Chapter 36: Chapter 36 - Covered Hourglasses & Completed Sudden Tasks-es
I stepped into a private room this time to change when she returned with the set. The fit of both pieces were surprisingly comfortable.
Supporting without constricting... even with the rather generous proportions this body possessed compared to others I’ve seen.
The bra design was quite a marvel. That meticulous spider functioning as our tailor would probably do a better job of it - but not by much.
"How does it feel?"
Anise questioned from the other side of the door when I took a while posing at myself in the provided mirror. I replied with usual royal arrogance.
"Acceptable."
Privately, I had to admit it was better than that. After days spent in nothing... this felt like an important step toward fitting into ’civilization’.
When I open the door to show off, her hand immediately covers a laugh. She points to the robe I left on the floor.
> Right, cameras. Why didn’t you warn me? <
Heh... I’m not sure what a scathing observation should truly look like from a wolf spirit, but... that was it. Vrika is unwilling to take the blame!
"It looked excellent on you, for what it’s worth. Shall we move on to selecting the rest of your outfit now?"
Anise takes me to another section of the store and I start to wonder why exactly it’s so empty here. The place is certain to be expensive, attached to a luxury such as a spa.
But there were enough clients from the city in attendance, within the sections of this establishment that I passed through today... that I would expect one or two could be shopping even now.
"You know, you have a near classic hourglass. Many women would envy your figure."
"I’m aware."
"I imagine you are."
My response seemed to amuse her further. I have a feeling that she is coming to see me as a rich, sheltered, and possibly ’air headed’ young woman.
Curious. The first two of those things were true in my old world, to a degree.
The last two could be considered true of Helene. Yet now?
All three terms do not really fit me.
"I know what Tess usually tells people, but lots of skin is best for the spring and summer months. With autumn well underway and temperatures dropping, I would recommend layering pieces."
"I have a jacket for the cold."
"Is it with you? I can try and coordinate the colors."
I considered that offer for a moment, then walked back to my backpack and pulled it out just to see how she would react. The item was utilitarian and clearly not for high fashion.
The woman’s expression remained mostly blank, but the slight tightening around her eyes told me she was not a fan when I handed it over.
"I see. We can certainly work with this."
She set the obviously offensive item aside like it might assault her if she was not careful with it. Amusing.
"Now, do you have any color preferences or fabrics you particularly enjoy or avoid?"
"Vibrant reds or sapphire blues are what I like, but the whole garment need not be these colors. Silk would be my strongest preference, but for now I think that things that are easier to have cleaned are in order."
Pale blue eyes looked almost pointedly back at the plain coat that fit none of those qualities. Anise cleared her throat and gestured toward a selection of clothing nearby.
"I think I have several options that would suit you perfectly."
I followed her to the racks that had that skirt I noticed when I entered. A small longing to have been in it when I entered the city struck me.
To have made a better impression as I walked through the streets. If I’d been more put together when I met-
> Don’t even. <
My wolf’s tail wagged only once before it turned away. I sigh in the space before returning to the physical moment.
Watching the consultant grab item after item, I know that today could only have happened this way. Meeting that Alpha in the way that I did, looking as I did.
What need would she have to take pity and give me this card if I was dressed in finery like I had money?
To distract myself from these thoughts, my focus finally turns to the system check mark.
The task list that has been trying to get my attention for some time.
TASK: Find the Mole in the Spa
TASK COMPLETION ✓
REWARD IMMINENT ⚝
Swirl after misty swirl of text passes by, leaving my face twitching in consternation.
> So I guess it can tell me to do things that I don’t pay attention to, yet reward me anyway when I do them without knowing? I don’t like the idea of that... <
Sure, it means that my own actions were completely unmotivated by what it seems to have wanted me to do. However, it still feels like I am doing its bidding.
Or that it is tricking me into thinking I am. Useful as the map and clock is, I kind of hate this system.
"Okay, so we have-"
"Please, hold on just a second."
I interrupt the woman and close my eyes to focus. The lump of blue had already begun unraveling into more text.
Survivor’s Wisdom
My fox form stares at the new text for a while, waiting for a tingle or buzz or something like the other system assisted ’ability’. | Mother’s Intuition | had showed that sort of result right away, but this one-
"Are you alright, Miss...?"
I inhaled and sigh. Why should it make sense right away and be useful?
Being spoiled and expectant of people and now systems. Act your age, Citra.
"Fine, thank you. I just had a moment of uncomfortability caused by... hunger."
The first thing I can think of falls from my lips, but it works surprisingly well.
"That makes sense, you checked in hours and hours ago if you were doing the Deluxe package. Would you like to order something through the spa? Maybe takeout?"
Her hand had already pulled a rose-colored smartphone from a hidden dress pocket and shook it as she offered. I weighed the sudden desire to eat against finishing our current task.
> Finishing tasks... that’s what put me into the position to be questioned about this in the first place! <
Vrika did not share my ire. In fact, it still seems to be ignoring me again - likely because I keep refusing to think deeply about its precious fated mate.
The hells know that it could at least let a woman sleep on such new information.
A nap in a strange room where I dreamed of my grandmother does not count as time to step back and process things...
