Chapter 76: Gluttonous Commander (4)
Chapter 76: Gluttonous Commander (4)
Soon, another volley of arrows followed. But this time, no painful cries were coming from the enemies. They must have a few mages in the army using shield magic to block the arrows.
But why didn’t they bother stopping the arrows before if there were mages? Akila knew something was wrong, but he couldn’t keep his focus on them as more and more explosive barrels made their way towards them.
"Forget about the men! Shoot fire arrows at those barrels first!" he yelled, and the archers complied.
Unlike before, the barrels were exclusively filled with explosives. As such, allowing them close to the settlement would lead to disaster. While the bullets might not be enough to kill them, explosives were a different story.
The barrels exploded as soon as the arrows hit them, causing great harm to the incoming army. But it wasn’t all good news.
"Akila," a woman exclaimed, hurrying down from the watchtower. "We’re under attack-"
"I already know that! Why do you think I’m here?"
"No, we’re under attack from the south side! The enemies fooled us!"
"What?"
Akila exclaimed before rushing towards the other end of the settlement, and sure enough, Malachi was there along with half of the army they had seen before.
Akila, like the rest of the tribe, was confused about it. How did they cross the entirety of the settlement without anyone noticing? It then hit him.
The purpose of the explosive barrels wasn’t to destroy the settlement as the tribe believed. They served as a distraction.
The Nexarians knew the tribals would go after the barrels first and the noise and smoke from the explosions to hide while they used teleportation magic to launch a surprise attack.
And it worked for them as the dozens of corpses were strewn around them... the heartless bastards hadn’t even spared the children. While some of the soldiers had regretful expressions, Malachi didn’t as he waved at Akila with a child’s severed arm.
Akila seethed in rage like never before. Soon, the rest of his crew joined him as the tribals slowly gathered, taking in the horrifying scene.
"Easy there, folks. No need to rush," Malachi smirked as the tribals got into position. "I’ll wait till you’re in position. Kicking an unprepared enemy’s ass didn’t mean much either way."
Akila’s gaze turned red when Malachi discarded the severed arm. The Nexarian commander was a few inches shy of him, yet his body was more built.
The ridiculous amount of muscles on him showed he was a front liner, but Akila didn’t expect someone with such a burly figure to use a fragile weapon as a rapier.
Moreover, a weapon like the rapier was usually owned by agile folks. It made Akila wonder if Malachi was trying to deceive him into thinking he couldn’t handle the rapier effectively because of his size.
’It doesn’t matter whether he can wield the weapon to its full potential,’ Akila thought. ’All that matters is that he dies.’
Akila took a step forward, wielding his axe. The tribe followed in his footsteps, but right before jumping in, Akila’s nose twitched. He took a sniff and immediately realised it was grease.
"EVERYONE FALL BACK!" Akila shouted, but it was too late.
Malachi tossed his cigar, and suddenly, a blazing fire wall appeared before them. Those lucky and agile enough were able to escape, but the flames engulfed them, and fire stuck to them, melting their skin.
It was no ordinary fire, but magic-infused napalm that clung to their bodies no matter how the tribals tried to put it out. Since it only had a faint smell of grease, it was difficult to detect and even if someone did, it was unlikely they’d be able to escape.
The Banurs moved with an unexpected speed, avoiding the flames. Unfortunately, Akila wasn’t as fortunate. The fire touched his shoulder, forcing him to quickly cut away a piece of his flesh to prevent the flames from spreading further and injuring him worse than he did to himself.
"Interesting... very interesting..." Malachi mumbled when he saw how Akila handled the napalm. "It’d be an honour to add you to my collection."
Akila didn’t know what the commander was yapping about, nor did he care about it. With a sign, the tribals dropped their ranged weapons and drew the blades.
"I’m going to make you pray to the gods for a quick death that would never come," Akila snarled before charging, an enraged horde of tribals following him.
The tribals ran into the Nexarians with surprising strength and agility and easily managed to push them back. They brought their shield out, but it was of no use as the tribals struck them.
While the army was being pushed back, the same wasn’t true for Malachi, who was having the time of his life fighting the savage monkeys. It only took him a minute to kill three of their men before turning his attention towards Akila.
But Shula had other plans as he kicked the Nexarian commander, making himself a target since he knew Akila was injured. Like Akila, Shula also wielded a battle axe and swung it at Malachi.
The commander found himself taken aback by the unexpected assault. Despite the surprise, he quickly regained his composure and counterattacked, thrusting his rapier toward Shula.
Though Shula managed to block the attack with the blade of his axe, he underestimated the force behind the pointed sword and was sent flying backwards.
Malachi, however, was immediately on him, swinging the blade once again. Having learned his lesson, this time, Shula swerved to the right to avoid the attack and brought the battleaxe up in a brutal swing. The axe missed Malachi’s neck by a hair’s width, forcing him to retreat.
"...that was too close," Malachi mumbled, weirdly eyeing Shula. "But you’ll regret missing that shot because it was your only chance at taking me down."
