Chapter 50: his name is Cassian
Chapter 50: Chapter 50: his name is Cassian
The young maid shot the head maid a smug look before turning to the nanny. "I have urgent news for the mistress, and it cannot wait."
The head maid clenched her jaw; she was biting her words back. She could clearly see it—the ambition in the maid’s eyes, which glittered like greed in her eyes. The delusional belief that she could climb higher with just one secret.
The head maid tried to stifle a laugh at the foolishness. She wanted to tell the girl that her place wasn’t so easily won and that the favors in this palace came with a price. But instead, she stepped back and allowed the nanny to take over.
"Very well, Come with me," the nanny said with her usual stern but authoritative voice.
The young maid was brimming with a sense of victory as she followed the nanny. As they walked past the head maid, she cast one final look over her shoulder, her lips curling into a satisfied smile. The head maid could only shake her head.
"Fool," she muttered under her breath. "She’ll learn soon enough."
As the maid followed the nanny deeper into the palace, her eyes widened in awe at the grandeur of the queen’s private chambers.
The intricate draperies hanging from the walls, the gold trim that lined the furniture, and the soft glow from the chandeliers created an atmosphere of untouchable elegance.
The sight alone made the maid’s heart race with greed. She could almost imagine herself in such luxury—if her news was truly as valuable as she believed.
But the nanny, who is walking ahead of her, didn’t turn back to notice the glint of ambition in the maid’s eyes. Her footsteps were steady, and her back remained straight, as if she had long grown used to such splendor.
When they reached the end of the corridor, the nanny stopped abruptly and motioned for the maid to stay put.
"Wait here," the nanny instructed the maid with her cold tone, which left no room for argument.
The maid halted there, her gaze still wandering over the beauty of the room before her. From where she stood, she could just make out the silhouette of the queen seated on a luxurious chair, her posture regal.
The nanny approached the queen and bowed slightly as she leaned in to whisper a few words.
The maid strained her ears; she was desperate to catch even a fragment of their conversation, but she couldn’t hear a thing.
Her chest tightened with frustration, and her expression twisted into a sneer as thoughts raced through her mind.
Why wasn’t I allowed to speak directly to the queen? Why wasn’t I brought inside? Her lips curled slightly in irritation. Do they think I’m not worthy?
But just as quickly as her sneer appeared, she smoothed her face into a neutral expression, she knows that any sign of her true feelings would give her away.
Her eyes quickly scanned the room again, just in time to see the nanny returning.
Come inside, the nanny said, and without waiting for her response, she walked inside back.
The maid’s expression brightened at the thought of going inside the room of the most dignified lady in the kingdom.
Her heart could not help but flutter as she took her step inside, She looked everywhere with her eyes wide open, and caressed the door of the chamber; even the handle on it is made of pure gold.
She could not help but touch it more, she had seen for the first time so much gold that she could imagine herself, if this much gold was sold, just how rich she would be.
The lady sits on the royal chair, looks at the greedy expression of the maid, and a slow sneer emerges on her face.
"Peasant," she murmured and looked away; it was disgusting for her to look even a second.
As the maid’s attention shifted in front of her, her eyes widen as she stared at the otherworldly lady, who sat on the royal chair casually, emitting the grace and dignity, she could never imagine herself to be.
The maid’s heart skipped a beat as she stared at her—too long, too brazenly.
"Lower your gaze, lowly life," the nanny’s stern voice cut through the maid’s reverie like a knife. "And kneel before your queen."
The command hit her like a slap, and the maid’s knees buckled as she quickly dropped to the ground, bowing her head and pressing her hands to the floor in a show of reverence.
"Your Majesty," the maid murmured, her voice shaking slightly as she recited the customary words of respect.
Inside, however, her mind buzzed with a mix of excitement and fear. This is it, she thought, this is my chance.
The queen’s expression was unreadable. Her regal presence radiated authority, and the air between them grew heavier with every passing moment.
"Speak," the queen said, her voice smooth but edged with steel. "You came here in such a hurry. What news is so urgent that it couldn’t wait?"
The maid swallowed hard, her heart pounding in her chest, but she knew this was her moment. She steadied herself and, with her head still bowed, began to recount what she had seen in Prince Dorian’s chambers.
"Your Majesty," the maid began, her voice trembling slightly. "I... I was tending to my duties when I overheard something in Prince Dorian’s chambers. He...
The maid recited everything she had seen in the prince Dorian’s chamber slowly.
The queen’s eyes narrowed, but she said nothing, and allowed the maid to continue. Beside her, the nanny’s lips tightened, but her eyes gleamed with intrigue.
And... there is also that... servant... His name is Cassian...
At the sound of the name, both the queen and the nanny exchanged quick glances. The queen’s eyes brightened with interest, while the nanny’s fingers twitched slightly, betraying her own excitement.
"Go on," the nanny urged the maid, her voice laced with growing curiosity. "What else did you see?" Her excitement was so bubbling that she almost forgot that she was not alone.
