Chapter 31: "No One Touches What’s Mine And Gets Away With It!"
Evander’s POV
"Are you alright?" I asked as I gently wrapped my hand around her shoulder. She flinched and stiffened at my touch! I couldn’t tell if she was uncomfortable or just scared of me.
"I... I am fine," Claire muttered, her voice barely above a whisper as she tried to pull away. I tightened my hold to keep her close.
"Do not move." My voice came out cold and unyielding, no matter how hard I tried to soften it. Tenderness didn’t come naturally to me; it felt foreign and uncomfortable. This was how I had been taught and raised.
Claire froze as if immobilized by fear. I could sense her uneasiness, but I set it aside for now but I couldn’t focus on that right now. My gaze shifted to the man standing across from us, his face pale, his eyes wide as if he had just encountered a ghost.
"What are you doing here?" I demanded in a sharp voice.
The man didn’t respond, but his gaze darted between me and Claire, as though he knew something he shouldn’t. I felt Claire tense even more beside me, and I could hear her breathing faster. She wouldn’t look at me or the man.
I leaned closer to her ear. "Stay still. I won’t let anyone harm you," I whispered, my tone softening, or I thought it was.
But Claire stayed silent as if she didn’t wish to talk anymore. She glanced at Eliam by my side, who was whimpering in fear as tears streamed out of his eyes.
I realized Claire didn’t want to speak in front of the child, likely worried about scaring him even more.
"You!" I turned to George, my voice cold and commanding. "Stay here! Don’t move an inch." Without waiting for his reaction, I leaned down and scooped Claire up from the floor, lifting her in my arms as easily as I had on our wedding night.
"Ah!" She gasped as her eyes grew bigger in surprise and her arms instinctively wrapped around my neck.
"I am taking you and the baby to your room," I said in a calm voice, gesturing for Eliam to follow. I carried her down the hallway, making my way to the only room in sight.
As I stepped inside, a strange scent caught my attention, something unfamiliar and out of place. It didn’t smell like Claire, and I couldn’t tell if it belonged to a man or a woman.
"You... You are sharing this room with someone?" I asked, frowning as I took in the unfamiliar smell.
"Let me down!" She demanded, her eyes flashing with annoyance as she glared up at me.
I ignored her words for a moment. I looked around the room, scanning every corner as if it would reveal the source of my unease. Then, carefully, I set her down on her feet and helped her to the bed.
"Who has been in here, Claire?" I asked, as my tone turned colder, even if I tried to stay calm.
Just the thought of Claire being with someone else was driving me insane. When she was far away, I could manage, but now, with her right in front of me, the idea of her with another person made me both anxious and furious.
"Yes! Someone does live with me!" she snapped, her eyes narrowing in frustration. "But, Mr. Kensington, are you seriously that clueless, or can’t you see that everything here belongs to a woman?" She rolled her eyes, clearly annoyed.
I glanced around, taking in the details I’d missed in my haze of jealousy. Dresses hanging neatly, a vanity cluttered with perfumes and hairpins, soft-colored blankets on the bed—all undeniably feminine.
"Now, can you please leave my room? I don’t let strangers enter my room!" She stated, making me freeze in my place.
Strange? Was that all I was for her?
I inhaled deeply as I walked out of the room, asking Eliam to keep Claire company.

I stepped out of the room to find George pacing anxiously in the living room. Just the sight of him made my fists clench. I wanted nothing more than to knock him flat for everything he had put Claire through. Was this how he had treated her before? The thought alone made my blood boil.
"Why are you here?" I asked, keeping my voice steady.
George looked up being all defensive. "I... I told you, I was just disciplining my daughter. She cheated on you and ran off!"
I took a step closer, my eyes cold as I stared him down. "Did I ever ask you to step in for me? Have I once come to you about anything she did?"
He looked away, trying to avoid my burning gaze, but I wasn’t finished.
"You crossed a line. And let me be clear— no one touches what’s mine and gets away with it," I said, my voice low but firm. I gestured toward the door, barely able to hold back my anger.
"Get out," I told him, keeping my tone calm so I wouldn’t scare the little guy inside the room. "Now."
George hesitated, but my glare must have convinced him. He muttered something under his breath and shuffled out the door.
I let out a slow, cold breath. My mind raced with ideas on how to make George pay. Letting him slip away without consequence didn’t feel right to me. I couldn’t change the past—couldn’t undo what Claire had endured—but I was determined to make our present and future secure. I would not spare anyone who lay a finger on my wife!
