Chapter 141: Another Battle (3)
"You were right," Akila announced, entering Adrian’s room. "Having them followed paid off. What’s going on here?"
Adrian sighed, rolling his eyes as A’Mila kept shoving more fruits his way. Adrian had insisted he wasn’t helpless, but A’Mila was already force-feeding him by then.
"Don’t mind me and continue," A’Mila shrugged. "Even I would like to know what the scouts found."
"They were the ones who helped that Vincent guy escape," Akila mumbled, picking off a berry from Adrian’s plate and promptly receiving a smack as payment. "Ouch! What was that for?"
"I thought there was a fly on it," A’Mila replied with a smile. "But I guess I was wrong."
Watching their interaction, Adrian couldn’t help but smile. He wondered how his life would have turned out if his step-family had been on friendly terms with him instead of how they were.
’What’s the point in remembering them,’ Adrian thought. ’It’s not like we would ever see each other again.’
Pushing aside his thoughts, he decided to focus on the present, especially on the elves.
"They helped him escape; I already knew that. What else did your people find out?" he asked.
"They are heading back to Nexaria," Akila continued. "They want to stop there for a while before-"
"Heading to Alfvania. A wise choice," Adrian replied, his chin resting on his hand. "They know no one in their right mind would ever attack them there, not even the Nexarians.
He continued, "They would probably head to the church first to nullify Vincent’s hero contract; otherwise, he won’t be able to enter Alfvania."
"Why is that?" Akila asked.
Adrian proceeded to tell them about the hero contract. Essentially, it was an initiation ceremony for the heroes to gain their powers.
Still, it also came with restrictions that were valid until they fulfilled their mission: to conquer the Nether, nullify the contract, and, finally, by death.
It was the Church’s way of ensuring the heroes wouldn’t join other factions without their knowledge or permission. As cruel as the terms in the contract were, Adrian understood the importance of said rules and terms.
"Each of us is like a weapon," Adrian continued. "any commander, in this case the Church, would force measures to keep weapons in control."
"So, are you bound by those terms as well?" A’Mila inquired and was relieved when Adrian shook his head.
"I already died once. The contract became invalid with my last breath," Adrian replied.
He didn’t realise the siblings weren’t aware of his tale of genesis, and by the time he did, it was already too late.
"What do you mean you died once?" Akila eventually broke the silence, and Adrian finally told them about the incident with the Ravens and his resurrection.
Adrian didn’t tell them everything about him, but he told them enough so they wouldn’t question him again.
What followed the revelation was another bout of absolute silence. Neither of the siblings knew what to say, and A’Mila just wrapped her hands around Adrian, silently embracing him.
She knew he must have been through a lot to turn out as he had, but never in her wildest dreams could she imagine the extent of Adrian’s misery.
Trying to lighten up the mood, Akila returned to the topic of the elves.
"So what do we do about the elves? We can’t let them escape after what they did."
"He’s right, Adrian. We’ve got to make sure they don’t leave the Wilderness," A’Mila insisted. "If they get away, we’ll never catch them-"
"Who says that?" Adrian interrupted as he smiled. "Let them escape the Wilderness."
"What?"
"Hear me out first. They would need to approach one of the Nexarian outposts to leave the Wilderness, which would work in our favour."
The siblings were puzzled for a moment until they realised what Adrian meant. A’Mila had explained to him earlier that the tribe couldn’t start a war with the Church because they didn’t know how to get to Nexaria. After all, only the Nexarians knew how to navigate the Veil.
The Banurs and the Church weren’t getting along, so they didn’t have any idea where to find an outpost they could take over and force their way into Nexaria. But the elves seemed to know of an outpost and were headed that way.
All they needed to do was follow them, let them pass, and take down the outpost so no one would suspect anything. Before anyone could say a peep, they would be in Nexaria.
"You’ve thought long about it, haven’t you?" Akila smiled as Adrian was done telling them his plan.
"Not really," Adrian shrugged. "I came up with right now. It wasn’t a big deal. The elves only made the task easier, or we’d have to scan the entire Wilderness ourselves."
Adrian didn’t tell them, but he had plenty of other reasons to head to Nexaria. The most important one was to rescue Vesper. Following his altercation with Red, Adrian had a hunch the Church wanted her alive.
Even though it was a hunch, he was prepared to risk it all. It was something the old him would’ve never done, but the old him had died long ago and with him, his cautious nature.
"An analyst indeed," A’Mila smirked, nodding her head. "So when do we leave?"
"Once we’re ready," Adrian answered, then looked at Akila. "Until then, make sure your people keep tabs on the elves. Knowing the outpost’s location is crucial for the plan to work."
"Consider it done," Akila said, leaving them.
Once he was gone, A’Mila returned to the conversation she had had with Adrian before—involving Sophia and Amelia.
"You know you’ll have to face them someday," she said. "Besides, they have been asking for you since they woke up a couple of hours ago."
"I know... but I just can’t, not after what I did to them-"
Adrian was interrupted as A’Mila cupped his cheeks, "You didn’t do anything. No one is blaming you for what happened, and I know those girls wouldn’t either. So stop being a coward and face them."
"You’re right... they deserve that at the least."
