Chapter 196: Super Rookie (2)

The lobby was already busy, but that didn’t stop the guild scouters from pouring in like a flood. From seeing the emblems they wore proudly on their sleeves, one could know what guild they belonged to.

It was not like anyone had the time to give them special treatment, so most of them went unnoticed.

Once inside, the scouts immediately made a beeline for the reception. Usually, only three receptionists worked there at any given time, but due to the overwhelming number of calls and queries they were receiving, their number had to be increased to twenty.

But that didn’t stop the scouters from interrupting them.

"Excuse me," one scouter said, leaning over the counter. We need to know Adrian and his team’s whereabouts. It’s urgent."

"Just a moment, please," the young lady said, placing the call on hold and giving the scouter a form to fill.

"What is this?" the scouter asked, not looking at the paper. "I’d like to know where they are-"

"Mr Fenrir and his team left the premises right after their tests were completed," the receptionist bluntly replied. "Before leaving, he asked every scout, no matter the guild, to fill out this form and submit it back here.

He’d go through the list and contact the guilds later if he thinks the application is worth it."

The scouters were left puzzled. They were used to handing out forms to those who wanted to join them and take interviews, but it seemed Adrian wanted to take their interviews instead.

As humiliating as the situation was for the guilds, they had to swallow their pride, as Adrian was a fish any fisherman would want at all costs. But some were insistent, like Michaela from the Misty Swords Guild.

"Would you mind sharing-"

"I’m sorry, but I don’t have any further information," the receptionist said, cutting her off and pointing at the form.

Some wanted to know why the DRA acted like a middleman and gatekeeping Adrian’s information. After all, they usually offer the hunters a contract, just like the other guilds, and then move on.

But this time, they were going out of their way to help Adrian, and the guilds wanted to know why. However, the receptionist was slick, brushing off the question each time the scouts asked, no matter how persistent they were.

"You’ve got an hour to submit those forms. Better hurry before you run out of time," the receptionist gave them an ultimatum. "Have a great day ahead!"

A few hours later, at Fenrir’s Villa...

James had dropped off the forms Adrian had requested, and now it was time to go through the hundreds of forms that had been submitted. The girls and George were also helping.

"I won’t recommend joining the Misty Swords," George commented, rolling up their application and throwing it alongside other rejected applications.

"Why? I thought you’d recommend them since they are your clients," Adrian replied, his eyes focused on the report in hand.

"Not anymore," George clicked his tongue. "They wanted me to do some shady shit for them, so I handed their case to my partner."

"Shady things?"

"Yeah, silencing the media, forcing the DRA, etc etc..." George sighed and got up to pour himself a drink. "The gist is that they don’t want it to be known they were behind Shinon’s ’misfortune’."

"Still, you could have made a lot of money that way-"

"Let me make one thing clear. You’re the only person I do shady things for. Not every random person who walks into my office. Well, I can’t complain since you pay me handsomely~"

The girls laughed at their bromance, but Adrian noticed Sophia wasn’t being her usual self. He had seen it but chalked it to their arrival on Earth. However, she sometimes seemed a bit too distant, and Adrian wondered why.

He gently nudged her with his elbow, gesturing her to follow him. Everyone noticed their interaction but turned a blind eye to it. After all, it wasn’t their place to intervene.

Sophia stood on the balcony as the calm winds played with her hair. She held onto the railing, lost in her thoughts when Adrian appeared with drinks in hand.

"Here you go," he said softly, offering her a drink. "Now, tell me what’s wrong."

"What’s wrong? Nothing-" Sophia replied, acting her best.

"I might not remember the guy you fell in love with, but I’m still Adrian," he replied. "I know something is happening inside your head. So tell me so that I can help you. Not as your lover, but as a friend."

"You’re so annoying, you know that?" Sophia turned to face him, a wan smile on her lips as she accepted the drink. "It feels strangely warm when you see right through me."

Adrian leaned against the balcony, studying her face, but said nothing. Sophia knew he wouldn’t stop till she told him, so that’s what he did.

"It’s about my family," Sophia sighed, her gaze drifting to the moon above. "you knew about it before, but... since you lost your memories, I guess I’ll have to tell you again."

"Tell me what?"

Sophia took a deep breath, steeling herself for what she was about to reveal.

"My family... they’re part of the high society in France," she began slowly. "Somehow, they learned of my return to Earth, and... now they’re urging me to go back and... carry on with my engagement."

Adrian’s eyes widened in surprise, and he nearly choked on his drink. "You’re engaged? Since when?"

"All this while," Sophia looked down, her fingers tracing patterns on the railing. "I’ve been engaged to a man of my parent’s choice. But... I only learned about it a day before we were summoned to Nexaria.

Even then, I didn’t want to, but things happened before I could talk to them and now... I’m in this mess."

Adrian’s confusion turned to concern as he reached to touch her arm. "So they were forcing a marriage on you? Wait... it’s been six years since we disappeared, and that guy is still single?"

"He wasn’t for a while... but he is now. At least according to them," she replied. "Funny, how I was at peace when they thought I died or something."

"Wait a minute, they thought you were dead, but now that you’re back, they want you to go through with the engagement to someone who already got married once? You know, cancels out your previous engagement, right?"

Adrian let out an exaggerated sigh, trying to lighten up the situation. "You know what? I bet George knows some slick French lawyers.

We can shut them up. And if that doesn’t work, we’ll just tell them we’re already married—Sorry, I just—"

"No, it’s fine..." Sophia murmured, fidgeting with her hands. "It isn’t like we never planned for it. But, let’s just live in the moment for now..."

Adrian wasn’t pleased with the outcome but nodded. Even though he felt strange inside, he knew it was Sophia’s choice to make, not his.
