Chimaera's Conquest: The Legend Of The Devourer -
Chapter 287: The Tower (1)
Chapter 287: The Tower (1)
Adrian leaned on the terrace railing, his eyes scanning the settlement and what lay beyond. The Earth had changed so much, but at the moment, he didn’t seem to care about all that, as his thoughts kept drifting back to his mother.
He had disowned her, shut her out of his life over mistakes she had made in the past. At the time, it seemed like the right decision. But now, with the world in chaos and no way to know if she was even alive, he was suddenly filled with regret.
She was his last living relative, the only connection to his old life. He wondered if she was somewhere out there in the barren lands, struggling to survive or, worse, already gone.
But there was more to his regret. If she were alive, he could ask her about Vernian. Was Vernian truly his twin, or was it another of Maria’s twisted experiments meant to torment him? These questions haunted him, and without his mother, he feared he might never find answers.
’Can’t believe I took out that anger on Amelia.’
<Honestly, you didn’t lie about anything, Master.>
’I know. But some things are better left unsaid.’
"Mr Know-it-all is lost in thoughts, huh?"
He turned to see George approaching, holding two bottles of beer. George had always been a steady presence for Adrian, someone he could rely on. The recent years seemed to have made a small dent in it somewhere, but it wasn’t enough to break their bond.
"You look like you could use this," George said, handing Adrian a beer.
"Apocalypse or not, people can never go without liquor," Adrian chuckled, his fingers wrapping around the cold glass.
He took a long sip, the bitter taste a welcome distraction. Unfortunately, his body detoxified it instantly. Regardless, the beer wasn’t as important as the company as George joined him at the railing, staring at the same bleak view.
"You know, what Rick said about us staying behind wasn’t completely true," George said, sipping his beer. "We didn’t stay to fight the Netherites or whatever they’re called.
We stayed because Vesper and Amelia were convinced you were alive and would come back. That’s why we set up a base here in Hawaii. But the elf is too proud to admit it."
"You guys thought we were dead?" Adrian asked, smiling at the thought.
"You were missing for three years. What did you expect?" George said, giving Adrian a pat on the back. "But in all that time, Amelia never stopped checking the scanners for dungeon activity. That’s how we found you."
"What are you getting at?"
"She cares about you and Sophia," George replied. "I don’t know what you people have gone through in Nexaria, but I know she would never intentionally do anything to piss you off. Maybe, instead of storming out, you should try talking to her, this time when emotions aren’t running high."
Adrian didn’t reply and turned his gaze away. He knew Amelia wouldn’t hurt him, but she was siding with the ones who killed A’Mila. That was something he couldn’t wrap his head around.
However, he knew one thing. He wasn’t needed on Earth anymore. Things had gone to shit as much as they possibly could. Besides, if the entities were now mortal, he knew what he had to do next.
’No mortal has ever killed god. That’s what Zeus told me. But no one said anything about not killing mortals within the tower.’
<They might have given up their immortality but hadn’t lost their strength. They were gods for a reason. Please think carefully before making a decision, Master.>
’Ain’t nobody got time for that. Besides, thinking hasn’t been my strong suit since I awoken as a chimaera.’
"Maria and Seraphina, where are those two?" Adrian asked, although he already expected where those two would be.
"In the tower, obviously," George replied, tossing a set of keys towards Adrian. Seraphina left the moment the towers appeared. As for Maria, I have no idea when, but she is there."
"What’s this?"
"My car keys that I accidentally dropped somewhere," George replied with a sly smile. "I also left the map to the nearest tower in the car. It would be a shame if someone found the keys and drove it to the tower."
Adrian pocketed the keys and smiled back. The rascal of a friend always knew how to read his mind, even without any abilities. Without thinking much, Adrian pulled him for a hug.
"You forgot to say no homo. But it’s alright," George laughed before pointing somewhere. "Take the back exit if you’re planning to go for a walk. I have already paid off the guard there."
"How can I ever repay you for this generosity?"
"Find me a wife, that should be enough-"
"Why? Is Amelia not cutting it for you?"
George’s cheeks flushed the moment Adrian said that. Usually, the lawyer in him would immediately reject such accusations, but George didn’t disagree.
"What gave it away?" George asked, scratching the back of his head.
"I have known you my entire life," Adrian replied, placing his hand on George’s shoulder. "Besides, the way you rushed over to clear our misunderstanding and hopefully get me to talk things out with her... yeah, that was enough."
"...you’re okay with it?"
"Why won’t I be? My best friend is in a relationship with another good friend of mine. What more could I ask for?" Adrian smiled. "Just treat her well. She has been through a lot and deserves some happiness. Also, keep everyone busy until I’m gone."
"Wait, I thought you’d take Sophia with you?"
Adrian shook his head. He had thought about it and decided climbing the tower was something he needed to do alone. If he were to go against the pantheons, then it would be safer not to give them any opportunity to hurt him. But he couldn’t tell George that, so he came up with a lie.
"You all need help fighting the Netherites," he said. "And no one is better at that than Sophia. So it would be better if I left alone."
"Well... as you say," George shrugged, despite knowing that Adrian was lying to him. "Have a safe trip, and try not to let anyone know I helped you or Amelia would rip me a new one."
"The sight almost makes me want to stay," Adrian replied, putting down the empty bottle and rushed jumped off the building to leave before anyone could catch the wind.
