Chapter 59: The Article
Claire’s POV
I was sitting in the waiting area, holding my number tightly, waiting for my turn to audition. My heart was racing, but I pushed all my nerves aside and focused on the script in my hands. This was my moment, and I couldn’t let anything distract me.
However, silly Sissy was still going crazy over Damian Storme. She was practically bouncing in her seat, gushing about how dreamy he was. I rolled my eyes and decided to avoid her altogether. I needed all my attention on this.
"The script is amazing," I muttered under my breath, flipping through the pages again. "I just don’t understand why there are so many people here for such a small role!" The room was packed, and the low hum of chatter around me wasn’t helping my concentration.
I was deeply engrossed in the lines, trying to picture how I’d deliver each one, when I heard a familiar voice. My head snapped up, and I froze. It was her. Susan.
Why the hell was she here?
Wasn’t she supposed to be injured? I had seen her just yesterday, sprawled on the floor, barely able to stand straight. She looked so weak that I was sure it would take weeks for her to recover. But here she was, strutting into the room like nothing had happened.
I blinked, trying to process what I was seeing. Was she faking it yesterday? Or had some miracle happened overnight? Either way, seeing her here threw me off completely. I couldn’t help but feel a mix of shock and irritation bubbling inside me.
"Oh my God! Susan is here too!" someone exclaimed excitedly.
"I really like her!" Another chimed in, her voice filled with admiration.
The chatter around me grew louder as more people began talking about Susan. The more I tried to distance myself from these two people—Susan and Evander—the more fate seemed to throw them right into my path.
"Did you not hear? She is here to support Boss Damian!" A girl whispered in an exaggerated tone, as if she were sharing a juicy secret.
"Is that so? Is Damian her friend?" someone else asked with genuine curiosity.
"Seriously, girl? It’s like you know nothing!" A third person cut in with a scoff, clearly annoyed at the lack of knowledge.
I tried my best to stay out of the gossip, focusing harder on my script, but their voices kept creeping into my ears.
"Damian is the best and only friend of Mr. Evander Kensington!"
"So what?!" Another girl shot back as her voice was sharp. "Mr. Kensington never confirmed her as his partner, let alone girlfriend or spouse! It’s only her flaunting their so-called relationship!"
Her words caught my attention. Finally, someone who seemed to have the same thoughts as me. It wasn’t like Evander had openly accepted her as his girlfriend.
"Oh my gosh! Have you not seen yesterday’s article? It was confirmed by his secretary, Zaniel, himself!" Another girl interjected, her voice a mix of shock and superiority, as if it were something great.
"What?! What are you talking about? What article is that?" The sharp-voiced girl demanded, clearly taken aback; she had clearly not expected this.
At this point, I couldn’t help but glance up from my script. What article? I hadn’t heard about any confirmation. My thoughts swirled as I debated whether to ignore them or lean in to hear more. It wasn’t like I cared about Susan’s life, but the idea of her being linked to Evander was making me infuriated.
Was he really lying? Should I be accepting him to chase after me?
"Apparently," the girl continued, clearly enjoying the attention. "Zaniel said they have been seeing each other. It was all over the articles yesterday!"
"That’s insane," someone else whispered, their tone a mix of disbelief and envy.
"Insane or not, it’s true!" the girl declared with a shrug.
I clenched my jaw, trying not to let their words distract me, but my focus was already broken. What was Susan playing at? And how could Zaniel bluntly accept this?
It was just yesterday when Evander said all those words to me that were still echoing in my mind—and now there was already an article? Again?
My stomach churned as I tried to piece things together. Was this his plan of revenge? Or was it just another one of Susan’s publicity stunts?
"What the hell are you guys talking about? When did Zaniel say that Evander and Susan are in a relationship?" Sissy suddenly snapped, jumping up from her seat.
For once, I was glad she was here. Although she had been dreamy and distracted moments ago, hearing this gossip seemed to frustrate her just as much as it irritated me. At least I wasn’t the only one who found this ridiculous.
"Who the hell are you?" The gossip girl shot back, glaring at Sissy like she had no right to interrupt.
"Who the hell are you to spread such nonsense?" Sissy retorted, folding her arms. I had to admit, her feisty side was impressive whenever she lost her cool.
"Here, see this!" The girl smirked, pulling out her phone. She shoved the screen in Sissy’s face, clearly enjoying the drama she was stirring up. I leaned in to take a look too as I was unable to resist anymore.
There it was, bold and clear—a news article from a popular gossip site. The headline screamed, "Miss Susan Moreau: The Woman Behind the Storm!" Below it, the article described a meeting where Mr. Zaniel, Evander’s trusted secretary, had allegedly mentioned Susan.
According to the article, Zaniel was overheard saying that Susan was "really important" to Mr. Kensington—important enough for Evander to drop everything and personally take care of her at the hospital after her accident yesterday.
I felt my jaw tighten. The story painted a picture of Evander as some devoted partner, rushing to Susan’s side without a second thought. But I knew better. This felt calculated, like something Susan herself might have orchestrated because Evander had been on my side yesterday.
