Li Xianglu immediately thought of something, the book she had tossed into a corner of the Storage Ring.
The more she worried, the more trouble came, from a distance she saw Old Man Lan’s courtyard surrounded.
Mr. Li’s face suddenly changed, he hurriedly wanted to squeeze into it, but Qin Xi put down the wooden bucket he was holding and grabbed him, saying calmly: "Don’t panic, let’s see what’s going on first."
Mr. Li took a deep breath, nodded, and then, pulling Li Xianglu along, they hurriedly placed their belongings in the backyard and rushed forward to see.
Worried about the loss of the grain, Li Xianglu could only watch from afar. Luckily, although the sight was unclear, the voices were loud and clear.
A man in his thirties, with a red armband on his sleeve and a tricky expression, frowned and with downturned lips, sinisterly said to the young man in the middle: "Lan Yunian, someone has reported you for having banned books. We need to search your house and gather evidence!"
"Hmph, you need evidence for what you claim, don’t you? I am an old man who has fought for this country all my life, even the Chairman himself would not want this if I am slandered."
The man with triangular eyes hesitated slightly, then glanced outside the courtyard swiftly and turned back with a decided tone: "We still have to search first!"
Old Man Lan scoffed, "Alright then, but just any person can’t search my house. Send two people over, but be careful with my belongings, they are all trophies given by the nation!"
Saying so, the old man slightly stepped aside. The man with triangular eyes hesitated, while Lan Yunian, lying on the ground, froze and cried out, "No, Grandpa, no."
The old man paused momentarily, and the man with triangular eyes suddenly smiled and called over a young man to go inside the house.
Old Man Lan incredulously looked at his grandson, who regretted deeply.
One of the young soldiers followed them inside to watch these people.
Meanwhile, Li Xianglu was not perturbed at all; seeing Mr. Li trying to enter several times and being held back by Qin Xi, she started gesturing towards them.
Qin Xi then pulled Mr. Li over to where Li Xianglu was.
Seeing Grandpa Li looking tense and clutching his chest, Li Xianglu hurriedly helped him sit down and whispered a few words into his ear.
Mr. Li, upon hearing this, his eyes brightened, and he took a long breath which seemed to relieve him a bit.
Qin Xi, not understanding but seeing Mr. Li looking much better, gently suggested, "Grandpa Li, should I go and see Uncle He from the Armed Forces Department?"
Mr. Li shook his head, "This sensitive matter should not involve him, otherwise, he can’t extricate himself."
Seeing Mr. Li’s firm response, Qin Xi nodded and looked towards the courtyard, seeing the two inspectors come out of the house with ugly expressions.
The young soldier excitedly saluted and reported: "Report, we have checked everything, there is no reactionary literature, it’s all false accusations!"
Upon hearing this, Old Man Lan visibly relaxed, his demeanor growing more resolute: "This is a false accusation, I will report this to the organization, you are framing an old cadre who has worked hard for the country all his life!"
At these words, the man with triangular eyes visibly twitched, and the Hong Guards were also frightened, starting to shift blame.
Soon, the crowd dispersed, and Mr. Li finally entered with his granddaughter and Qin Xi.
Seeing Mr. Li, Old Man Lan’s mood brightened, and seeing people had left, he quickly welcomed them inside.
Lan Yunian, who had been beaten up, saw the people coming in, his expression disdainful, and he muttered: "Where were you earlier? You show up now that there’s no problem."
After speaking, he dodged into the room, ignoring the dagger-like glare from Old Man Lan, and went upstairs with a thump, thump, thump.
Qin Xi moved all his things over to the courtyard before everyone entered the house together.
Li Xianglu directly took out a thin book from her bag and handed it over, which was actually taken out from the Storage Ring just now and put into the bag.
Mr. Li quickly flipped to the back of the book, saw a handwritten letter, and his face suddenly changed color, then he quickly scanned the content of the book.
Old Man Lan stood by, clueless as to what had happened to his old friend. Seeing him holding a book, he also paused, took the book from him, and started reading.
It was a letter written to his grandson, stating that their home had been searched by the Hong Guards, and previously, the grandson had told him that the Hong Guards were nothing but wild-dog bandits, claiming that the new society shouldn’t be like this; this was nothing but blatant reactionary language.
Gratefully casting a glance, he grabbed a walking stick by the staircase and thumped upstairs.
Mr. Li, meanwhile, caught his breath and sat down to drink tea, while Qin Xi said he would step out first and left after saying goodbye.
Li Xianglu helped Mr. Li sit on a softer sofa, then raised his legs up high with a chair to increase blood flow.
Upstairs, sounds of crashing and Old Man Lan’s angry roars came in waves.
Soon after, sounds of descending the stairs were heard; almost tumbling down, he fell to the ground, and without pausing, he scrambled up and ran outside. This person was Old Man Lan’s grandson.
A few minutes later, Old Man Lan came down holding the book, not stopping to speak first; he found a wash basin and set fire to cleanse it, then hurriedly called the housekeeper in the kitchen to clean up and tidy the upstairs.
Only then did they see that his old friend’s face was somewhat pale, sitting anxiously on the side asking questions.
Li Xianglu sighed and said: "Grandpa was a bit tensed just now, his face didn’t look good, but he’s much better after some rest."
Old Man Lan, seeing the feet raised high, asked with some puzzlement: "What’s this about?"
Li Xianglu handed a bowl of water to grandpa and explained: "This is a method taught by Uncle Qin next door; raising the legs helps the heart pump blood faster."
Oh, Old Man Lan suddenly realized and chuckled a bit embarrassedly: "Old buddy, thanks to you this time, if it wasn’t for your granddaughter’s cleverness, we might have had a serious issue today."
Mr. Li also nodded his head, indeed, this girl was smart. Even if they didn’t find the books today, the fact that Old Man Lan offered them books wasn’t a secret and could involve their families sooner or later; both families would be in trouble.
Mr. Li shook his head and said, "Well, it’s all in the past now, but Yunian, you need to manage better."
Old Man Lan immediately nodded: "Right, old friend, take a look at the latest newspaper."
Li Huai Ren, upon hearing this, instantly changed his demeanor, sat up, and started reading the newspaper.
Li Xianglu curiously stood behind and stared closely at it; the headline was about persisting in moving forward, and beside it, a piece of great news, starting next month, the supply of sweet potato dry goods would increase by half a pound.
What is this, not even related news, why both could top the headline.
But Mr. Li’s expression became obscure, murmuring lowly: "Today we went to get food supplies, and some supplies were stopped."
Old Man Lan also nodded and sighed: "Yes, the direction up top has changed."
Li Xianglu was completely baffled.
