Chapter 110: Chapter 110 - Weather Or Not, I’m Heading Out
As the clerk rang up my purchases, I found myself wondering what Kyrie would think of this practical but underhanded side of me. Then immediately questioned why her opinion mattered at all.
> It doesn’t. But... as a businesswoman, she’d probably approve of preparation rather than impulse. I was just thinking of how people act in this world. That’s all. <
Vrika’s smug panting grin told me exactly what the wolf thought of that rationalization.
"The weather’s supposed to turn late tonight. Hope you’re not planning to head out right away."
This was news to me. Then again, my system map doesn’t really have a weather forecasting ability - just an apocalypse prophecy. Maybe it would be a good idea to find an ’app’ on my phone.
"I hadn’t heard that. How bad?"
"Might be severe, local stations are split on how much - at least some rain moving in well after midnight. Supposed to last through early tomorrow morning."
The new man - also just a bit confusingly named [Mike] - handled my items with care. Even double bagging the heaviest things before tucking the receipt inside. I really should have been keeping all of these.
"Those trails get slick fast when it rains. Sidewalks in the city do too. Be careful out there."
I thanked this bare-faced version of male working retail for the warning, appreciating the practical information even as I wondered at the human tendency to offer unsolicited advice to complete strangers.
Once outside, I paused to adjust my grip on the shopping bags. The tools were lighter than they appeared, but the whole bag of ’outdoor’ goods was awkward to carry alongside my clutch purse.
I’d need to return to the motel to prepare for tonight’s exchange anyway. The other $300 is back there and I’d want to get out of this slightly conspicuous dress before making the money drop... which I really only wanted to use to fit in at the casino.

Back at the motel, I arranged my new supplies next to the bed and flipped on the television - another first since arriving in this world - before finding a local station to wait for a weather report. Figuring out the remote wasn’t hard with Helene’s memory.
As I let local and national news pieces go in one ear and out the other, I rehydrate and peel off this silly dress. The morning wasn’t so bad, but the afternoon walk had a lot more leers than I preferred to handle.
Just like in my old world, I still get a... kick out of women judging me. Their jealousy or condescension strokes my vanity like few other things. And just like when in my kingdom, I can stoically handle four or five lingering gazes from men in a short period.
> But more than that, or that amount of looks too repeatedly, and it wears me down. Makes me stop enjoying even being ’hated’ by those who think I’m their rival. Does that make any sense to you, Vrika? <
For all the good it does, my wolf actually seems to give it some thought. Or perhaps it has just learned to pretend to indulge me. Most people do learn that tactic, eventually... though rarely do beasts figure it out.
A quick snack of the remaining peanut butter follows before I sigh and think of taking a shower. It really seems that looking up weather online is far more reliable. After all, I have no idea when they will-
"Overnight storms are expected to begin around four to five AM, with periods of moderate rainfall throughout the early morning hours."
Up on the television screen, a ’meteorologist’ - and I can’t help but think of Ellie’s one deadly magic wielding anime character upon reading the term - explained what we should expect while gesturing to animated colors moving on the map behind her.
Greens, yellows, and reds that seem to be meant to represent the amount of expected precipitation. I stare at it for a while, a little enthralled. Just because this body had memories of it already doesn’t mean seeing it myself doesn’t bring feelings all my own.
> If we had technology like this in my world, I wonder if we would naturally approach the same style of food, information, and art culture. Are skyscrapers, railways, airplanes, and so much more just inevitability? <
"By tomorrow afternoon, we should see clearing skies returning. Keep in mind that-"
Reaching for the remote, I shut off the noisome device. Rain wouldn’t necessarily prevent the exchange, but it would make the entire process of pick up more unpleasant. Assuming it begins early.
I made a mental note to bring my most water-resistant clothing - the jacket. Then I did what anyone in my position would do after hearing about autumn rain coming. I went and took a nice, long, hot shower.

The dead drop location was a public park on the city’s edge... or more specifically, the hollow of a massive oak tree marked with three fairly conspicuous notches. Filled with a metal that seemed on the provided picture was probably gleaming silver.
> Not a lot, but enough to make any werewolf wary. Clever. <
Following the instructions, I had sealed the cash in a waterproof plastic bag. Had to make a special trip to the grocery store along the way, but now I’ll have more of these bags to store any sort of food.
I arrived at about 4:45, when the park was still populated enough to provide cover for my purpose - but quiet enough to move without constant observation. After verifying no one was watching too closely or that there wasn’t even any scent of other wolves nearby.
Approaching the ancient oak while carefully looking along its trunk until I found the hole, I slowly found that the hollow is larger than it appeared from a distance. Extending deep into the tree’s still vibrant core.
I pushed the package as far back as my arm could reach like the request suggested I should. Feeling like at any moment a trap would be sprung by my foolhardiness. But the hole did not eat my arm nor did an angry rodent or bird squawk at me.
And no one came rushing up to ’catch’ me or ’kill’ me. So, Vrika and I walked off without looking back... as instructed by the seller.
> Now comes more of the waiting. I think I might hate it. If it wasn’t for the apocalypse still being quite far away, I’d hate all waiting. Whatever it will be, I’m happy it isn’t tomorrow. <
