Chapter 160: Chapter 160 - We Have To Stop Meeting In Alleys Like This
One of the smaller vials of wolfsbane from the hunter’s hideout I’d chosen to keep tucked in my backpack on the travel back to the city. Vrika had gotten used to ignoring my choice back then, but growled in frenzy when I pulled it out from the black clutch.
> It’s fine. I’m not splashing it on us. Hopefully. <
I’d emptied the bag of most of the money I was carrying and stored it in a hiding spot within the apartment. But fortunately... I didn’t expect leaving one of my few anti-werewolf weapons behind would have done me much good.
"This is one of those times I dislike being right."
Keeping it shoved in my handbag like any woman would keep lipstick would now provide me... options. The liquid sloshed as my hand clutched the vial - and I imagined I could already feel the hostile energy radiating from it through the glass.
Except it’s not *really* magic, just strange biology. Acting like a substance we are highly allergic to but in a way that causes immense pain like a potent ’neurotoxin’. At least, that’s what the hunter’s forum said about it.
Footsteps echoed closer and I tried to calm my wandering thoughts. Tried to convince myself that I could act tough. Guardian’s Composure helped, but I’m not sure it will be enough.
The biggest of the rogues, which probably makes him their leader emerged from the alley mouth. His outfit was nothing special and he could easily pass for any ungroomed human out on the street if he didn’t smell like sour grapes.
> I’m pretty sure that’s just his pheromones and not old wine. But I could be wrong. <
Flanking the sole entrance behind him were two smaller companions. All three of them were breathing hard but grinning with the satisfaction of a successful hunt. Strange, I don’t feel winded at all...
But I guess they were moving around as entirely human and I only looked like it. The big one advanced slowly while pointing at me with a slovenly sneer.
"Now, you can make this easy or hard. But either way, you’re coming with us."
"Damn, look at her. She’s already making things hard for me."
After an obscene grabbing gesture, the weakest looking one turned to the quieter seeming one with that same arm raised out.
"Gross, bro. I’m not fist bumping that hand after where you just touched yourself."
I backed against the brick wall, vial clutched and hidden in my sweating palm. I’d prefer it if they all moved a little closer together... but if I have to just make an example of the big one, that could work too.
"I don’t think I want to go anywhere with any of you. But I’d be quite happy if all of you left."
"You don’t have a choice. Did it sound like she did? I’m pretty sure what I just said didn’t sound like that, right?"
The weaker seeming one shook his head quickly and their mouthpiece turned back my way. Close enough now that I could see the cruel sort of anticipation in his eyes.
"See, we’ve been told to make sure you get back to your old pack. Didn’t say how long we can take with getting you there. Even asked, you know? Helluva guy - he just shrugged at us and said ’alive’ is all that matters."
I’m not sure what is worse. The opportunistic trash they are- or the one who hire them knowing it. Vrika knows we can’t exactly fight, but the spirit begins begging me to at least let it try.
> Maybe I’ll test the claws on them after they are writhing in pain from- <
"Step away from her. Now."
The voice cut through all of our spines like a blade, slicing deadly quiet - and absolutely furious. Kyrie stepped into the alley from behind them. Claws too long to be human and two pairs of orange candlelight swaying with every step.
Recognizing wrath when they saw it - an Alpha’s fury, the two smaller males immediately began backing up to the wall... as far away from me as they could get. But their taller and bulkier looking leader was still overconfident from the hunt.
> Wow. He actually stepped forward. Do we clap or pray for his soul... <
"This doesn’t concern you. We’re just collecting property for our employers."
"Everything. In my territory. Concerns me. And you? Just threatened. What’s mine."
Her voice dropped to a dangerous, disjointed growl that made lots of things other than my spine tingle. My grip around the vial becomes a little too firm over the words should have annoyed me.
They should have triggered my usual resistance to being claimed. Instead, they sent such heat racing through me all because of Victoria’s warnings. Too much of me wanted it to be true in spite of what I believe.
> Damn it to all nineteen hells, but when she is there in front of me... especially like this? I just think it would be fine to be whatever she wants, for however long she wants... <
What happened while my thoughts strayed was almost too fast to follow. One moment, the big one lunged toward me... probably thinking he could grab me as a hostage. The next he was flat on his stomach.
With Kyrie’s clawed hand around the back of his neck and her knee driven into his shoulder blades. This time, she didn’t give the rogue after me any suggestion to run and leave the city. This time, her claws tightened with his scream as his eyes held genuine terror.
"This is the second group. Targeting her under orders. I think it’s time I made it clear. What happens to wolves who hunt in my territory without my blessing."
Snarling at first, her voice grew into that deadly seeming finality that expressed how leniency was off the table. Leaving me looking at a very angry and very protective potential mate whose eyes were blazing up at me.
"Are you hurt?"
"I’m... fine."
Kyrie leaned down as her attention returned to the big werewolf she’d proved dominance against. Her arm never lost its iron hold as she pressed down her... example.
The other two looked like they would prefer to sneak past all of this and make a run for it. But they’d also just been shown how quickly the woman could move.
"You. You’re going to stay right here on the ground for a little while. Or I promise you’ll stay right there forever. Understand?"
She released her grip and the rogue made no moves at all - that chilling promise in her voice was crystal clear. As clear as the exact moment her Alpha behavior cracked under the weight of her fear.
"What the hell were you thinking, following them? You could have been killed!"
There it was. Sharp, frustrated proof that I’d been followed - not just luckily found for the half dozenth time. The sort of possessive, stalking behavior from the woman that has both thrilled and irritated me.
> No good, no good. At this rate I’m going to do foolish things. <
"I can take care of myself. I had a plan..."
"What plan, get yourself kidnapped? How would you have handled it then?"
The questions stung with the implication that I was helpless. It wasn’t entirely wrong, yet being snapped at charged me with a sort of tension. Unspoken emotions roiled in my heart as my mouth opened.
"Don’t move. I mean it, Kyrie."
I said quietly and the woman just... stopped. Froze as confusion replaced all her anger. And suddenly... I had all the power in this little confrontation between us. A sort of power over her that I’d always had.
> Don’t whine at me like that. I’m only using it for her own good. She needs to learn to back away from me. That it won’t end well for either of us. <
My wolf did not agree at all, but it couldn’t stop my decision.
"If you move. If you follow me as I walk away. If you try to protect me one more time without even asking... I’ll leave Vossden tonight. Permanently."
She realized instantly that I meant it. The way her whole body went even more still than before hurt my heart again. It’s really taking a beating today.
I forced myself to take a step closer to her. Standing only feet from the werewolf on the ground. And of course, what is measured in inches between us turned into even smaller fractions.
> Close enough that she could probably hear my heart hammering against my ribs, Vrika. Isn’t this what you’ve wanted all this time? <
"I guess... we’ll never know now, will we? How I might have dealt with things."
My lips actually brushed against her jawline as I whispered the words, jolting a feeling right into my lower back. We were so close I could feel the heat radiating from her skin. Smell the overwhelming scent of pure snow.
> Close enough to kiss her properly. If I’d wanted to do that right now. <
Which I do... more than I expected. But instead, I stepped back and walked out of the dead end. Leaving her standing frozen in that courtyard with three males wolves like a statue now holding onto a vial of wolfsbane.
The real point I had aimed to make, before the vixen in me decided that all the rest of that would be more fun - with an Alpha being so very obedient.
