Chapter 43: His Care For Someone Else!
Evander’s POV
I stepped into the hospital, feeling my stomach turn with each step. The sterile smell, the cold white walls—it was all too familiar, and it reminded me why I hated hospitals. If it weren’t for Grandma, I wouldn’t have set foot in here.
"Good morning, Master Evander," Nurse Julie greeted me politely. I gave her a quick nod and took a seat on the couch by the bed, my eyes falling on my sleeping grandmother. Her face looked pale and frail. She was nothing but a shadow of the strong woman I remembered.
For a moment, I wondered if she had been different when raising my father— if she had been soft and warm, or if she was as distant as the rest of our family. I couldn’t picture it. Tenderness wasn’t something we were taught to recognize or hold onto.
"How is she doing?" I asked, my voice sounded colder than I intended, but that was how I always sounded. Detached and cold!
"She is stable, but..." Nurse Julie paused, her hands smoothing out the comforter over my grandmother. "She keeps calling for Madam Claire, almost every day."
A twinge of irritation flared up at the mention of Claire. Even here, my grandmother’s mind drifted to her. As if Claire was more a part of this family than I ever was.
"She hated me. She hated everything that had to do with me," I muttered to myself, leaning back in the couch. How could I even think about bringing Claire here? The thought alone felt absurd.
I was still in my thought as I barely registered what Nurse Julie said but when I did, I almost couldn’t believe it.
"I called Madam Claire this morning. She was fast asleep but agreed to come as soon as she could. I am not sure why she is late, though..." Julie’s voice trailed off, but it was loud enough for me to hear every word.
My eyes snapped toward her, and I stood up, towering over her. My voice was sharp, cutting through the air between us. "What did you just say?"
Julie took a small step back, eyes widening slightly as she fumbled over her words. "I—uh—I just thought it would be good to inform Madam Claire. Given how often the Old Madam calls for her..."
My jaw tightened as her explanation continued. "You had no right to call her. Not without my permission." The words were cold, edged with the irritation clawing at me. I didn’t want anyone to trouble her! It was already hard enough for me to make things up for her and these people are troubling her; first my mother and then them!
"Forgive me, Master," she murmured as she lowered her gaze. "I just thought it would help..."
I took a deep breath and resisted the urge to show more emotion than I already had. "Next time, don’t think. Just do as you are told." I turned back to leave when the door of the wardroom pushed open and two figure entered the room.
Claire’s POV
I arrived at the hospital with Eliam in my arms. Sissy had followed me, but thankfully stopped to buy some fruit for Grandma, sparing her from hearing any cold words Evander just had said.
As I entered Grandma’s room, I spotted Evander by her bed, his expression as distant as ever. I hugged Eliam a bit closer, keeping my focus on Grandma, hoping this visit would go smoothly.
"Aunt Julie, you can contact me whenever you want! I can go wherever I want!" I said, trying to keep my voice steady as I avoided looking at Evander.
Just then, Eliam wiggled out of my arms and rushed over to him. "Daddy!" he exclaimed, hugging Evander tightly and he lifted him up effortlessly.
"Did you sleep well?" Evander asked, but his voice was cold and distant. Even though I could hear him, it annoyed me. His tone was just as icy with Eliam as it was with me, showing no warmth or kindness. It was so different from the caring person I remembered from our school and college days. How could someone change so dramatically!?
"Yes, daddy! And I even drank milk today!" Eliam replied proudly. Evander seemed surprised. "Did you really? But I heard that you dislike having milk!"
"But... but Mommy gave it to me," Eliam said, his voice filled with excitement. "And she even promised Eliam that she wouldn’t leave me!"
Hearing Eliam talk about his excitement warmed my heart. But will I be able to keep the promise with him?
"Really? Little Young Master, did you really drink milk?" Nurse Julie asked, surprised, just like Evander. I sighed, knowing that it was normal for kids to dislike milk. I had hated it as a child too, and honestly, I still did.
I tried to ignore their chatter as I walked over to my grandmother. She was still sleeping peacefully, but seeing her like this broke my heart. I wished there was something more I could do for her.
Just then, Sissy burst into the room, her enthusiastic voice cutting through the tension. "Claire! Gurl, I’m here!" She entered with a bright bouquet of flowers in one hand and a basket of fruit in the other, instantly brightening the atmosphere. I couldn’t help but smile at her excitement.
"Calm down! Grandma is sleeping!" I instantly sushed her.
"Oh, I am sorry!" Sissy handed the things to Nurse Julie and covered her mouth. "How is she doing!?"
"I don’t know! Let’s ask Nurse Julie later," I said in a hushed tone.
However, no matter how hard we tried to keep everything quiet, Evander’s loud ringtone eventually woke Grandma up.
"Hello!" he answered the call, gently placing Eliam on the couch. "What!? What happened to Susan?" His voice shifted to a concerned one. "Is she alright? No! I will be there! Nothing can happen to her!"
With that, he hurried out of the room after instructing Nurse Julie to take care of Eliam and send him to his secretary.
As expected, he would always rush to her no matter what! He had never shown me that kind of care, not even once. It stung to see how easily he shifted his concern to Susan!
