Chapter 124: Dear Wife!

Chapter 124: Dear Wife!

Evander’s POV

Sissy gazed at me with seriousness in her eyes. I could tell that she really cared about Claire, which was why I could withstand those ugly words and glares from her.

"But don’t think for a second that you can control me or her, Evander. Claire is stronger than you think, and I am certainly here to take the burden off her shoulder... that is you!" Sissy said and walked away from there.

As she walked out, I exhaled slowly, my fists clenched. Perhaps she was right. Claire was strong, but that didn’t mean I didn’t want to shield her from unnecessary stress.

I turned back to the room, my resolve hardening. I would make amends, not just with words but with actions. This time, I wouldn’t fail her.

I decided to check on Claire to see if Sissy was troubling her. But as I approached her room, I stopped dead in my tracks, my ears catching her voice through the slightly ajar door.

Claire’s words stunned me.

She had decided to let me pursue her. She was willing to give me a chance— a chance to redeem myself.

"Fuck!" I cursed under my breath, stepping back before anyone could notice me. My heart raced, but it wasn’t with joy alone. It was a complex storm of emotions such as guilt, relief, and something deeper I couldn’t quite name at the moment.

"How could I not understand her?" I muttered to myself as I leaned against the wall. "She has been willing to try, to move forward with me, and all I did was push her away. I even told her I would divorce her! How could I be so blind? So cruel?"

The guilt clawed at me; it made me breathless and suffocated me. But beneath the weight of my remorse was a small ember of hope. Claire still had me in her thoughts. She wanted to give me another chance.

My lips curled into a bittersweet smile. I knew I didn’t deserve her forgiveness, not after everything I had done to hurt her, but the fact that she was willing to try gave me a renewed sense of purpose to live the life, it was more than enough for me.

I exhaled slowly, trying to calm the whirlwind of emotions inside me. "I have been a fool," I whispered, running a hand through my hair. "But I won’t waste this opportunity. Not this time."

I knew I was being selfish, holding on to this hope, this chance she was offering me. But I also knew that if we could make it work, if I could prove myself to her, we could both be happy.

And for once, I was willing to let myself be selfish, if only to build a future where we both belonged together... to each other only.

I went to the living room, determined to wait for Claire. Minutes felt like hours to me, but finally, she arrived.

"You are here," I said the moment she stepped in, my voice calm but eager. "Let’s go have breakfast."

Her brows arched slightly as she looked at me. She seemed clearly surprised. "Were you waiting for me?"

"Yes," I admitted, my voice soft but steady. "I wanted to eat with you. I didn’t want you to feel alone while eating like the days in the past."

Her expression flickered with something unreadable— was it surprise, or something else? I couldn’t tell what she was feeling at the moment.

Without waiting for her to respond, I gently reached for her hand, intertwining her fingers with mine. "Come," I said, guiding her toward the dining area. "Let’s start the day together."

Claire followed behind me; her steps were hesitant at first, but I could feel the tension between us easing little by little. Maybe this small gesture wasn’t enough to fix everything, but it was a start. A step toward making things right.

Claire’s POV

I managed to slip away from Sissy’s fiery temper. I felt extremely relieved but still rattled by our earlier exchange we had about Evander. However, what caught me off guard was seeing Evander still at home, sitting silently in the living room.

I had intended to find him anyway, mainly to tell him to stop being rude to Sissy, but the sight of him stopped me in my tracks. There was something different about his demeanor—his eyes looked distant and empty; it made me forget my original purpose I had entirely.

The realization struck me hard when I noticed his actions. He wasn’t just sitting there idly; he had been waiting for me. It wasn’t like before, when silence and indifference filled the air between us. This time, his gesture felt purposeful, like he wanted to change everything.

His gestures overwhelmed me as the memories of lonely meals and cold silences came rushing back, but this small act was entirely different. It carried meaning, a quiet acknowledgment of my feelings.

Before I could fully process the moment or respond to what it stirred in me, he reached for my hand. The warmth of his touch silenced the thoughts racing in my mind. Without hesitation, he guided me forward, leading me toward the dining area with steady steps, leaving me with an overwhelming mix of emotions I wasn’t prepared to face just yet.

He released my hand and moved ahead to pull out a chair for me. His actions were so unexpectedly gentle that I was still trying to make sense of it when his next words nearly choked me on my own saliva.

"Have a seat, dear wife," he said with a casual tone that I almost choked on my saliva.

Dear wife? The words echoed in my mind, leaving me momentarily stunned. My breath hitched, and I couldn’t stop my eyes from narrowing at him. Was he being serious, or had something snapped in his brain?

I blinked rapidly, trying to regain composure, but my thoughts ran wild as I wanted to open his head and see what he had in his brain.
