Chapter 62: Sir, May I Start?
Evander’s POV
I waited for Claire’s reaction as the room went quiet for a split second, and I could see a few surprised glances exchanged between the director, producer, and Damian.
And soon, I got Claire’s response. She paused briefly on stage, her back to me, but I caught the subtle way her shoulders stiffened. Was that a reaction? Did she understand what I was trying to say?
I held my breath, waiting for her to turn around, but she didn’t. Instead, she moved toward the center of the stage, composed as ever, ready for her audition.
I leaned back in my seat, trying to mask the storm brewing inside me. I had no idea if my little stunt worked, but one thing was certain— I wasn’t going to let her slip away from me again.
"Mr. Kensington! You really do know how to joke around!" the producer said with an ugly grin plastered across his face. His tone was obnoxious, and I wanted nothing more than to punch him right then and there and break his jaw so that he would never grin like that again.
"It’s alright! We understand," he continued, oblivious to the murderous thoughts running through my head. "But are you implying that you and Miss Susan are already married?"
I opened my mouth to shut him down, my patience wearing dangerously thin, but before I could speak, Claire’s sweet voice rang out from the stage.
"Sir, may I start?" She asked, her tone soft yet polite.
My chest tightened as her words washed over me. It had been just a day since I had last seen her, but hearing her voice again made me want to run up there, hug her tightly, and tell her how much I had missed her.
But I couldn’t. I stayed rooted in my seat, holding myself together, though my thoughts were anything but calm.
The director’s cold, harsh voice broke the moment. "Are you stupid or what? Can’t you see we are talking? And yet you had the audacity to not only enter but interrupt us?"
The sudden shift in tone made me bristle with anger.
"I... I didn’t mean to," Claire replied, her voice shaky, and I could see the nervousness flicker across her face. She looked so small, so vulnerable, and it sent a surge of rage through me.
Before I even realized it, I was on my feet.
"Mr. Director and Mr. Producer," I snapped as my voice was cold and unknowingly dangerous "You were the ones prying into someone else’s private life instead of focusing on your work! I don’t know if I should even consider investing in your project when I see no professionalism from you!"
The room fell into stunned silence as all eyes were on me, but I wasn’t finished.
"You are wasting the contestants’ time," I continued, my voice colder now. "If you are not here to do your job, then give them all a break and call them back when you are done with your nonsense!"
The director and producer were flustered by my words and exchanged glances, as they had clearly not expected my outburst.
While Damian smirked, looking amused by the chaos I had just unleashed, I ignored him. My attention was on Claire, who was still standing on stage, looking at me with wide eyes.
I sat back down, glaring at the director and producer one last time. "Now, if you don’t mind," I said coldly, "let the auditions proceed."
"Ahem!" Let’s proceed!"
Claire’s POV
As soon as I stepped into the audition room, I felt the heavy tension in the air. My nerves were already on edge, but then I saw him—Evander and I could hear what they were talking about.
I clenched my teeth and tried to stay calm as I looked at him. Our eyes met for a brief moment, and my heart raced despite all the rumors. His gaze was intense, almost like he was searching for something. I quickly looked away, trying to focus on the stage. I couldn’t let him distract me.
But his explanation about having a wife made my body stiff! Was he really trying to get me back in his life? However, I decided to not care about that.
I am certainly not waiting at your home, and... I am not your wife! I thought and stepped ahead.
I walked to the center of the stage and tried to stay calm, but I couldn’t bear the way they were talking about Susan and Evander being married! Although he had declared that he had an angry wife at home, they were still trying to match him with her.
I couldn’t bear it and asked if I could start, but before I knew it, the director’s sharp voice scolded me for interrupting. His tone was harsh, and it made me freeze. I felt small and nervous, unsure of what to do.
Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, Evander stood up. I didn’t expect what happened next. He defended me, calling out the director and producer for wasting everyone’s time and being unprofessional. His words were firm and commanding, silencing the entire room.
I couldn’t look at him, but I felt a mix of emotions—gratitude, confusion—as my heart raced frantically. The room went quiet after he finished, and I took a deep breath, trying to focus again.
The director seemed humiliated. His flushed face and tight jaw told me he wanted revenge, but I ignored him. Instead, I walked calmly to the corner of the stage and put my script there.
"What do you want to show us?" the director asked in a sharp tone.
"I will be showing you the scene where sick Jenny tries to bring the male and female leads together as they will help her when she is in need," I said confidently, keeping my voice steady.
