Chapter 91: A Mysterious Call!
Susan’s POV
"Susan," Angel called from behind, her voice carrying an odd mix of excitement and curiosity as she handed me her cell phone. "Look at this picture. Miss Gloria sent it to me!"
"What is it?" I asked as irritation was laced in my tone and I turned toward her. My patience was already wearing thin. I had been calling Gloria relentlessly, desperate to ask her about her plans and how she intended to deal with Claire. But instead of answering, she ignored me completely, hung up on my calls, and even had the audacity to block me. And now she was contacting Angel?
Seriously?
Angel seemed oblivious to my growing frustration as she pointed at the screen. "It’s a picture of Mr. Kensington and some woman at his mansion," she said, her tone dripping with curiosity. "I have never seen him with anyone before! How come there is a woman with him—at his mansion of all places?"
I snatched the phone from her hand, my heart pounding as I stared at the image. There he was... Mr. Kensington in question, being all lovey-dovey toward Claire.
"Fuck!" I cursed under my breath, anger flaring up like a fire I had been trying to keep under control for so long. My chest tightened as I clenched the phone. Why? Why the hell was she sending these pictures to me? What was Gloria trying to accomplish by rubbing salt into an open wound?
What does she even want from me?
My hands trembled slightly as I exhaled sharply, trying to calm the storm raging inside me. Angel stood beside me, her eyes darting between me and her phone, clearly unsure if she should say anything.
I shoved the phone back into her hand. "Call Gloria," I snapped, my voice cold and demanding.
Angel blinked, startled by the sudden shift in my tone. "But—she—"
"Just do it!" I cut her off, pacing the room as I tried to steady my thoughts. Gloria needed to explain herself. She had ignored my calls, blocked my number, and now she was pulling this? Was this her way of taunting me? Testing my patience?
Angel hesitated before finally tapping her phone to dial. The sound of ringing filled the silence, but my mind was already running wild. Why was Claire back in his life? Hadn’t I done enough to ensure she stayed out of the picture? Was that article really not enough!?
The ringing stopped, and Angel glanced up nervously. "She is not picking up," she said softly, almost as if afraid of how I would react.
Of course she wasn’t.
I let out a bitter laugh, running a hand through my hair. "She thinks she can keep playing games with me?" I muttered under my breath. "Fine. If she won’t come to me, I will make her talk. One way or another."
Angel shifted uncomfortably, but I didn’t care. This wasn’t over. Gloria and her little schemes would unravel soon enough if she kept doing this to me!
If Gloria thought she could use me to get rid of Claire in the past and pull the same stunt this time, she was sorely mistaken. I wouldn’t let her manipulate me again.
I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms as I paced back and forth. Gloria always fancied herself the master strategist, but she had underestimated me once too often. I had played along before, letting her take the lead because I thought she was a better player—or maybe because staying in the shadows and reaping the benefits had seemed smarter at the time.
But things were different now.
Evander was keeping me at arm’s length, barely giving me a chance, and Gloria? She was treating me like I didn’t even exist. Like I was nothing but air.
Fine.
If that’s how they wanted to play it, I would make my own moves. I didn’t need Gloria’s half-baked schemes or Evander’s distant approval. I had my own cards to play, and I would make sure they both realized that soon enough.
A small and bitter smile crept onto my lips as I imagined the look on Gloria’s face when she realized I wasn’t her pawn anymore. No, this time I would be the one pulling the strings.
I turned to Angel, who was still clutching her phone, wide-eyed and unsure. "Let me know if Gloria contacts you again," I said sharply, my voice cold and commanding.
Angel nodded quickly, not daring to ask any questions.
I straightened my posture, exhaling deeply to calm the fire burning within me. I would show them all that I wasn’t someone to be ignored or underestimated.
Let the game begin.
I was still lost in my thoughts as the storm of anger swirled within me, when the sudden ringing of Angel’s cell phone snapped me back to reality. My eyes darted to the phone in her hand, my heart skipping a beat with anticipation. Could it be Gloria?
Angel glanced at the screen, her brows furrowing slightly. "It’s an unknown number," she said hesitantly before answering.
"Hello?" Her voice was cautious as she greeted the caller. A brief silence followed before her expression shifted as a mix of confusion and unease flashed across her face. She glanced at me, her eyes uncertain, as if the words she had just heard had caught her off guard.
"What is it?" I asked impatiently, narrowing my brows.
Angel hesitated for a moment before lowering the phone and extending it toward me. "The person on the other end wants to talk to you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
I stared at her, my mind racing with possibilities. Who could it be? And why did they want to speak with me directly? My gut churned with suspicion, but curiosity won in the race of the two.
Taking the phone from her, I pressed it to my ear, my tone sharp and guarded. "Who is this?" I demanded as I had no patience left.
The voice on the other end spoke low and calculated, sending a shiver down my spine. I didn’t recognize it immediately, but soon... I recognised it!
"Let’s just say I am someone you ruined a few years ago," the voice said smoothly as a hint of disgust was laced in their words.
I tightened my grip on the phone, my pulse quickening. "So, this is you," I muttered, barely able to control the smile that crept up on my lips. My heart pounded in my chest as I tried to maintain my composure. "To what pleasure do I owe you, contacting me after so long?"
The person on the other end didn’t seem impressed by my tone. "Stop with your act and tell me..." they snapped, their voice growing colder. "I heard Evander is married now!?"
"Really?" I scoffed as I rolled my eyes. "And even if he is, so what?" I shot back, my voice laced with bitterness.
The person let out a small, knowing laugh. "Well... I know that person is not you, for starters," they said, each word dripping with disdain.
I froze, my breath catching in my throat.
