Chapter 20: Broken Beyond Repair!

Chapter 20: Broken Beyond Repair!

Claire’s POV

"Our dead child!?" Evander’s voice was hoarse, barely more than a whisper, but his words struck me like a sledgehammer. His face was pale, and his eyes which were usually so cold were now wide with shock and pain. "Claire, is that... is that true?"

I couldn’t move. My entire body felt frozen as if time had stopped. My heart pounded in my ears. Sissy’s hand fell away from my shoulder, and we both stared at him, utterly silent.

Evander took a step closer, his face twisted in regret and devastation. His voice cracked as he spoke again, louder this time, almost desperate. "Say something! Did I hear you right!?"

But I couldn’t. Nothing came out. The weight of our past, the lies, the pain—was too heavy, and it choked me. I stood rooted in place, my legs shaking as tears continued to fall uncontrollably.

"Why didn’t you tell me, Claire?" he demanded, his voice cracking with emotion. His usual commanding tone was gone, replaced with disbelief and guilt.

Tears streamed down my face, and I shook my head, my chest heaving with the sobs I could no longer hold back. "I couldn’t... I couldn’t tell you, Evander. You weren’t there!" My voice broke, my words laced with bitterness and raw pain. "You were with her, with Susan. I lost everything, Evander. I lost our baby, and you weren’t even there."

The pain on his face deepened as if my words physically hurt him. His fists clenched, and he looked like he was struggling to stay composed, but the cracks were there. The cold facade he had always worn around me was breaking, and I saw the regret and guilt in his eyes. "I... I didn’t know," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "I swear, Claire, if I had known... God, if I had known..."

"But you didn’t!" I screamed the anger I had tried to suppress for so long finally exploding. "You didn’t know because you didn’t care! You were too busy with her! Too busy living your life while I was suffering alone, Evander!" My chest tightened as rage mixed with the pain I had suffered, and I felt like I could hardly breathe. "And now... now you think you can just walk back into my life and fix everything with a few words!?"

He stood there, trembling, the strong, unfeeling man I once knew nowhere to be found. For the first time, I saw how broken he was. The vulnerability he had always hidden was clear on his face, but it didn’t matter now. Not after everything.

"I... I am not trying to fix anything, Claire," he said softly, his voice thick with sorrow. His eyes pleaded with me, but I couldn’t bear to look at him. "I just—"

"You just what!?" I cut him off, my voice shaking with fury. "You never cared about me, Evander! You hated me! You left me all alone with your cruel, heartless family, and I..." My voice broke, and I had to stop to catch my breath. "I suffered! I suffered every single day, and you didn’t care. Not once."

He dropped his head, his voice low, barely audible. "I never wanted that to happen. I never wanted to hurt you like this."

"Hah!" I let out a bitter laugh through my tears, wiping them away furiously as they kept falling. "You never wanted this to happen? Is that your excuse now? Do you think that makes it better? Evander, I can forgive you for a lot of things... your coldness, your indifference, the lies, but losing my child... that was my bottom line. And you crossed it."

The silence creeped between us. My words hung in the air, and for a brief moment, I saw a flicker of despair, helplessness, maybe even fear in his eyes. He took another step toward me, his hands reaching out slightly, but I flinched back, unable to handle his touch.

"I am not asking for forgiveness, Claire," he whispered, his voice low and filled with emotion. "I know I don’t deserve it. I know I have hurt you more than anyone ever should. But please... please give me a chance to make things right. Just one chance."

I looked at him, my heart breaking all over again. His eyes were filled with regret, guilt, and maybe love. But I couldn’t let myself believe it. It was too late for him to fix anything. I was too deep in the darkness, and I didn’t wish to come out from there.

My chest heaved with sobs, my hands trembling as I tried to wipe away the endless stream of tears. My voice cracked. "How, Evander?" I choked out and was barely able to speak.

"How do you make something right that’s already broken beyond repair? How do you bring back what’s gone? Can you bring my son back?! Can you bring back the five years I have spent suffering after marrying you?!"

Evander’s face paled, his eyes widening in disbelief as if he couldn’t understand what I had been through. His mouth opened slightly, but no words came. He stood there, frozen, searching for something to say but couldn’t find anything.

"Answer me!" I screamed, The years of hurt, the isolation, the betrayal—it all came pouring out like a dam that had finally burst. "Don’t just stand there! Say something!" My voice echoed off the walls, but no one said anything.

Evander lowered his head, his face twisted with guilt and shame, his hands clenched at his sides. But still, he said nothing. His silence was an admission and acknowledgment of everything I had lost because of him and because of us. He couldn’t give an answer, no apology that could fix what had already happened!
