Chimaera's Conquest: The Legend Of The Devourer -
Chapter 161: Accidental Saintess
Chapter 161: Accidental Saintess
"...nothing you do surprises me anymore," Amelia whispered, staring at the ’haul’ Adrian had brought with him.
Adrian had just returned from his little escapade and brought several treasures with him. But no treasure was as important as the map he brought with him.
Sophia was analysing the map and realised all the plans they had made would have either gotten them captured or, worse, killed. The new security was impeccable with its hidden traps and vigilant guards.
So much so that even if all the heroes that Tulkas had caught were still alive and attacked the Church together, only a few of them would make it to the end.
"How did you get your hands on this?" Sophia asked Adrian, not lifting her gaze.
"I have my ways," Adrian curtly replied.
Even though he tried to make it seem that Bellion’s words did not affect him, Adrian was doubting his every interaction with everyone. Only A’Mila was not on his radar, as he hadn’t known her before his death.
He hated to think about it, but the remark about the contractor who issued his death notice was someone close to him, someone he wouldn’t ever doubt.
Thanks to his stupid nature, there were quite a few people he thought were close to him. Vesper was one of them as well. The thought that he doubted her made him sick.
Vesper had been nothing but helpful to him. She even sacrificed herself to ensure his safety, so there was no way she would even think about getting him assassinated.
’I need to clear my head,’ Adrian took a deep breath. ’I can’t lead the rescue with all these thoughts in my head.’
Meanwhile, A’Mila was busy trying out the weapons and gear Adrian had borrowed from the Ravens. She didn’t say anything, but judging from the smile on her face, she was more than pleased with them.
"We got the map, but how do we get through all this?" Amelia mumbled, pointing out the countless checkpoints around the Church. "No matter which way we take, we must cross at least a dozen checkpoints to reach the bell tower."
"I already got that figured out," Adrian smiled and threw three freshly prepared Raven Guild cards next to the map.
Amelia looked at the cards and then back at Adrian, dumbfounded, while Sophia smiled and shook her head. They were getting worried for no reason at all. As usual, their beloved strategist had figured it all out, but something wasn’t right.
"Only three IDs?" Sophia commented, looking at Adrian. "You know we are four, then-"
"Because I won’t be joining you guys," Adrian replied, sharpening his blade.
"What?" Amelia and Sophia yelled simultaneously.
"Don’t what me," Adrian looked at the two. "You both know how cunning those bastards are. Even with the IDs and all the preparation we do, it won’t be enough to outsmart them. So, someone has to distract them, and that’s going to be me."
"Adrian, I get what you’re saying, but if someone’s gonna be bait, it should be one of us," Amelia said. "Sophia and I are in the worst shape we have ever been in... Oh, I see what you’re getting at now."
Sophia understood Adrian’s reasoning as well. Given their condition, they wouldn’t last long enough for the entire Church and the Ravens to mobilise against them.
Besides, Shu and Vincent would have already informed them about Adrian and his fight with Ahuli, who was stronger than most heroes. So his appearance would get them on high alert.
But those weren’t the only reasons Adrian would be the best bait for them. The Church wanted him dead, and they did it. But he returned, and for all they knew, he was thirsty for revenge.
The moment he strikes the Church, all hell would break loose, and that would be the perfect moment for the girls to slip in and get out with Vesper. Once they were out, Adrian would figure out a way to escape.
"And that’s why I have to be the bait, got it?" Adrian asked, explaining his reasons.
The girls nodded. While they understood his reasons, they still hoped there would be some other way to approach the situation. But given they were short on time, there wasn’t much room for changes.
Within the next hour, the group had their plans ready. But as they were wrapping up, there was a knock on the door.
Adrian looked around the room, speaking through his eyes. The girls knew it was trouble and picked up a weapon each, ready to strike.
"Who is it?" A’Mila asked upon Adrian’s instruction.
"Room service!" the voice announced from behind the door.
At that point, Adrian knew it was an uninvited guest. After all, he had explicitly instructed the Innkeeper that no one was to disturb them in any case. As such, it was unlikely he had sent someone up there.
Amelia cautiously reached the door on Adrian’s signal while Sophia, A’Mila, and Adrian positioned themselves for an attack, ready to strike whoever was behind it.
But all their plans were useless, as before they could react, the figure rushed past Amelia, catching Sophia off guard and knocking her to the ground.
"What the-"
The Assailant’s agility surprised Amelia, and she rushed to Sophia’s aid. The following moment, she was busy exchanging blows with the woman who appeared to be dressed as a barmaid.
But despite her best efforts, Amelia was caught off guard and struck in the back of the head, collapsing to the ground unconscious next to Sophia.
Watching things slip out of the hands, Adrian sprang into action next. He launched himself at the woman, wanting to subdue her as he hoped to interrogate the intruder later.
But the woman fought dirty and attempted to strike him between the legs. Thanks to his quick reflexes and a timely intervention from Fenris, Adrian was spared from the blow.
However, the woman got caught lacking as Fenris bit onto the woman’s skirt and threw off her balance. Taking advantage of the situation, A’Mila tried restraining the woman, but she turned out to be quite flexible and slipped between her legs before lunging at Adrian.
Adrian raised his sword and was about to swing it in full force when he noticed the woman’s face and hesitated. The next moment, he was pinned to the ground, with the woman sitting on top.
"It’s been a while, Adrian..." the woman smiled, watching Adrian shake his head in disbelief.
"I won’t exactly call this a greeting," Adrian smiled back. "Seraphina."
