Li Xianglu washed her face and casually pulled her messy hair into a bun before heading out.
By then, the dining table was already full, and the seat in front of Qin Xi was empty. After greeting everyone, Li Xianglu sat down.
It was only then that Mr. Pang got a clear look at the girl’s appearance. With her curved eyebrows and large doe eyes, she had very fair skin, and her hair was styled in a coif like a woman’s, giving her a childish attempt at looking adult-like, which was particularly adorable.
The young man sitting next to her brightened up at the sight of Li Xianglu and turned to Mr. Pang, "Dad, you haven’t introduced who this is yet?"
Mr. Pang frowned, slightly displeased.
Mrs. Pang spoke up, "This is your grandpa’s comrade’s granddaughter, Li Xianglu." Then she gently addressed Li Xianglu, "Xiangxiang, this is my youngest son, Pang Xinran, a spoiled child, but with a good heart. Don’t mind him."
Li Xianglu didn’t like this young man before her. He had a sleazy air about him, and he liked to stare inappropriately when looking at people, which was annoying. Seeing her grandfather somewhat unhappy, she responded indifferently, "Since Granny Pang put it that way, I won’t mind then."
Mrs. Pang was stunned. The girl had bluntly put her in her place. Usually, people would smile and respond cheerfully to her comments, not reacting like Li Xianglu did.
Mr. Pang frowned and said, "Look at you, what have you turned the kid into? All that sleaziness annoys me. Send him to the military in the spring for two years of training before he comes back."
Upon hearing this, Pang Xinran immediately protested, claiming he’d rather die than join the military. The situation at the dining table turned chaotic, and eventually mother and son both went upstairs, leaving Mr. Pang to sheepishly apologize to Li Huai Ren, "Mr. Li, sorry for the spectacle. It gets tiring dealing with them."
Mr. Li didn’t offer his old friend any face, "Back then, it was you who insisted on being with her. Look at your youngest son now, he could definitely compete with Old Man Lan’s grandson. But you better keep him in line. She is my only granddaughter, and if he keeps behaving this way, don’t blame me."
Hearing this, Mr. Pang quickly clasped his hands together in a pleading gesture, "Alright, alright, I will keep him in check. Let’s go out for lunch; having him at home is too vexing."
Mr. Li shook his head, "Old Xun found a house for me to look at. I need to see it since my granddaughter is happy about it in April. I need to secure it quickly."
Qin Xi and Qin Zhen didn’t take anything since they would be reporting to school in a few days. The things could be left at Mr. Li’s place. Before leaving, Qin Xi reminded Li Xianglu to be careful and not stray far from her grandfather. Knowing Qin Xi was worried about the local thug, she nodded in acknowledgment.
After seeing off the two, Grandpa Li returned to the courtyard. Mr. Pang had arranged a car, a jeep with a cover, which was warm inside. Helping her grandfather into the car, Li Xianglu was about to get in when she heard someone calling from behind. Mr. Pang rushed out of the house calling urgently for her to get her grandfather because someone was looking for him.
Grandpa Li, poking his head out of the car, asked in confusion, "Who is looking for me, to come all the way here?"
Mr. Pang explained, waving his hand, "Someone from the United States. They went to your old home first, and just as they reached, they heard you were in the capital and followed here, saying they would arrive by eleven."
Upon hearing that it was someone from the United States, Mr. Li was startled but got out of the car. Li Xianglu didn’t ask further, assisting Grandpa Li back inside.
Once seated, Mr. Li inquired more about the phone call. Mr. Pang mentioned that a friend had called asking if Li Huai Ren was there; he confirmed, and the caller instructed to have him stay put as someone would be arriving soon to meet him.
Li Xianglu, unable to leave the house, went back to her room and neatly categorized their belongings. Qin Zhen was going to study in Shanghai, requiring a complete set of quilts and mattresses, with at least two bedsheets. Thinking it over, Li Xianglu decided to take several duvet covers from her Storage Ring and find a tailor shop to have them remade into bedsheets. Beds at the school were ninety centimeters wide, while the duvet covers from the future were two meters by two meters and thirty centimeters, which should yield at least three bedsheets.
After roughly sorting out the items, she went out to see her grandfather sitting on the sofa, continuously watching the time and appearing quite nervous. Li Xianglu, blaming herself for not noticing her grandfather’s unusual mood earlier, quickly sat next to him to reassure him: "Grandpa, what’s really bothering you? Don’t be nervous, they will arrive soon."
Mr. Li glanced at his granddaughter and smiled, saying, "Grandpa is a bit nervous."
Li Xianglu raised an eyebrow: "Do you know who is coming?"
Mr. Li sighed as he looked at his granddaughter: "If I’m not mistaken, it should be the person from the photograph."
From the photograph?
Instantly, Li Xianglu thought of a certain photo—the one that had slipped out of the folder, the woman holding the child in that photo. Could it be Grandpa’s lover?
While Li Xianglu was lost in her thoughts, the phone rang again. Mr. Pang, who was reading the newspaper, answered it, simply saying, "Yes, let them in. We’ve already made contact. Please bring them here, thank you."
The visitors had arrived.
Seeing her grandfather stand up nervously, Li Xianglu quickly got up to help him out.
The wind in the capital was strong in March, and standing in the courtyard was quite chilly. Fortunately, after waiting for about seven to eight minutes, a young soldier appeared around the corner of the building escorting a man carrying a briefcase.
Mr. Li was initially startled, then a strong disappointment appeared on his face.
Li Xianglu smiled reassuringly: "Perhaps it’s someone sent by Grandma."
Hearing his granddaughter refer to her as Grandma, Li Huai Ren first looked puzzled, then laughed, thinking that she indeed was a grandma now, though knowing her personality, she probably wouldn’t like to be addressed as such.
The man, wearing gold-rimmed glasses and with neatly combed-back hair, didn’t speak until he had taken out a photo from his bag for comparison, then smiled and asked, "Are you Mr. Li Huai Ren?"
Mr. Li nodded, also curiously assessing the man who looked to be in his thirties. Surely he wasn’t Ah Qi.
The man smiled and said, "I am Xu Xi, the legal advisor of Miss Su Yan. Miss Su has sent me to meet with Mr. Li Huai Ren."
Li Xianglu found the man’s speaking manner rather peculiar, as it had a hint of the period of the Republic.
Mr. Li nodded and welcomed the man inside.
As Mr. Pang’s old friend arrived, he excused himself to go upstairs while Li Xianglu poured two glasses of water and also found an excuse to leave.
