Chapter 111: I’m Similar To Gloria!
Evander’s POV
"Thank you!" Claire said in a polite tone.
"For you, Claire," I replied, my voice low but steady, "I will do whatever it takes."
Her expression flickered for a second, but she didn’t reply. Instead, she placed the phone on my desk and stood. "I will let you know when I have spoken to her." She rose to her feet and turned on her heels to leave.
"Sure," I replied with a mild smile.
Claire stopped in the middle but stopped "Well..." Claire began, her voice soft, almost uncertain. It was clear she was hesitating, her fingers lightly fidgeting with the hem of her shirt.
"If you want to ask something, just go ahead," I said, breaking the silence. Her unease didn’t sit well with me. I wasn’t one to open up easily, but if she wanted answers, I was ready to give them— at least as much as I could.
She glanced up, her eyes meeting mine briefly before darting away. "Oh, well... I never heard about your father before. He wasn’t even at our wedding," she said, her tone cautious, as though she didn’t want to pry too much.
I leaned back in my chair, exhaling slowly. "That’s not surprising," I said, my voice even. "My father and I... we don’t have the kind of relationship where you would expect him to be around for something like that."
Her brows furrowed slightly, a mixture of curiosity and concern flashing across her face. "I didn’t mean to bring up anything uncomfortable," she added quickly.
"It’s fine," I reassured her, though the tightness in my chest suggested otherwise. "My father... let’s just say he wasn’t exactly involved in my life. He chose his new family over everything else years ago."
Claire frowned, tilting her head as if piecing together the gaps. "New family?"
I gave a slight nod. "After my mother... after things fell apart with her, he remarried. Started over. And that was that. He left me with Gloria and never looked back."
Her lips parted as though she wanted to say something, but no words came out.
"It’s not something I dwell on anymore," I added, forcing a casualness into my tone that I didn’t feel. "But if you are wondering why he wasn’t at the wedding, well, now you know."
She lowered her gaze, her fingers still restless. "I can’t imagine how that must have felt," she murmured.
I shrugged, though her words stirred something buried deep. "You learn to stop expecting things from people who have already let you down."
The silence stretched between us, heavy with unspoken thoughts. Then Claire straightened, her expression soft but resolved. "I appreciate you telling me," she said quietly.
I gave her a small nod, not trusting myself to say more. Some wounds were better left untouched, but for now, it felt like a small weight had been lifted—just enough to breathe a little easier.
"So... if he left you, how did he divorce Gloria?" Claire asked, her brows knitting together in genuine confusion. "I mean, if he wanted to divorce her, wouldn’t he have done it ages ago?"
Her question lingered in the air, striking a chord I wasn’t sure I wanted to face. I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees as I clasped my hands together. "That’s the thing—he hasn’t divorced her," I said, my voice laced with frustration.
Claire’s eyes widened slightly. "What? Then... why is she still his wife if he’s moved on with someone else?"
I let out a sharp exhale, shaking my head. "It’s complicated. He claims he has his reasons, though none of them make sense to me. Keeping Gloria in the marriage isn’t about love —it’s about control. My father has this twisted need to keep her trapped, as if he enjoys holding all the cards."
Claire tilted her head, her confusion deepening. "But why would he care about her at all if he has built a new life? It doesn’t make any sense?."
"It’s not about caring," I clarified, my tone colder now. "It’s about power. He doesn’t want Gloria to have the upper hand or any kind of freedom. And honestly, I think it’s his way of punishing her... and maybe even me."
Her expression softened, a hint of sadness flickering in her eyes. "Punishing you?"
I gave a bitter laugh. "Yeah, Claire. Punishment. For being the constant reminder of a life he chose to abandon. For being Gloria’s son. For existing in the first place."
She opened her mouth to say something but closed it again, seemingly unsure of how to respond. After a moment, she placed her hand lightly on mine, her touch gentle but grounding. "I don’t think anyone deserves that, Evander. Especially not you."
I glanced at her hand, the warmth seeping into my skin despite the coldness in my heart. "It doesn’t matter," I muttered. "All I care about now is making sure Gloria doesn’t get her hands on what isn’t hers. That’s the only reason I have even involved him in all this."
Claire nodded, her gaze unwavering. "Then he divorced him in the end for you, isn’t it?"
"I am not sure why he did that, but he fulfilled every demand I made," I said, leaning back in my chair. My gaze drifted to the floor as I tried to make sense of it myself. "You see, he’s not a good man, Claire. But since I am his son... maybe I am no different."
Claire’s brows furrowed as she looked at me, concern evident in her eyes. "Evander, you are not—"
I held up a hand to stop her. "Don’t, Claire. Don’t try to sugarcoat it. I have thought about it long enough. In some ways..." I hesitated, exhaling sharply before continuing. "In some ways, I even see myself in Gloria. Twisted, consumed by darkness— capable of swallowing everything and everyone around me."
