Chapter 64 - 62 Important Meeting
Chapter 64: Chapter 62 Important Meeting
Shenghai’s summers are sultry and long.
This region is also the most developed entertainment hub in all of Huaxia.
A woman in her thirties, slender, sharp-eyed, and sporting short hair, is in a spacious office, gazing at the project proposal displayed on the large screen.
On either side of her sit over twenty people, each jotting down notes diligently.
Her name is Yang Xiaoyue, an officially trained host, though she somehow stumbled into the world of directing.
During her college years, a reality show called "Idol Girls" left a profound impression on her; the female idols who emerged from that program are still active in Huaxia’s music scene today.
Now, as the popularity of talent shows continues to climb across Huaxia,
the nation’s largest video streaming company, "Arrogant Penguin," has decided to produce a girl group talent show, hiring her as the show’s chief director.
For this program, she even brought in her old collaborator, Sun Miao, an experienced screenwriter.
As the presentation of the proposal wraps up, Yang Xiaoyue turns to face the group, her piercing gaze sweeping over everyone’s faces: "Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve spent six months planning this program. We must present to the audience exactly what they want to see."
Seeing her longtime partner glance her way, Sun Miao opens her mouth calmly: "Today’s young people don’t lack material comforts, but they do lack goals to strive towards, even a sense of motivation."
She taps the pencil in her hand habitually and continues, "Our program is about creating a dream that will inspire them to move forward."
Yang Xiaoyue responds with a smile, "That’s right, just as Editor Sun said, you’ve all likely watched ’The Truman Show.’ That film uses cinema to tell a reality show story, while we will use a variety show to narrate a reality show."
Many in the room internally scoffed at Yang Xiaoyue’s remarks.
The Truman Show, a film of such grandeur, and you reduce it to "reality show."
What kind of people do "reality shows"? Only those who can’t make it in the film and television industry.
Naturally, Yang Xiaoyue had no inkling of their thoughts.
Confidently, she continued, "This program is not only about manipulating someone’s life, but also about controlling the emotions of billions of viewers in front of their screens—creating a beautiful dream for them under their watchful eyes."
Sun Miao picked up, "Compared to the ’perfect idols’ cultivated by entertainment companies, young people prefer ’growth idols,’ because they enjoy seeing the real, unfiltered aspects of people."
"Editor Sun, you’ve said so much, but how do we write the script for the beginning of this program?" a screenwriter raised the question.
"The beginning of the program doesn’t require a script," Sun Miao replied with utmost seriousness.
"No script? Then how will these little idols act? Or, shall we say, what are us editors even doing here?" The screenwriter looked utterly baffled.
The others in the room were equally puzzled.
"This program is unlike traditional reality shows. Your role is to observe the little idols’ various performances during the program and then write engaging material based on that," Sun Miao explained.
Another screenwriter suddenly understood, "Ah, I get it. It’s like when we write stories about a certain demographic—we experience their lives and then craft captivating narratives around it."
"Exactly. That’s why we don’t need a script initially. They haven’t started living or competing here yet, so there’s nothing to write," Sun Miao said, spreading her hands and smiling.
"After that, our job will be to guide them into showcasing what the audience wants to see, making viewers develop familial feelings for them, which in turn creates a sense of mission."
"This sense of mission is also why fans are willing to spend their time, energy, and money to ’cultivate’ these idols."
Sun Miao elaborated further on the role of screenwriters in this program.
"You’ve all just listened to Editor Sun’s explanation, which brings us to the toughest part of this program—how to hook the audience immediately, and that means finding little idols who are genuinely captivating," Yang Xiaoyue highlighted the core mission of today’s meeting.
"Finding people who are naturally interesting—that won’t be easy. If they do exist, they’re already the major focus of their respective companies and well-established artists," someone voiced.
"You’re mistaken there. Recently, I’ve been working alongside Director Yang and have interacted with over a hundred companies, encountering countless girls entering this industry," Lu Feng, head of the artist coordination team, chimed in.
His role involves liaising with talent agents, negotiating schedules, and discussing fees.
"That many? How come we don’t usually see them?" someone exclaimed in surprise.
"The current entertainment market is really tough. Many girl groups are essentially small companies’ tools for quick cash grabs; their member quality is hard to describe," Lu Feng remarked with a bitter smile.
"I thought they’d all be like girl groups from Semi-Island!"
"Haha, Semi-Island’s girl groups are essentially like ours; the ones you see are cherry-picked from tens or even hundreds of thousands of trainees," Lu Feng replied.
After these experiences, Lu Feng was struck by the sheer number of "girl group" members in the domestic market.
"So, their singing and dancing abilities are probably average too."
"For the most part, yes. Think about it—finding a girl with a great figure, good looks, excellent dance skills, and superb singing ability is already an extraordinary talent. If she were in the entertainment business, she’d have been recruited by a top-tier company ages ago," Lu Feng lamented the difficulty of finding quality idols.
Everyone fell silent, realizing that "A clever housewife can’t work without rice." Even if they were highly skilled, without competent artists as the program’s centerpiece, failure seemed inevitable.
"Don’t be so discouraged, everyone. You’re setting your expectations for our recruits too high. You expect them to be stunningly beautiful, sing like Zhang Liangying, and dance like poetry."
Yang Xiaoyue tried to lift the mood, her perfectly charming face consistently radiating a smile.
Everyone broke into laughter after hearing this from the chief director.
"The little idols we’re looking for just need to meet basic singing and dancing qualifications. Of course, the higher their skill level, the better. Those who can’t sing or dance must at least be attractive—they’ll serve as background props or stepping stones," Yang Xiaoyue set the criteria for recruitment.
"Now that you’re all clear on our selection standards, let’s make sure we impress viewers with top-notch stage design, aesthetics, and sound engineering. The audio technicians will have a heavier workload," Yang Xiaoyue added with a grin.
The heads of the camera crew, technical team, and post-production group all pledged to complete the tasks assigned by the company.
After the meeting ended, Yang Xiaoyue and Sun Miao remained in the conference room.
"Miaomiao, how’s the initial script for the program coming along?"
Had the earlier attendees heard this, they’d surely be shocked—didn’t Yang Xiaoyue just claim there would be no script?
"It’s ready, but you haven’t finalized your ’stars’ yet."
"They’re hard to find. Most of these little idols lack professional competence, and on top of that, upper management insists on inserting some random candidates," Yang Xiaoyue sighed, her confidence from earlier noticeably fading in front of her friend.
"It’s inevitable. Even if the program isn’t hugely acclaimed, Penguin has invested heavily in it. Dealing with some nepotism is unavoidable," Sun Miao offered consolation.
"This program isn’t just about deceiving all the contestants; we also need to fool our entire team," Yang Xiaoyue lowered her voice slightly.
"Let everyone fully immerse themselves, truly believing they’re creating national idols. Only when both sides’ emotions are genuine can the audience feel the authenticity," a flash of ambitious determination flickered in Yang Xiaoyue’s eyes.
"I’ll do my best," Sun Miao replied, cautiously avoiding making promises.
"Alright then, do your best!" Yang Xiaoyue smiled. "Miaomiao, you should head back now. I still need to report the meeting details to the company."
"Alright!" The woman with an understated scholarly air nodded with a faint smile.
