Chapter 90: [Weekly Bonus Chapter 1/2] Trial And Deception (1)

Adrian and Sara talked their hearts out in the time that remained. The room was still dark as ever, but thanks to their unique eyes, they could see each other and converse easily.

As they talked, it dawned on Adrian why the room was so dark. The Tulkas must have figured out Sara’s secret of sparing certain people and wanted to hinder her ability to see, making her work for them without favouritism toward her friends.

But what they didn’t realise was that a Lamia like Sara had eyes that could see in the dark, though just barely. It was enough for her to recognise faces when she looked closely. That’s how she recognised Adrian, even though he had changed quite a bit.

But there was something strange. Sara kept bringing up someone named Sophia, and how she talked about her made Adrian feel like she thought he knew Sophia well and that they shared a close relationship.

No matter how hard he tried, Adrian couldn’t remember anyone named Sophia. According to Sara, Sophia was a hero like them and was from Earth, just like him.

Adrian pondered Sara’s words. If there was another Earthling like him around, he figured he would have remembered them. But he didn’t.

"...let’s talk about something else," Adrian muttered, rubbing his temples as a sudden headache crept over him.

Sara nodded, sensing something must have happened between the two. After all, even the strongest of relationships failed sometimes, and a year was a long time for something to happen.

"What about this place?" Adrian asked, hinting about the Tulkas. "What do you know about them? It doesn’t matter how insignificant the information is. Even the smallest details count."

Unfortunately, Sara didn’t have much information other than what the ’trial’ consisted of. It was expected since she had spent more than a year trapped in the room with nowhere to go.

Either way, Adrian got the info he would need immediately after the tribals took him away, and that was enough. He could figure out the rest later on his own.

Half an hour later, they felt someone’s presence outside and cut their reunion short, but not before Adrian promised to save Sara and take her back.

The door burst open, and six Tulkas stormed in, armed and ready. Sara retreated into a corner, her body tense with fear, coiling away from the newcomers.

Adrian’s heart sank at the sight of Sara, once a formidable warrior, now shrinking away in terror. He couldn’t help but wonder what the tribe had done to reduce her to this state.

However, he didn’t get much time to think about anything as he felt a bunch of strong hands grab him roughly, pulling him out of the dark and into the blinding sunlight.

Blinking rapidly, he squinted against the sudden brightness, trying to adjust. Before he could fully comprehend what was happening, the tribals swiftly bound his hands and legs, rendering him unable to move freely.

With his vision still blurry, Adrian stumbled forward as the tribals led him away to an unknown destination. The tribals kept shouting in their language that differed slightly from the Banurs’, but now and then, Adrian would hear a familiar word and piece together what they were saying.

’Time for the trial huh?’ Adrian thought. ’So far, everything is going as Sara told me. Let’s see what’s next in store for me.’

Within moments, Adrian found himself inside a massive cage, and in it stood a lone goblin with a small club in his hands. A crowd of onlookers, tribals and Nexarians alike, had gathered there and looked like they were placing bets on the fight.

The task was simple. Adrian had to beat the creature before him to move to the next level. The more monsters he took down, the higher his status would rise with the tribe.

’That’s not what I want, though.’

Before doing anything, Adrian knew he needed to perform adequately to not raise suspicion, as it might put Sara in danger, but not well enough to gain too much attention.

Too much attention would unnecessarily complicate his undercover mission. But there was another reason why he wanted to present himself as weak.

The other heroes, who had been turned into slaves, remembered him as the weakest hero. Hence, it would be problematic for him if he suddenly turned out to be stronger than expected.

’But more importantly, performing just enough to make the cut-off would allow me to enter the ’other facility’, and that’s all I really want.’

With a loud whistle, the fight began. Adrian raised his fists to protect his face but intentionally left many gaps in his defence to lure the creature towards him.

Sure enough, the goblin, the brainless creature it was, took the bait. The goblin sneered, brandishing its wooden club with a wicked grin.

The goblin swung its club wildly, aiming for Adrian’s head. With quick reflexes, Adrian ducked and dodged, narrowly avoiding the brunt of the attack. He stumbled backwards, pretending to trip over his foot, but it was all part of his plan.

As the goblin closed in, thinking victory was within its grasp, Adrian sprang into action. With a swift movement, he kicked the goblin in his knee, making it fall over.

Surprised by the unexpected attack, the goblin unintentionally let go of the club, ending up in Adrian’s hand. Fear flickered in the goblin’s eyes as Adrian turned the tables, using the wooden club to deliver a powerful blow to its side.

The goblin fell on its back, stunned by the unexpected reversal. With a strike, Adrian brought the club down on the goblin’s head. The creature’s vision blurred as the club hit him, but it wasn’t enough to finish him off since Adrian was holding back his true strength.

"You’re a thick-headed bastard, are you?" Adrian snarled, adding more intensity to his performance and began hammering the goblin’s head till only a pool of blood and bones remained where the creature’s head once was.
