owoo…"
Everard quickly opened one of his eyes to peek at who it was because although he had bumped lightly, he heard a loud thud followed by a fearful whimpering noise.
"Er… Are you okay? Can you get up?" he asked while bearing the frustrating stinging sensation that he was feeling all over his body.
It was one of his Royal Guards who was there to protect him.
It didn't seem like Everard needed protection while he was in his wolf form though. He was far stronger than his well-trained bodyguards.
Not that Everard himself was untrained in the arts of battle. It was just that he only received those training as a human, unlike his guards who had mastered the arts of battle and war as both humans and werewolves.
Upon hearing the Alpha's voice ringing in his head, that guard's eyes almost popped out of his eye socket. As it was something new, he was also stunned to his core, similar to how Jerome was dumbfounded earlier.
But unlike Jerome, the guard thought that he was hearing things and began to freak out in his head. "Oh, dear Goddess! What is happening to me? I think I am going mad!" It sounded as though he was on the verge of crying.
Everard heard that guard's voice in his head and also heard the pathetic crying noises that he was making.
The guard had unknowingly directed his thought to the Alpha.
Everard was now convinced that what his Beta had said about the use of wolf language to converse until now was indeed true.
The black wolf let out a low growl. And when he caught the attention of the whimpering wolf before him, he directed his thoughts to that wolf, "Calm down! You aren't going mad."
Yet again, that guard had a shocked look in his yellow eyes.
The itching sensation that Everard was feeling in his eyes started to get even more intense now.
Thus, he quickly finished his little chat with the guard and said, "Better start getting used to this since this is how I will be communicating with everyone while we are in our wolf form."
"Y-Yes alpha…" the guard replied while lowering his head.
However, he couldn't keep his gaze away from the Alpha's eyes. He was noticing how the flaming yellow glow in the Alpha's eyes was slowly changing its color.
Everard's eyes now looked even fiercer than before, as if a volcano had just erupted in his eyes and red hot lava was circling around his irises.
One had to admit that Everard was finally giving off the dangerous and intense aura, the aura of the powerful Alpha.
The guard was startled out of his dazed state when the Beta suddenly stood in front of him.
Jerome looked at Everard and finally asked, "Are you feeling well? Did the pain stop?" His voice sounded somewhat labored because not just Everard, but Jerome was also going through much worse pain.
Everard looked into Jerome's eyes which looked like a pair of blue stars in the dark sky. And he exclaimed in surprise, "Whoa! Your eyes look… different."
Jerome nodded his head and replied, "It's the color of the Beta's eyes. And you yourself got a brand new color of eyes." He paused for a second as though he was stamping the image of the huge black wolf with red eyes in his mind and then said in a proud tone, "They suit you."
"I've got red eyes?" Everard mistakenly thought that the whites of his eyes had turned red and mumbled, "I wonder if it's because I licked that sparkling water earlier. My eyes were itching really badly."
Jerome laughed and then corrected Everard. "No. That pain was the sign that the Goddess was bestowing her blessings on the two of us. I felt that pain too. But the pain is very much worth it since we get a boost in our strengths."
"Ah!" Everard nodded in understanding. He more or less understood why the guard from earlier fell down so hard when he thought they only bumped at each other very lightly.
Jerome was still mentally praising the overpowering aura that Everard was emitting right now. And he unintentionally directed his thoughts to Everard, "If there ever is a battle, then no one will even dare to go near him. He looks like he could kill the enemies just with his fearsome aura."
"Eh? Who?" Everard asked and looked around them.
Jerome realized what he just did and chuckled to avoid answering the question. He then pointed his snout at the chalice that had finally stopped shining and asked Everard, "Why don't you check your eyes in the reflection? They look wonderful."
Everard trotted his paws towards the foot of the statue again and then leaned to get a closer look at his eyes in the reflection on the water. "Ooh! They look beautiful!" He praised his own appearance and began to check the sides of his face and ears too.
Jerome stood beside Everard and jokingly said, "This is how you know whom to go after if there ever is a battle among the clans. Check the eye color, and make the alpha and beta surrender."
"Mhmm…" Everard nodded, slightly nervous if a battle between the clans was a normal thing. "I will keep that in mind," he said in a rather serious tone.
Jerome noticed the seriousness in Everard's voice and wanted to calm him down by saying that he was simply trying to be sarcastic.
However, before he could do that, they heard someone banging loudly against the door of the hall. The bang was simultaneously followed by a howl so loud that it sounded utterly gut-wrenching.
"Who the hell is that?" The Alpha asked his Beta after suddenly getting startled by that howl.
Everyone who was on and around the altar watched that light-grey wolf cautiously treading forward.
For some unexplained reason, that wolf found itself heading toward the Alpha. He wanted to stop himself from walking because he thought that the others were giving him a scrutinizing glare. But his body didn't follow his mind's command.
Jerome held his head high and answered, "He's a new wolf who just had his first transformation. You know how it goes from your own experience. You get pulled towards your alpha. The same thing is happening to him."
Everard looked at that wolf again. A part of him was happy to see a new member while another part of him felt pity toward that poor little boy.
'He must be feeling confused and disoriented,' Everard thought to himself and decided to calm the new wolf.
He directed his thoughts towards that wolf and spoke to him in a warm voice, "You don't have to be scared. We aren't your enemy. Come along now."
The light-grey wolf was frightened when someone else's voice echoed in his head. He immediately lowered his head in a submissive manner and began to whimper.
One of the elder wolves who was standing behind Everard began to howl at the new wolf, asking him to not behave like a wuss and greet the alpha.
Somehow, Everard also understood what that elder said. And he turned his head to face that elder, but spoke to him using the telepathy rather than howling back at him, "Elder Amos, please let me do the talking."
Everard then disregarded the surprised look on that elder wolf's face and faced the new wolf again.
Then he resumed talking in a warm voice as earlier, "I know that you just went through the most painful nights of your life. Right now, you must be feeling lost. You must have a lot of questions or complaints for us. But fear not, for we are here for you."
His kind words made the new wolf feel a lot calmer than before. And since he wasn't kept in the dark like Everard, he was quick to recognize that the black wolf who was talking to him was his Alpha.
Thus, he bent his forelegs and then lowered his head while facing the Alpha. And he said in a soft, trembling voice, "Greetings, Alpha. M-My name is Thomas Bell. I will be in your care from today onwards."
Everard was happy that the boy was aware of his situation. And he gladly said, "Welcome to the Crestfire clan, brother."
