Chapter 144: 140 fixed-line phones second update
After a meal, Grandpa Li and Qin Shouren both drank a bit too much and decided that the two kids should first get their marriage certificate and then hold the wedding ceremony when Li Xianglu turns twenty.
Now that the decision was made, Li Xianglu didn’t find it difficult, but Qin Zhen looked at Li Xianglu with a face full of discomfort.
Li Xianglu saw that he ate half a bowl less today and couldn’t help but ask: "What’s the matter, why did you eat so little?"
Qin Zhen’s face brightened, he had purposely eaten less, and now that it was noticed, he pretended to be unhappy and said: "What am I going to do if you and brother get married?"
Li Xianglu was stunned. What did he mean? What was he going to do? Surely it wasn’t going to be a threesome? Li Xianglu shuddered, shook her head and asked, "How would me marrying your brother affect anything? Isn’t it the same as before?"
Qin Zhen paused, it seemed so indeed, so he stretched his bowl forward and said, "I want another bowl!"
Li Xianglu....
April 2nd was Li Xianglu’s 18th birthday. After a discussion, they decided to register on April 2nd and then the two families would gather to have a meal, choosing not to cook at home but to order a table of dishes at Quanjude to celebrate.
It wasn’t until the afternoon when Qin Shouhan sobered up that he prepared to leave, but Qin Xi started talking with Li Xianglu at the doorway.
"What else do you want?"
Li Xianglu was puzzled for a moment: "Want what?"
Qin Xi sighed. The girl could be really clever at times, but quite naive at other times.
"A ring, don’t you want a wedding ring?"
Li Xianglu paused and blinked, "Isn’t there a ring made of gold and jade in that set of glass-type jewelry?"
Qin Xi shook his head: "That doesn’t count."
Ah, that doesn’t count? If that set of jewelry were sold after keeping it for forty years, it would definitely be worth tens of millions. If such a gift isn’t considered valuable, then what is?
Qin Xi reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a red, gold velvet bag, then handed it over to Li Xianglu.
Li Xianglu took it, carefully opened it, and retrieved a solid object from inside.
The little thing’s pinkish glow sparkled under the street lamps. Li Xianglu blinked her eyes; diamonds last forever, a single one could cause bankruptcy, this was also a rare pink diamond, and such a large one at that, at least ten carats.
Seeing the young girl’s cheeks flushed under the light, looking enchanted, Qin Xi couldn’t help but smile, this girl was truly obsessed with riches, and he tenderly ruffled her hair and said: "Let’s set it in platinum for you."
Li Xianglu quickly nodded her head, fearing that if she agreed too slowly, the other party might refuse.
Qin Xi glanced at his brother who was persistently calling him from ahead, and smiled at Li Xianglu, "Keep the gift safe, when I’m free I’ll take you to get it set, I know a place where they can do it."
Li Xianglu watched as he walked away under the dim street lamps, and her heart suddenly started racing.
Touching her somewhat hot face, Li Xianglu tightly gripped the little cloth bag and returned to the yard.
Mr. Li heard the sound of the door and then the sound of water being poured outside. He sighed, unable to go a day without washing his feet. He had heard Shou Han saying that Qin Xi was just the same way; it seemed that the young couple really matched well.
Li Xianglu brought in the water for foot washing and saw that Grandpa had gone to bed without washing his feet. She chided, "Grandpa, why aren’t you listening again?"
Mr. Li sighed resignedly, "Alright, Grandpa is wrong," and then sat up.
Li Xianglu brought the water over, and since Mr. Li had drunk a bit too much today, she carefully helped him scrub his feet with the washcloth.
Mr. Li sighed and said, "Although Qin Shen is a little reckless, the Qin Family father and son are both good people. You aren’t living together after getting married, so it’s actually not bad."
Li Xianglu was startled and responded, "What are you saying, Grandpa? Qin Xi said that he will live with us in the future."
Mr. Li was stunned, What?
After thinking for a while, Li Xianglu shared the conversation she had with Qin Xi when they bought the thermos: "Qin Xi said that our future children will take your surname, Grandpa. So don’t worry, you’ll have plenty more to be involved with!" Li Xianglu knew that the elderly must have a sense of purpose in life; otherwise, they age very quickly.
Upon hearing this, Mr. Li immediately sobered up, disbelieving his ears, "What did you just say? Our children will take my surname?"
Li Xianglu nodded, wiped his feet, and placed them on the bed before saying, "Yes, I don’t mind at all. Taking Grandpa’s surname means taking my surname."
However, Mr. Li shook his head; it was different for him. He had never had his own children in his life, and as he grew older, the desire only increased. Having Xiangxiang was still somewhat a regret, as she wasn’t a boy, but the more he bonded with her, the more he felt compensated by God. Yet, having a child with his own surname would indeed be different.
Mr. Li leaned back on the bed, pulled the quilt, and said with a smile, "You kids are considerate; all good children."
Li Xianglu drew the curtains and poured some hot water into a basin beside her before saying, "It’s just that Grandpa still doesn’t talk about Grandma’s matters."
Li Huai Ren was startled, Grandma’s matters? Suddenly, it dawned on him—it’s Ah Yin. But there was too much entangled in that matter, some even relating to state secrets. After a pause, he said, "You’ll know about your grandma when you meet her. I can’t speak about it just yet."
Li Xianglu raised an eyebrow and shook her head, "Alright, always so secretive." Speaking, she pulled out a small package from her pocket, "Look, this is what Qin Xi gave me."
Mr. Li took it, opened it under the light, and exclaimed, realizing it was a pink diamond. That clever boy, originally he had some issues with Qin Zhen’s stubborn nature, yet Qin Xi was a good kid. Considering his granddaughter and Qin Xi grew up together, knowing each other thoroughly, and their feelings are genuine, how could he let the two of them have regrets?
Mr. Li nodded, "Keep it safe; make a setting for it when the situation is right, then wear it. It’s a symbol of status."
Li Xianglu, thinking about wearing a diamond as big as a pigeon’s egg to school, shuddered in horror. She didn’t want that; better to keep it safe in case it got lost.
In the following days, Grandpa Li had a landline installed in the house, the old-fashioned rotary type which still required an operator to connect calls.
Once the phone was set up, Li Xianglu happily called Xi Yunmei.
The call connected, and an older woman answered. Li Xianglu asked to speak to Xi Yunmei, and was told to wait a moment. Soon, she heard the sound of footsteps coming downstairs.
Quickly, a somewhat distorted voice came through the phone, "Hello."
Li Xianglu, feigning depth, greeted, "Hello, may I speak to Miss Xi?"
Xi Yunmei was taken aback, then burst into laughter, "Xiangxiang, you’re in the capital!"
