Chapter 85: Congratulation, You Have Got My Attention!

Claire’s POV

After breakfast, I stood up, ready to leave, but Evander wasn’t going to make it that easy.

"I would like to talk to you," Evander said, his voice firm as he stepped in front of me, stopping me in my tracks.

I turned to face him, my glare sharp. "Mr. Kensington, as I have made very clear, I don’t want to see you, let alone talk to you. So, I suggest you stay out of my way and stop spying on me. Whom I meet and what I do is none of your business!"

Evander sighed deeply, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I understand you are angry, Claire. But don’t forget— you were the one who gave me three months to win you back. Since I am doing exactly that, I have every right to take care of you during this time."

I froze for a moment, caught off guard by his audacity. His words were firm but not without a trace of emotion, as if he truly believed what he was saying.

"You call this taking care of me?" I snapped, crossing my arms. "Forcing me into coming here and then with these conversations and watching my every move? That’s not care, Evander. That’s control."

He flinched slightly but recovered quickly, his expression unreadable. "I am not trying to control you," he said, his tone softer now. "I just... I want to protect you. Can’t you see that?"

I laughed bitterly, shaking my head. "Protect me? From what? The only thing I need protecting from is you, Evander. You have already done enough damage."

His jaw tightened, his hands clenching at his sides. "You are right. I have made mistakes, and I don’t expect you to forgive me overnight. But I won’t give up, Claire."

The sincerity in his voice sent a pang through my chest, but I shoved it aside. I wouldn’t let myself be swayed by his words, not after everything he’d put me through.

"Do what you want," I said coldly, stepping around him. "But don’t expect me to make it easy for you. You have already lost me, Evander."

I turned on my heels to leave, but before leaving, I felt a pang in my heart as I wanted to see Eliam one last time. Who knows when will I see him again!

Evander had sent Eliam off with his nanny, using the excuse that I was injured and needed rest. That bastard had lied to my child, and Eliam, with his innocent trust, believed him. He had obediently gone along with the nanny, leaving me behind with Evander.

"I would like to see Eliam before I leave," I said firmly, my tone making it clear this wasn’t a request but rather a demand.

Evander raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Why would you want to see him?" he asked, his voice calm but laced with something unsettling. "Well... go ahead. But remember, it will be the last time you will see him!"

His words struck me like a bolt of lightning, freezing me in place.

"Excuse me!?" I snapped, spinning around to face him. My heart pounded painfully in my chest. "What do you mean by that, Evander?"

He said nothing. His silence challenged me, and it made my blood boil.

I stormed up to him, clutching the collar of his shirt tightly. My anger spilled over. It was raw and uncontrollable. "My child is already gone, and you... you were part of the reason why! Do you have any idea what I went through? And now, when I am trying to pull myself out of this endless grief, you want to take that away from me too?" My voice cracked, and tears blurred my vision, but I didn’t let go of his collar.

His face darkened, but I didn’t care. The words I had kept bottled up for so long were pouring out now, and I couldn’t stop them.

"You think you can control everything, don’t you?" I continued, my voice trembling with emotion. "But Eliam is my child, Evander! He called me mother! You don’t get to use him as a pawn to keep me around."

For a moment, something flickered in his eyes. But I couldn’t bring myself to care. My own pain was too overwhelming, too suffocating.

"I will see him," I said, my voice lower but no less firm. "And if you think you can stop me, you are wrong. You have taken enough from me already."

I let go of his collar and stepped back, my breathing ragged as I tried to compose myself. My hands shook, but I clenched them into fists to steady myself.

Evander’s lips parted as if he wanted to say something, but no words came. For once, he looked at me not with his usual cold arrogance but with something softer.

But I didn’t wait for him to respond. I turned to walk away, determined to leave this conversation behind. Yet, just as I thought I’d escaped, Evander’s voice stopped me in my tracks again.

"It’s not just your last time—it’s mine too!" he said, his tone sharp and almost sad. His footsteps were heavy as he closed the distance between us, stopping right in front of me.

I froze, his words sending a chill through me. His expression was unreadable, but there was something in his eyes that gave me pause—anger, frustration, and maybe even... pain.

"Do you think I want to lose my son!?" he said, his voice trembling slightly, though he tried to mask it.

My breath hitched as I stared at him, shocked by the raw emotion in his words. For a moment, I wondered if he was being sincere, or was this his new way to control me? Since I was not letting him win!

"Is this your new propaganda to control me, Evander?" I asked, my voice dripping with disbelief. I crossed my arms tightly over my chest in disgust. "If it is, then congratulations— you have got my attention!" I gritted my teeth, my gaze locked on his.

Evander’s jaw tightened, and he ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "You think this is about control? Claire, I am not trying to manipulate you here!"

I let out a bitter laugh; the sound of laughter was harsh even to my own ears. "Really? Because that’s all you have ever done. You have lied, you have taken from me, and now you expect me to believe you care about losing Eliam? After everything you have put me through?"

His shoulders slumped slightly, and for the first time, he looked... vulnerable. "I know I have made mistakes," he admitted, his voice quieter now. "But I am not lying to you, Claire. I love my son. And whether you believe me or not, I care about you too."

His words hung in the air between us, heavy and suffocating. I wanted to scream at him, to push him away, but a part of me—the part that still remembered the man I had once fallen in love with—hesitated.
