Chapter 169: Evander’s Twins’ First Love
Susan’s POV
"Hah!" I couldn’t help but laugh as I read the comments under the numerous posts on social media. I couldn’t stop remembering how Evander’s face looked when I brought up Claire’s scandal with Damian.
It was priceless.
Who cared if it was true or not? As long as it filled Evander’s mind with doubt. Seeing how he looked at me then, I could tell how pathetic he felt.
"What are you so happy about?" Angel, my assistant, asked, raising her brows curiously as she walked into the room.
"What am I thinking about?" I chuckled, waving my hand at the tablet. "I mean, look at these comments! Claire always hated me for being in the news with her husband, but look at her now. She is the one making headlines with a man who is not her husband!"
Angel leaned closer, her eyes scanning the screen briefly. "Ah," she said, clapping her hands together. "Should I ask the keyboard warriors to stop? I mean... this is escalating a little too far, don’t you think?"
"What?" I snapped, glaring at her. Her words ruined my mood entirely. "Why are you being such a mood breaker?"
Angel frowned, hesitating before speaking again. "Susan, maybe this isn’t—"
"What?" I cut her off sharply, my irritation bubbling over. "What is it now?"
She hesitated, looking at me with something strange in her eyes. Was it a pity? Sympathy? Whatever it was, it annoyed me even more.
"Susan!" she exclaimed, her voice firmer now.
"Can you please stop ruining my fun?" I gritted my teeth, shifting my focus back to the comments on my tablet. But Angel, as always, wasn’t going to give up that easily.
"Susan, don’t you think this is getting a bit out of hand?" she pressed, repeating herself once again.
I sighed dramatically, rolling my eyes. "Why do you care? Claire deserves this. She always acts like she is better than everyone else. Well, guess what? Now everyone knows she is not so perfect."
"But what if—"
I cut her off again, snapping, "No ’what ifs,’ Angel! Just let me enjoy this moment."
Angel fell silent, but the look she gave me lingered, making my skin crawl. Why was she acting like this? She was supposed to be on my side.
"Tell me! Tell me what the hell do you want!?" I slammed my tablet down on the table and turned to Angel as my patience was wearing thin. "Why are you suddenly being so caring toward Claire? Weren’t you the one who always helped me with everything I did in the past?"
I wasn’t wrong here. I had done many things—evil, selfish things— and I was fully aware of it. But regret? I had never once felt regret for what I had done. Not once. Yet now, for some reason, Angel’s behavior was poking me which was making me angry.
Angel crossed her arms, her expression unreadable, though her voice carried a softness that only irritated me more. "Susan," she began slowly, "don’t you think what happened to Miss Diana wasn’t a coincidence?"
"What?" I blinked, confused by her sudden shift in topic.
Angel took a deep breath, looking me straight in the eye. "Do you really think Evander would leave Claire after whatever happened to Claire and Damian after a scandal broke out?
I frowned as her words were really a joy kill for me. "What are you even talking about?" I asked, trying to sound dismissive, but my voice came out quieter than I intended.
Angel leaned closer, her tone dropping as if sharing a dangerous secret. "Think about it, Susan. Miss Diana’s accident. The sudden collapse of Mia’s reputation and Brian’s family. All these things happening at the same time... doesn’t that seem strange to you?"
I felt my stomach twist, but I forced a laugh to mask my unease. "What are you trying to say? That some invisible hand is pulling the strings? That’s ridiculous."
"Is it?" Angel’s gaze didn’t waver. "You have always been smart, Susan. You know better than anyone that coincidences are rare in our world. Someone out there might be doing exactly what you are doing— but better than you, and... I am sure you know who that better person is!"
Her words hung in the air, and for a moment, I didn’t know what to say. The thought of Evander doing all these things for Claire and going through all the way to ruin three big families of the city at once.
I shook my head, forcing myself to regain control. "Whatever is happening, it’s none of my concern," I said firmly, trying to push away the nagging doubt creeping into my thoughts.
Angel didn’t argue any further. She simply stood there; her silence spoke louder than any words.
For Angel, it seemed clear that Evander would try to do the same to us that he did to those three morons— destroy me for mistreating his wife! But had she forgotten who I was?
I am Susan!
How could Evander even think of laying a finger on me? Even if he wanted to, he wouldn’t dare. Why? Because I am the first and only love of Evander’s twin brother, Colton.
Colton loved me like crazy—so much that even until his last breath, I was the center of his world. And that was the reason Evander had always tolerated me, no matter what I did. He never said no, never questioned me. He gave me everything I desired, no matter how selfish or outrageous it was.
If I asked to be his secretary, Evander would let me. If I decided I wanted to be an actor, he would help me get any role I wanted. His love for Colten was unshakeable, and what worked in my favor even more was that Colton asked Evander to take care of me during his last days.
When he died, I thought it was my chance with Evander and I could finally be with him. But then... where did Claire come into all of this?
