Chapter 74: I Missed You!
Claire’s POV
Sissy picked up the call, her face still tight with anger. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She gripped the phone tightly as if it might escape.
"Who is this!?" She snapped, her voice sharp and demanding.
At first, she seemed angry, but her expression quickly darkened. The anger turned more intense, like pure rage. Her hands started trembling, and I could see her trying to hold herself together.
"Sissy, what’s wrong?" I asked softly, my voice barely above a whisper. Fear crept into my chest as I watched her. "Who is on the call?"
She didn’t respond right away. Instead, she tightened her jaw and yelled into the phone, her voice cracking slightly.
"Who the hell do you think you are? Do you think we are that easy to mess with?" Her words were sharp, but her eyes glistened with unshed tears.
She turned slightly away from me as if trying to hide the emotion on her face. Her tone dropped, trembling with suppressed anger. "Haven’t you given her enough trouble? And now you—"
She cut herself off, her voice breaking. For a second, I thought she might throw the phone, but instead, she shoved it toward me.
"Here," she said, her voice tight. "Talk to him."
"What?" I stammered, staring at her in confusion. My mind raced, trying to figure out what was happening. Who was on the other end of that call, and why was Sissy reacting this way?
I hesitated, my fingers brushing against the phone. Sissy’s face was pale now, her fury replaced with an expression I couldn’t quite place—fear? Pain?
Seeing her like this made my own anxiety spike. I had already forgotten about Gloria. My hands shook as I slowly took the phone from her.
"Hello?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.
The other end of the line was silent for a while, as no one came out first. My chest tightened as I waited for the person to talk.
And then came a voice—a voice that made my blood run cold in an instant.
"Claire! Why is your cell phone off!?" Evander’s deep voice demanded. He sounded annoyed, his tone sharp. "And why does Sissy think you two are easy?"
His words struck a nerve. The anger that had been simmering inside me surged, overtaking the fear. My grip tightened on the phone as I spoke, as my voice was cold and full of disgust.
"Why were you calling me, Evander?" I spat. My tone was sharp and filled with the anger I had held back for far too long.
My mind raced as I spoke. How dare he call me? How dare he still think he could act like this after everything he had done? His face, his words, his actions—they were haunting me. And on top of that, his mother’s constant torment hadn’t stopped.
"I missed you," he said suddenly as his voice was soft and calm.
But I knew better. I could hear the emptiness behind his words. I could imagine his cold, expressionless face as he said them. It wasn’t the kind of "missing" that came from love or care. It was something else entirely selfish.
"Really!?" I snapped, my voice rising with every word. "Then keep missing me, Evander. And while you’re at it, tell your mother to stop tormenting me! I don’t want to see her, and I sure as hell don’t want to talk to her!"
My teeth clenched as I tried to control my shaking hands. The anger and pain were too much. Memories of everything he and his family had put me through came flooding back.
"What did you say?" he asked quickly, his voice shifting. "Did you talk to her? Did she try meeting you? What happened? Can you just tell me what’s wrong?"
The flood of questions only made me angrier. How could he not know? How could he act so oblivious to what his mother was doing?
I didn’t answer his questions. Instead, I took a deep breath, steadied my voice, and delivered the words I’d been too afraid to say before.
"Mr. Kensington," I began, emphasizing his name as if to put distance between us as I had always done since I returned. "Can you please stop bothering me and let me live in peace? I have had enough of this."
There was a pause on the other end of the line, but I didn’t let him speak.
"Let’s stop seeing each other," I said firmly, my voice final.
And with that, I ended the call, my hands trembling as I handed the phone back to Sissy.
She looked at me, her expression softening as if she understood the weight of what I’d just done. I couldn’t say anything. My throat was tight, and my chest felt like it might burst.
But for the first time in a long time, I felt a small sliver of relief.
"Do you think he would stop just because you asked him to!?" Sissy asked, her voice laced with frustration as she sat beside me and wrapped her arms around me in a comforting hug.
I sighed, leaning into her embrace. "What are you trying to imply?" I raised my brows as I hugged her back.
She pulled back slightly to meet my gaze. "I am saying he cares, and it’s obvious. The way his voice trembled when he said your name—it was like his entire world depended on your response. Don’t tell me you didn’t notice it."
My lips pressed into a thin line as her words sank in. I had noticed. I just didn’t want to admit it. "Thanks to you, I’m feeling better," I said, brushing off her statement. Yet, even as I spoke, I couldn’t deny the truth in her words.
Strangely, I felt calmer and more at ease after talking to Evander. His voice strangely had a power of calming my chaotic heart, soothing the fears I hadn’t even realized were gripping me.
Though I might have told him not to see me again, just hearing him had been enough to quiet the storm. It wasn’t fear that lingered now, but something far more confusing.
Sissy tilted her head, studying me like she could see right through the mask I was trying to wear. "You’re thinking about him, aren’t you?"
I opened my mouth to deny it, but the words wouldn’t come. Instead, I sighed, pulling my knees to my chest. "Maybe," I admitted softly, the word barely above a whisper.
She smiled faintly, patting my arm. "It’s okay to feel, you know. You don’t have to figure it all out right now."
As her words came out of her mouth, I realized she was right. I didn’t have to untangle the mess of emotions in my chest tonight. For now, it was enough that the fear was gone, replaced by something warmer.
"Claire, I suddenly have a bold idea!" Sissy said, taking me out of my thought.
"What is it!?" I raised my brows and asked.
"Why don’t you seduce Evnader!?"
