Chapter 101: Claire Was My Anchor At The Moment!
Evander’s POV
I started the engine, my grip on the steering wheel tight as I tried to focus. "Claire, call Zaniel," I said, my voice sharp but controlled. I knew Zaniel would still be knee-deep in investigating the people connected to Elijah, but this was urgent.
Claire nodded, quickly dialing the number. The moment the call connected, Zaniel’s voice came through, hurried and direct.
"Yes, boss! I am still looking into—"
"She took Eliam away!" I cut him off, my tone cold and unyielding.
There was a pause before Zaniel responded, his voice laced with disbelief. "What!? She moved that fast." I could hear him shuffling through papers or something in the background. "I will bring the lawyer and meet you in forty-five minutes!" he added before abruptly hanging up.
I clenched my jaw, frustrated but not surprised by Zaniel’s reaction. This wasn’t just a step too far—it was war.
We were at war!
"Are you sure it was Gloria who took Eliam?" Claire asked, her voice steady but tinged with uncertainty. I glanced at her, noting the color on her face returned as she looked more determined than anxious.
"Who else would dare?" I said in a low tone, the anger simmering beneath my calm exterior. Gloria had been playing games for too long, and now she had crossed the line.
Claire frowned, her brows knitting together. "But what about the women the nanny mentioned? She said there were several of them."
I exhaled sharply, gripping the steering wheel tighter. "I don’t know who they were," I admitted, my voice edged with frustration. "But if Eliam is gone, Gloria has to be behind it. She is always pulling the strings, always looking for ways to hurt me... to hurt us."
Claire stayed silent for a moment, her gaze fixed on me. I could feel the tension radiating off her, but there was also a quiet strength in her presence.
"She must know this won’t end well for her," I added, my voice dropping to a dangerous calm. "She is just as ruthless as she is reckless, but taking Eliam? That’s the last mistake she will ever make."
The determination in my words wasn’t just for Claire—it was for myself. I would find Eliam, no matter what it took.
I brought the car to a screeching halt in front of the main mansion, my jaw tight as I prepared to storm in and get my son back. However, as soon as Claire and I stepped out, two unfamiliar guards blocked our path.
"You can’t go in, sir," one of them said, his tone firm and unyielding, as though he owned the place.
I glared at him, my patience wearing thin. "Is that so?" I growled, my fist clenching at my side. The urge to punch the smug expression off his face was almost too strong to resist.
Before I could put my thoughts to reality, Claire grabbed my arm and tugged me down to her level. "Wait," she whispered, her voice urgent yet controlled.
I frowned, leaning in slightly as she spoke into my ear. "I heard voices coming from the living room. Someone else is here with Gloria."
Her words gave me pause. "So?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. My patience was hanging by a thread, and I didn’t see the point of delaying.
"So," she replied, glancing at the guards, "these men don’t seem like your average security detail. They are too polished, and too professional. I think they are from an NGO or something similar."
Her observation snapped me out of my frustration for a moment, and I studied the guards more closely. Claire was right—they weren’t dressed like Gloria’s usual lackeys, and their stances were too disciplined.
I took a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down. Charging in recklessly wasn’t an option, not when Eliam’s safety was on the line. "Fine," I muttered, turning my attention back to the guards.
"If you know what’s good for you, step aside," I warned, as my tone was extremely icy and commanding.
The guards exchanged a brief glance but didn’t move. "We are under strict orders, sir," one of them replied.
"Strict orders?" I scoffed. "Let me guess—Gloria put you up to this?"
Claire placed a hand on my arm again, grounding me. "Evander, we need to be smart about this," she murmured.
She was right, as much as it was getting on my nerves. I couldn’t let my temper jeopardize everything. Gloria was playing a dangerous game, and I needed to play it better.
"Excuse me," Claire stepped forward, her voice calm but commanding. "This mansion belongs to my husband, and he has every right to enter," she stated. Her tone was polite yet firm.
The guard hesitated, glancing at his companion before responding. "Even if that’s the case... we can’t. Our madam is inside, and we are under strict orders not to let anyone in and..."
He was still talking when Claire cut him off sharply. "Pardon me," she said, her eyes narrowing slightly, "but what you are doing is unlawful. If you don’t let us in, you will be the one facing legal consequences."
She raised her hand and gestured toward the CCTV cameras mounted around the property. "As you can see, everything is being recorded. We can easily prove that you are obstructing the rightful owners of this property."
The guards exchanged uneasy glances, clearly caught off guard by Claire’s confidence and logic.
I stood back, watching her handle the situation with a mixture of awe and relief. If she weren’t here, I might have already escalated things with violence, which would have played right into Gloria’s hands. My reputation—and the case for my son’s custody—would have taken a devastating hit.
So, this was your real plan, Mother. To paint me as an unstable, violent man unfit to protect and raise my son.
I clenched my fists at my sides, seething internally, but I kept my focus on Claire. She was my anchor at this moment, turning the tables with her poise and intelligence.
