Chapter 18: Can I Kiss You!
Claire’s POV
My heart skipped a beat. Did I hear him right? He missed me? Was this some kind of joke? Anger simmered beneath my skin as I tried to make sense of his words. This man, who had broken me in more ways than I could count, was standing here, saying he missed me?
I glared at him, my hands tightening into fists at my sides. "Are you serious?" I muttered under my breath, trying to keep my voice low. The last thing I wanted was to create a scene in front of everyone in the restaurant.
Sissy was still tense, standing protectively by my side, but I knew I had to handle this myself. "Follow me," I said sharply, pushing past him. I didn’t want to deal with this mess in front of curious eyes. Without looking back, I made my way outside, feeling his presence close behind me.
The second we were away from prying eyes, I turned to face him, arms crossed. My heart raced, but I masked it with a cold expression. "What do you mean, you missed me? You don’t get to say things like that after everything," I snapped as my voice was hard.
Evander didn’t say a word. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate step forward, forcing me to retreat until my back collided with the cold, hard wall behind me. I barely had time to process it before his strong arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me flush against his solid chest. My breath hitched, my heart hammering wildly in my chest.
"I can’t keep my eyes away from you," he murmured, his voice low and husky, as his lips hovered near my ear. His hot breath caressed my skin, sending a shiver down my spine. I flustered, heat pooling in my cheeks, my body betraying the emotions I desperately wanted to suppress.
He leaned in closer, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. "Your ears," he whispered, his voice dipping seductively, "are still the most sensitive part of your body."
A gasp escaped me, my skin tingling as a wave of desire coursed through me. His presence overwhelmed me, making it hard to think straight.
Evander’s hand tightened around my waist, pulling me even closer, his chest pressing firmly against mine. "If you allow me," he said, his lips barely inches from mine, "then I would like to kiss you."
The tension between us was electric, making it impossible to focus on anything but how close he was, and how much I struggled to resist.
What the hell! I thought, and with every ounce of strength I had, I pushed Evander away from me—or maybe he just let me go.
"How dare you!" I spat, glaring at him with a mix of anger and disbelief. Just this morning, he was accusing me of being with someone else, and now here he was, trying to seduce me like none of that mattered. Did he really think I was that easy?
I crossed my arms, still trying to catch my breath while staring Evander down. "You can’t just show up, say a few words, and expect me to fall for it," I said, my voice shaky with anger. I barely finished speaking when a familiar voice interrupted.
"What’s going on here?" Susan asked with a look of disgust on her face. "Are you trying to seduce Mr. Kensington again?" Her words were sharp, each one like a slap in the face.
"What?" I turned to her, utterly shocked. She had never been this bold in front of Evander before. Where was this sudden confidence coming from? Was she losing her mind, or did she think Evander was going to defend her?
Before I could gather my thoughts, Sissy barged into the scene, fiery and ready for battle. "Oh, look who’s talking! You barged into our place to threaten us, and now you are accusing my friend of being a seducer? Get a grip! You can’t even keep the man!"
"You are out of line, Sissy," Susan shot back, eyes narrowing, but before she could continue, Evander’s voice cut through like ice.
"I am not her man," he said coldly, dismissing Susan like she was nothing. His eyes then fixed on me. "I am only Claire’s man."
What?! My heart skipped, and my knees nearly buckled at his words. I stood frozen, staring at him, not knowing whether to laugh or scream. How dare he say something like that after everything he’d done? My mind was spinning with anger, confusion, and something else I refused to name.
I clenched my fists, trying to hold myself together. I was tempted to march over and crack his head open to see what the hell he was thinking. "Evander, you can’t just—" I started, but my voice faltered. His intense gaze was holding me in place, stirring things I didn’t want to feel.
Sissy looked between us, sensing the tension. "You can’t have it both ways, Evander. You either want her, or you don’t."
Evander didn’t even blink as he replied, "I have never wanted anyone else."
My breath caught, and the ground felt like it was shifting beneath me. Was he lying to me, or did he mean what he said? Before I could think straight, Susan chimed in, her voice trembling.
"Evan..." she whined, lowering her head as if to wipe away nonexistent tears. She clung to his arm. "I know you’re doing this for Eliam, but—"
