Chapter 114: Queen Of Spiders (1)
Ignoring Marcus’s personal loss, the group had evaded a disaster only to encounter another problem. Their caravan was destroyed, making it difficult for the heroes to travel as a group.
Moreover, they were stranded in the forest. Sula had the map, but proceeding on foot after sunset would be suicidal. Ultimately, they agreed to camp for the night and figure things out in the morning.
The Heroes were not pleased with the decision, but they weren’t stubborn to argue otherwise. Having been on countless expeditions before, they were well acquainted with the dangers of the night and had no desire to provoke the forest dwellers.
"Good, we already have some food," Sula said, pointing towards the boar carcass. "We can use the broken cart as fuel wood to cook the meat and provide us some light."
"There’s a small stream nearby, and we can get the water from there," Taheton chimed in. "But we’d need to boil it first. Can’t trust what the monsters have been doing with the water."
"Hm... I agree," Vincent replied, scratching his chin. "Does anyone know how to prepare the boar? Its fur is hard as steel, so cooking it without prepping the meat first would be impossible."
One after another, the heroes shook their heads. Adrian was the one who did all the butchering and other things in their group. Whenever he was left behind, the heroes would take rations with themselves.
But since they hadn’t expected to go on an expedition in the wilderness, they had no food on them. What little they had had already been consumed by them as the tribe took care of their needs during their stay in the settlement.
"Do any of you...?" Vincent looked at the tribals, who shook their heads as well.
It was a plain lie. The Tulkas were taught ways to survive in the cruel forest from a young age. Preparing meat to cook was a child’s play for them. But Sula and Taheton refused because they saw an opportunity to weaken the heroes even more.
If the heroes had no food to eat, they’d have to go for raw boar meat, which would surely get them sick. After all, they didn’t have the same immunity as the tribals, so eating the meat could weaken them, making it easier for the tribe to enslave them.
"I guess it can’t be helped then," Sophia sighed, raising her hand towards the dead boar. "I’ll roast it as it is-"
Just then, Adrian’s hand shot up.
"Something you want to say?" Sophia asked, raising an eyebrow.
Adrian nodded before making a slicing motion with his hands and pointing at the boar.
"I guess he wants to prepare the boar," Vincent remarked with relief. "Thanks for your help!"
Consuming the creature’s raw flesh would have caused them some trouble. But thankfully, the other guy was willing to help them.
’I might be helping you morons,’ Adrian thought while peeking towards the Sula and Taheton from the corner of his eyes. ’But they don’t look pleased with it.’
While Sula and Taheton went to fetch water from the stream along with Vincent, the rest of them got busy with their own work.
Adrian worked on the boar while Clara and Marcus scavenged wood from the cart. Meanwhile, Sophia and Amelia were on guard duty.
Everything was going peacefully until Taheton returned with the water. By then, Sophia was starting a fore using her magic and laid her stick down on the grass.
Taheton didn’t see the staff and tripped over, spilling water all over the firewood and Clara, who was sitting beside Sophia.
"What the hell!?" Clara yelled as she stood up. "What’s wrong with you?"
"That’s what I’m supposed to ask!" Taheton fired back. "Why’d you trip me?"
"Trip you? I’m all the way over here! How am I supposed to trip you?"
"Oh, so I fell on my own, that’s what you’re saying?" Taheton snarled, taking a step towards Clara.
Seeing the situation escalate, everyone rushed to calm them. But it was already too late. Clara didn’t appreciate being bossed around by strangers, and the situation already had everyone on edge.
In that instant, the situation was like a barrel of explosives, ready to burst, and it did burst.
"How should I know why you fell, you monkey-ass bitch!"
"You should watch your tone-" Taheton threateningly took a step towards Clara, only for Sophia to step in between.
"I apologise on her behalf," Sophia interjected. "It’s my fault you fell over, but she shouldn’t have said what she did-"
"Oh, you want to make up for it?" Taheton asked with a twisted smile on his face.
It had been a while since the outsider slaves had been locked up. As such, Taheton hadn’t enjoyed their company for a while. In his twisted mind, he thought making them ’beg’ for his forgiveness would be alright.
"...I do," Sophia mumbled softly.
"Then come with me-" Taheton said, but before he could continue, Adrian intervened. "What do you want now?"
Adrian glanced at Sophia before shaking his head. But Taheton didn’t stop and pushed him aside.
"You want her? Too bad I set my eyes on her first. Go get someone else for yourself," Taheton scoffed, talking in their tribe’s language.
"Stop it," Adrian snarled back in a heavy and made-up voice.
"You goody two shoes... Milka, you might get to have your way in the settlement, but no one’s here to baby you. So shut up and get back before I do something we both would regret."
Adrian didn’t move and smiled at him, "You think you can even touch me?"
Taheton was so enraged he didn’t even realise that Adrian had just spoken. Instead, he took out his hammer and pointed it at him.
"Or else?" Taheton smirked, not realising his mistake.
When Fenris saw Taheton pointing the hammer at her master, she dropped the bone she was chewing and leapt at him, knocking him down while viciously growling at him.
Taheton’s wolf didn’t keep quiet either. He rushed to his master’s rescue, but Fenris quickly took care of him with a tail whip.
Adrian had never seen his partner Fenris act so aggressively, but he felt reassured knowing that Fenris had his back.
Unfortunately, it was not the time to fight amongst themselves, especially when they were about to enter the cave. Reluctantly, Adrian intervened, pulling Fenris away from the man and giving him a final warning.
"I may have stopped her this time. But the next time you try this shit, I’ll serve you and your pet to her for lunch and dinner," Adrian whispered into Taheton’s ears before walking away as if nothing had happened.
However, Taheton didn’t think of it like that. Milka humiliated him, and he would have his revenge, consequences be damned.
