Chapter 78 - Interrogation? Intimidation!

Chapter 78: Chapter 78 - Interrogation? Intimidation!

For probably the thousandth time, big and small, I cursed Helene’s ignorance. What good was knowing such things like scent blockers existed if she had no idea how much they cost or where to get them?

Not that it would do me good now, with my pursuer already locked onto my trail. But if I’d acquired them beforehand...

> Stupid stupid stupid! Why didn’t you just ask at the clinic and see if that was an option for wolves in my situation? <

I made a mental note to investigate them further if I managed to shake this ’tail’. Sooner than waiting for that next check up!

Hoping to lose them in the maze of back streets, I ducked into an alley I’d been in before. But the more I moved, the more I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being herded somewhere.

> What if I could use my pursuer’s persistent tactics against them? Would you be with me for it, Vrika? <

I scanned my surroundings even as I felt the reluctant, rumbling whine. Looking for a spot where I could ’turn the tables’.

A narrow gap between two buildings, barely wide enough for a larger person to squeeze through, catches my gaze. If I could lure my stalker in there...

I made a show of looking frantically over my shoulder, then darted into the gap as if in a panic. Dropping my grocery bags at the entrance so they were in the way, just a bit...

My hand rushed to pull the knife I’d stuck by its lonesome into a certain zippered pocket of the backpack. A precaution I’d taken during my first night on the streets, wanting it to be separate and easily retrievable.

"Should have taken a silver one instead..."

I didn’t relish the thought of using it. In the first place, I barely knew enough not to hurt myself while just gripping the handle.

But I would do whatever it took to protect us... me, Vrika, and this unborn child. Including shift and fight claw and fang - out in the open if I’m forced to.

> I’m with you too, we can handle this. <

After reassuring my wolf, I pressed my back against a lucky crevice in the wall. Just enough space so that I can’t be entirely seen.

Waiting with anxious breaths... and halfway to my hybrid musculature underneath the skin of a human - when I heard the footsteps. When the shadow of a figure began to squeeze sideways between walls of brick.

I pounced - and the hunter’s gleaming knifepoint was at their throat in a slamming heartbeat. My forearm pinned them against the wall as my own back quickly struck the opposite side for leverage.

"Why are you following me?"

The question was growled throatily, my face only inches from theirs. Yet to my surprise and annoyance... mycaptive only let out a low chuckle.

While a hunter might have a hard time stabbing a wolf with regular steel... I am currently a fair bit stronger than a mere human. But he doesn’t seem scared at all?

"Easy there, little firecracker. I’m not here to hurt you. Just doing my job."

I pressed the tip harder against his vulnerable throat, not buying his ’calm down’ act for a second. No one is so persistent for so long without wanting something I didn’t want to give in the first place.

"And what job would that be? Stalking lone women on the streets? Why?"

The man’s eyes finally had a flash of fear cross them when I poked and twisted the handle to... emphasize my questions. Then it was rapidly replaced by a sly grin.

> Like a man suddenly let in on the joke. Is he insane? <

"Oh, you’re not just any lone woman though, are you? Word is that you’re a welcomed newcomer in our fine city here. A pretty interesting one at that."

My features remained an intentional mask of indifference. For all his words, he hasn’t given away much and neither should I.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m just trying to get by without being hassled. Same as anyone else."

The werewolf’s grin widened with eyes glinting with a malicious humor. Like the joke I’m not aware I’m telling just gained something further.

"Is that so? Getting by. Well, my boss has taken a special interest in you. I’ve got orders to make sure you’re not causing any trouble, you know?"

A frown starts to form as a growing sense of unease fills me. | Mother’s Intuition | has been buzzing at me nonstop that this man is... well, not a good man.

> Which means his boss is either worse or not much better. <

"Who are you talking about? Who sent you?"

He leaned forward, stretching his neck onto the knife like it wasn’t capable of doing anything - despite drawing a little blood already and despite it poking in a little more.

His disgusting, rancid smelling meat breath spews hotly on my face. Like all the worst cuts of bacon had sat in the sun for days.

But I barely wrinkle my nose. I can always vomit again later when I’m not trying to pretend to be a ’badass’.

"Why, I work for the local Alpha, of course. The one who runs this whole damn city."

I squint my eyes at this information, almost viscerally feeling it is a lie. Which is when... like proof or like denial, a sudden shift in the winds brought a familiar scent to my nose.

Clean snow, slight iron. My eyes widened when my wolf stirred at her presence - and the grip on the knife faltered for only a split second.

But in that one moment, the male made his move.

He slapped my arm hard while shoving my side with his other hand. Sending me stumbling back into the alley and the threat of steel I wielded pinging off concrete.

No more than an inch of claws or fur grew on him before white slammed his back into the wall with a sickening crunch. The kind that bone makes when it meets between two things that will not give.

I stared in shock as Kyrie Voss stood there with white furred & clawed hand pressed to his chest. Only partially shifted somehow - like her arm alone had been the thing allowed to change.

> A skill I didn’t think anyone else here knew. With eyes blazing with an orange fury I’ve never seen in... anyone before. <

My spirit and I watched from the side, transfixed, as claws dug up his clothing and into his throat. As she lifted the ’man’ she pinned up the wall, with the single arm.

She snarled at him while her skin rippled from the muscles underneath stretching and receding, over and over. Holding back a total shift like she was the authority on her own primal nature... despite its attempts at disobedience.

"You dare to lay a hand on her? You dare to threaten what’s mine and claim... I ordered it?"

Her voice was low and deadly. Filled with power and command.

The same wrath I can see held back, through the thin gauze of civility, made the man whimper like a whipped dog. His bravado used with me evaporated completely in the face of an Alpha’s rage.

> I... I definitely get it. But that’s also a little annoying... to be taken less seriously... <

"I’m sorry, I didn’t know! I was just following the orders!"

Kyrie’s nose pinched up at the smell of his breath and her lip curled in disgust. Her grip twitched tighter, judging by the bulge in the whites of his eyes.

"If I ever. Catch your scent. Near her again. I will personally track you down and rip your throat out. That will be my mercy."
