Chapter 70: Chapter 68: Settling Down

The villa was resplendent with flowers.

Fine wines and delicacies covered the table draped in crisp white cloth, and loud party music had the atmosphere boiling over.

Zhang Shuya was clinging to Lan Yening’s neck, her face radiating excitement.

Around them was a circle of middle-aged women dripping in jewels, alongside an assortment of stylish men and pampered boys.

"Shuya, thank you for celebrating my birthday."

Dressed in a blue Pierre Cardin suit, with long tousled hair, Lan Yening smiled warmly at her.

Zhang Shuya refused to let Lan Yening call her Sister Zhang anymore, believing it made her seem old. She insisted he call her by her name instead.

"Xiao Ning, I owe you for missing your birthdays for the past twenty years. I’ll make up for them all today," Zhang Shuya said as she walked over to unveil a red cloth covering a pile of gift boxes, all of varying sizes and wrapped in exquisite silk ribbons.

As the crowd stared intently, Lan Yening opened the topmost box to reveal a sapphire suit cufflink.

Instantly, cheers erupted from the attendees with a mix of congratulations and envy.

Especially those women’s "second lords." Their eyes turned greedy and jealous as they gazed at Lan Yening.

The second box was opened next, revealing a diamond-encrusted "Astor Constantin" custom watch.

One by one, all twenty boxes were opened. By the time the last box was reached, it held, surprisingly, a piece of paper filled with handwritten text.

"Xiao Ning, this is a film contract. You’re cast as the male lead." This revelation brought the room into a frenzy of uncontrollable cheers.

Among the "second lords" present, many were students from art schools whose ultimate desire was to land a role in a production.

This gift trumped any gemstone or luxury watch in allure.

Because securing a role in a film hinted at fame. Fame not only brought wealth but also a chance to shake off these older women.

"Shuya, this is the best gift I’ve ever received," Lan Yening mused, suppressing his inner discomfort as he gave Zhang Shuya a deep and heartfelt kiss.

The birthday party lasted until midnight.

A still-enthusiastic Zhang Shuya sought to explore Lan Yening’s secrets in the faint dawn light.

His lips were so full, like a rosebud waiting to bloom when they were closed.

That flush of crimson still stood out even in the dim haze.

Unable to resist, Zhang Shuya tasted them.

Lan Yening closed his eyes, his body trembling slightly in the darkness, filled with shame.

Mentally exhausted, he began to hallucinate.

He felt, bizarrely, that what pressed down on him wasn’t a living person but a corpse risen from a coffin.

He even vaguely noted a foul, putrid scent, but enduring it was his only option.

The weight of this situation stirred an intense agitation in him.

Zhang Shuya assumed her allure was what had rendered him unable to contain himself.

Truthfully, Lan Yening only wished to satiate this woman and rid himself of the unpleasantness that consumed him.

Once she had collapsed in exhaustion and fallen asleep, Lan Yening slipped quietly to the bathroom.

He wanted to wash away the "sweat stench" from both of their bodies.

Feeling slightly better after showering, he took out his phone, opened his apps, and noticed Ye Yuwei still wasn’t online.

For some time now, Ye Yuwei had practically vanished, leaving no trace on social platforms.

To Lan Yening, the incident at the mini-theater must have been too devastating for her.

"Wait for me, Yuwei. I’ll make something of myself and then come find you."

Suffering from poor sleep the previous night, Ye Yuwei, her eyes ringed with dark circles, set out to house-hunt with Lv Fangxin.

"Yuwei-jie, I never thought you’d grind your teeth, snore, and fart while you sleep!"

"Shut up. If you keep it up, I swear I’ll push you under the wheels of the car."

Ye Yuwei had reached the limit of her patience with this clingy sidekick.

"Yuwei-jie, I’ll stop talking!" Lv Fangxin promptly zipped her lips shut.

But it wasn’t long before Lv Fangxin timidly glanced at Ye Yuwei and said, "Yuwei-jie, um... can we grab some breakfast? I’m starving."

Ye Yuwei shot her an irritated look, mentally noting, "Is she a bottomless pit? How can she eat this much?"

At a breakfast shop they found, Lv Fangxin ordered two trays of steamed buns, a bowl of porridge, and a salted egg, tucking in with joy.

Ye Yuwei settled for a bowl of soybean milk and a single small steamed bun.

"This is happiness! Back in school, the thing that made me happiest was eating breakfast after morning exercise," Lv Fangxin said, her eyes sparkling as she swallowed a bun in one gulp.

"Fangxin, do you not usually get enough to eat?"

"I’m growing taller, so I’ve been eating more than usual! Yuwei-jie, am I eating way too much?"

"Not really, you go ahead and eat!"

Ye Yuwei, softened by sympathy for this carefree young girl, decided against scolding her.

After breakfast, they went to view the house Yu Manting had recommended for rental.

"Miss Ye, are you satisfied with this house?"

"It’s great!" Ye Yuwei said as she strolled through the three-bedroom, two-living-room space.

The location was ideal—not too far or too close to the city center—well-connected with transportation and peacefully quiet.

She opted for a bigger place because she needed space for rehearsing dance and music.

The décor was simple, featuring just beds, a master cupboard, and side-closet drawers in other rooms.

For Ye Yuwei, this was more than sufficient.

"Alright, I’ll take this apartment." Even though the 4,500-yuan monthly rent caused her some pain, she knew the owner must have given her a discount.

Lv Fangxin was stunned upon hearing the rental cost for the place. In her small county town, such apartments could be rented for about 3,000 yuan a year.

"Yuwei-jie, aren’t you being ripped off? Renting a place this expensive?" Once the landlord had left, Lv Fangxin couldn’t help but ask.

"Apartments like this around here cost at least 6,000 yuan," Ye Yuwei sighed in exasperation.

"Yuwei-jie, is it because you’re including me, so you need a bigger place?" Lv Fangxin asked, looking moved to tears. "We can just rent a smaller one; I don’t mind sharing a bed with you—I’m not even annoyed by your snoring!"

Feeling a surge of frustration so intense she nearly threw a punch, Ye Yuwei thought she might lose her mind if things continued like this.

"From now on, go buy cooking supplies. You’ll be in charge of cleaning the house."

"Oh! Alright, fine."

Lv Fangxin, confronted by Ye Yuwei’s glowering expression, which resembled someone cheated out of her money, nodded in confusion.

They spent the afternoon shopping for cooking appliances, including a rice cooker, an induction stove, utensils, and a small refrigerator.

They went to a mall next and bought two mattresses alongside beddings and other basics.

Lv Fangxin bounded with excitement, like a bird released from its cage.

Despite her appetite, this little girl had a knack for hard work, setting up their apartment immaculately.

She even laid a thick layer of foam mats across the living room floor.

That evening, she cooked a tableful of delicious dishes.

Having not tasted homemade food in ages, Ye Yuwei couldn’t resist eating more than usual.

Especially the crispy, tender sweet-and-sour pork along with the stir-fried green peppers and dried tofu.
