Chapter 32: 032 Interrogation

Li Xianglu did not leave; she insisted on staying, eager to hear what this shameless woman would spout.

Li Xianglu feared that in her absence, the woman would slander her, especially since she had clearly heard the Wang Brothers audaciously claim that she had eloped with someone!

Qin Xi looked at the young girl sitting in the chair with a somewhat complicated expression, it seemed as if the girl had changed.

Ge Sanmei’s face turned ugly as soon as she saw her man and his older brother step out of the room. She looked helplessly aside, only to see her second son standing there with a cold face, as if everything happening had nothing to do with him.

Even though Ge Sanmei knew that her second son had discussed with her earlier on the road that if anything went wrong with this matter, she should take the blame and not involve him, she still felt especially distressed facing these issues. Who was she doing this for? It was for her second son, who had a good job and a respectable status, while she, the mother, was left with nothing but sacrifice.

Li Erfu saw his old woman coming out, and all his stiffness and helplessness turned into anger. He stepped forward and slapped her to the ground, then started vehemently kicking her, berating over and over like a man possessed: "How dare you do this, selling your own daughter, are you even human, are you?!"

Ge Sanmei had never been beaten by Li Erfu in all the years they had been married. Seeing such violence from her husband for the first time left her in shock, but the pain she felt was real. Hearing his words, she quickly retorted: "Oh, I’m going to die! Can’t I marry off my own daughter? Do I, as her mother, not even have this right? Li Erfu, you son of a b*tch, you hit me! I bore your children and kept your house, and you still hit me! Oh, I can’t take this!" Saying this, Ge Sanmei collapsed on the ground, sobbing uncontrollably, her hair a disheveled mess, the picture of aggrievement.

Li Xianglu, sitting in the background, watched all Ge Sanmei’s actions intently, feeling as if a fire was burning in her chest.

Li Dafu was clueless about what was happening before his eyes, why his younger brother had started fighting with his wife. What was going on? But hearing his brother’s intermittent accusations, Li Dafu’s face changed dramatically, and he quickly turned to Wang Aijun standing aside: "Teacher Wang, let me see that marriage document."

With a mocking smile, Wang Aijun unfolded the paper and held it up high, not handing it over to Li Dafu. It was evidence proving they hadn’t trafficked anyone, so it couldn’t just be given away—what if it was destroyed?

Both Li brothers were literate, so Li Dafu immediately recognized Ge Sanmei’s signature and thumbprint on the document. Recalling everything that had happened, he realized what was going on. They had lost their advantage, and now he wondered how to resolve the situation before them.

Suddenly, Li Dafu saw the Qin Family’s young and old standing beside them. His eyes lit up, and he quickly moved over to them and began murmuring.

It was just as Qin Xi had speculated: the young girl from Li Erfu’s house had been tricked by her own mother into coming here, and there must be some unsavory deal between Ge Sanmei and the Wang family. Oh, and the matter of Li Jianwen’s job—Qin Xi shook his head and chuckled.

After speaking with the young man from the Qin Family, Li Dafu approached his younger brother, squatting on the ground, and said: "Er Fu, our family is unfortunate indeed. This wife of yours has colluded with outsiders to traffic our child. You may as well divorce her. In this way, she will no longer be considered part of the Li Family. Let’s hand her over to the Armed Forces Department as a child trafficker."

Upon hearing this, Ge Sanmei, who was still throwing a tantrum on the ground, suddenly opened her eyes wide in disbelief and cried out: "Big Brother!"

Li Dafu said disdainfully and loudly, "Who are you calling uncle? You heartless woman, you actually conspired with others to kidnap your own daughter. Tell us, how much did they pay you!"

At that moment, the faces of the Wang Brothers behind him suddenly changed. Before they had the chance to step forward and speak, they were stunned by Ge Sanmei’s reply: "It was the Wang family. They offered my second son a job with a transportation team, and that’s why I agreed to marry Xiang off to them. It was their doing, not mine, not mine!"

Everyone could hear her loud voice clearly. He Chongguang, who had been enjoying the commotion from the side, smiled and stepped forward, saying, "Alright, let’s clear up what exactly happened. Everyone should go to the County Armed Forces Department and explain themselves. Director Wang, let’s go. It’s convenient since I’ve borrowed a truck from the county."

The Wang brothers exchanged a look, glanced at Ge Sanmei thrashing on the ground, and then at the Li brothers; they nodded in agreement.

Thus, the group boarded the truck. He Chongguang arranged for the young girl to be placed in the truck’s passenger seat; she likely needed to be taken to the hospital.

Qin Xi, accompanied by his brother and the remaining strong men of the Li Family Village Production Team, headed back first. Of course, they had no transportation and had to walk.

Li Jianqing was entirely relieved, his face a mixture of red and pale but beaming with unchecked joy. It was great that his sister was rescued.

Li Jianqing hurried a few steps to catch up with Qin Xi and said somewhat hesitantly, "Brother Qin, was that note from you?"

Qin Xi looked at Li Jianqing with profound eyes. Thinking of how frantic the young man had been while searching for his sister, he smiled and replied, "No, it wasn’t. I only learned from Qin Zhen that you had discovered your sister’s whereabouts, and that’s when I went to the county to call for help."

Li Jianqing raised an eyebrow in confusion; if not Brother Qin, then who?

Meanwhile, the truck carried everyone to the County Committee’s compound, where He Chongguang found a large conference room. The county’s public security bureau personnel were summoned to take statements and conduct interrogations. The earlier casual mood of just having a chat to clear things up was gone; now that it was a matter involving the public security bureau, there was no easy resolution.

Wang Xiwang was sweating with anxiety, as he felt he couldn’t extricate himself from the situation no matter how it played out.

To avoid contradicting each other, everyone was seated separately and watched over. Then, they went in one by one to give their statements and sign their names.

Li Xianglu was taken to the county hospital for a glucose IV. To recover faster, she secretly drank two bags of milk and ate some biscuits until she felt revitalized.

By the afternoon, the situation had mostly been clarified, and Li Xianglu was also brought in for questioning.

Li Xianglu recounted the whole incident from beginning to end, explaining how her own mother, eldest uncle, and second brother, to prevent her from struggling and being discovered, had all agreed to claim they were hauling a lamb - which sent He Chongguang and an officer from the public security bureau into a fury!
