Chapter 29: “I Am Her Husband!"

Chapter 29: “I Am Her Husband!"

Evander’s POV

"Claire?" I called out, hoping for an answer. But there was only silence on the other end. "Maybe she called me by mistake," I muttered, about to end the call, when suddenly, a man’s voice came through. The contempt in his tone was clearly visible.

"Think a phone call’s going to stop me?"

What the hell was going on? My pulse quickened as I jumped out of bed and shoved on my shoes.

"Daddy, where are you going?" Eliam asked, wrapping his arms around my leg as he sensed something was wrong.

Then I heard Claire’s voice. She sounded frightened, her words trembling through the phone. "This is a crime! You can’t harm me!"

"Son, let’s go! Your mother seems to be in trouble!" I said as I scooped Eliam up into my arms and rushed toward the door as my heart pounded

The man’s voice came back, dark and taunting. "Is that so? Are you challenging me?"

"Claire, just hang on," I whispered, praying she could somehow hear me. My thoughts raced as I moved faster, desperate to reach her in time.

"I will call for help!" Claire’s voice was full of desperation. I could tell she was trying to buy time, trying to stay calm despite the danger. I clenched the phone tightly, holding onto the hope that she could hang on just a bit longer.

With Eliam holding on to me tightly, I ran out of the house, my mind focused on one thing: reaching Claire before it was too late.

My pulse pounded in my ears, blocking out every other thought. Thankfully, my car was still parked in the driveway. I settled Eliam into the back seat, buckling him in quickly.

"Daddy, is Mommy okay?" He asked, his small voice filled with worry as he looked at me with wide and confused eyes.

I forced a smile to reassure him, but I could barely keep the fear from my own voice. "Yes, buddy. We are going to make sure she is safe, okay? Just hold on."

I had never been this scared in my entire life as if my whole being was afraid that I might lose her. Having her around in the world, breathing the same air as me... I thought it was more than enough for me, but... the thought that she might be gone forever, made me almost lose my mind!

With a shaky breath, I turned the key, and the engine roared to life. I gripped the steering wheel, barely able to keep my hands steady as I drove onto the road.

Who was the man with her? Why was he threatening her? And how did this all happen so suddenly? This was all I could think about.

Eliam sat quietly in the back. He kept glancing at me, his little fingers gripping his seatbelt as he tried to understand what was going on.

I could hear their conversation but wasn’t sure what they were talking about.

"Who did you call?"

The man said and with a thud, the call cut off.

"What the hell happened!" I slapped the steering wheel in frustration. However, when my eyes fell on the rearview, I could see Little Eliam’s eyes were brimming with tears.

I inhaled deeply and raced the car on the road, breaking multiple red lights.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I reached the street where Claire was supposed to be. I parked the car, barely remembering to put it in park before jumping out. I quickly unbuckled Eliam, lifting him out of his seat and holding him close as we approached the building.

Yes, I knew where she lived and I am not ashamed to accept that I was trying to get anything related to her.

"Daddy, is Mommy in there?" He asked, clutching my shirt as he looked around with wide eyes.

I nodded. "Yes, son."

The building was an old one, with flickering lights lining the hallway. I moved as quietly as I could, holding Eliam tightly as I crept down the corridor. How could she live here? I thought.

I knew she lived in this area and this building, but I never expected it to be in such bad shape.

Claire lived on the third floor, and I was still on the second, as the elevators were not working at that moment.

As I reached the third floor, I heard it—a muffled voice from behind one of the doors.

"Leave right now!"

It was Claire’s voice. My heart lurched as I recognized it, followed by that man’s voice.. I shifted Eliam to my side to keep him safe.

"Do you think anyone would come to save you? No one lives here on this floor; I checked before coming."

I carefully set him down, crouching to his level. "Eliam, I need you to stay right here, okay? Be very quiet and don’t make a sound. I will be right back."

He nodded as his eyes were full of fear but also trust. "Okay, Daddy."

I stood up, my entire body tense as I approached the door. I could hear the man’s voice inside, still speaking in that cold, cruel tone.

"Think anyone’s coming to save you? I’ve made sure of that. No one’s going to interrupt us."

That person repeated himself.

My fists clenched, anger boiling within me. How dare he try to hurt Claire!

Without another thought, I raised my hand and knocked on the door. It was loud and forceful. The voices inside stopped abruptly. I held my breath, waiting for any reaction from the other side.

The loud knocks frightened Eliam, who rushed to me and hugged me from behind. I let him, as I couldn’t leave him alone.

Finally, I heard footsteps approaching the door. I prepared myself as the door slowly creaked open. A man stood there, his eyes narrowing as he looked me over.

"M-Mr. Evander!" The man said with a ghastly look on his face as his face turned pale. "Why are you here?" He inquired.

"I am her husband, and I can be wherever she is!"
