Chapter 56: Chapter 54 The Edge of Falling
"Yuwei..."
In her sleep, Ye Yuwei heard a familiar voice calling her name.
Forcing her eyes open, she realized it was already broad daylight, and somehow, she’d slept through an entire night.
Wu Jingxiang stood at the bedside, gazing at this weary but still delicate girl, as perfect as a porcelain doll. Her eyes glimmered with a complex emotion.
At this moment, golden sunlight streamed in through the window, bathing Ye Yuwei in a radiant glow, like a goddess illuminated by the interplay of light and shadow.
"Teacher Wu!"
Suddenly, an overwhelming sense of grievance washed over Ye Yuwei, and she burst into tears.
"There, there, sweetheart. With me here, no one will dare to bully you." Wu Jingxiang gently held Ye Yuwei, softly caressing her back, her eyes filled with tender affection.
"Yuwei, you’re too kind. Next time something like this happens, you must fight back."
"Teacher Wu, I was completely stunned at the time. I didn’t know what to do at all." Ye Yuwei lowered her head, teary-eyed, her voice tinged with sobs.
"Yuwei, break your contract with Galaxy! Sign with me, and I’ll make you a superstar," Wu Jingxiang said, tightening her embrace, her gaze deepening.
Ye Yuwei’s heart wavered—she almost agreed on the spot. But she knew that if she accepted, she would become Wu Jingxiang’s caged songbird.
And she didn’t want to betray her friends or become someone else’s plaything.
"Yuwei, what’s there to hesitate about? Even if you sign with me, I won’t force you to do anything you don’t like." Wu Jingxiang’s deep, penetrating eyes seemed to pierce Ye Yuwei’s soul, her gaze tinged with scrutiny and exploration.
"Yuwei, you will always be free." Her gentle, low voice carried an alluring and disarming undertone.
A shiver ran through Ye Yuwei’s body as an inexplicable unease crept over her. She bit her lip tightly, "Teacher Wu, my head is such a mess right now—can you give me some time to think?"
Noticing the faint coldness in Wu Jingxiang’s expression and the way her gaze darkened, Ye Yuwei hastily explained, "If I leave Galaxy now, everything they’ve accused me of will become undeniable... my career would stand no chance."
Hearing this explanation, Wu Jingxiang’s demeanor eased slightly, though her gaze remained sharp: "Yuwei, cleaning up someone’s reputation isn’t difficult. As long as you listen to me, I’ll arrange everything for you."
Ye Yuwei trembled, her lowered face betraying a fleeting sense of inexplicable fear: "Yes, Teacher Wu, I trust you. Just... give me some time."
Wu Jingxiang’s lips curved into a warm smile, her expression once again radiating light like the sun: "Alright, I trust you won’t let your teacher’s sincerity go unrewarded."
With that, Wu Jingxiang withdrew her gaze and stood up slowly.
"Yuwei, rest well. When you’ve thought it through, give me a call."
After Wu Jingxiang left, Ye Yuwei exhaled deeply. Her entire body felt cold as she forced herself to get up and open the window. She caught a glimpse of Wu Jingxiang getting into her Porsche and driving away.
Collapsing back onto the bed, everything around her grew terrifyingly silent.
Ye Yuwei sat there dazed, replaying the events of the past two days in her mind, her heart growing colder and colder.
She was heartbroken.
Utterly heartbroken.
She knew that becoming a top star was no easy feat, and leaving this "river" was even harder.
But the price she was paying still caught her off guard.
Or perhaps, she simply wasn’t mentally prepared for the weight of it all.
Ye Yuwei had thought she’d cry out of sadness, but when she tried, she realized that even her tears felt like a luxury she could no longer afford.
Just as Ye Yuwei wallowed in despair—
Lan Yening was sitting restlessly in the garden, gazing at the vast blue sky.
He failed to notice Zhang Shuya standing coldly on the balcony of the five-story villa behind him, watching him.
Feeling irritated, Zhang Shuya pulled out a slim cigarette and lit it with a match.
The smoke from her bright red lips dispersed into the wind. In the unbroken silence, only the faint crackling of burning tobacco could be heard. Zhang Shuya picked up her phone and made a call.
Not long after, Lan Yening entered the dining room to find Zhang Shuya seated upright at the table.
"Xiao Ning, come eat. I heard you didn’t have much of a breakfast," Zhang Shuya said with a soft smile, her voice gentle. "I had the chef prepare a steak made from imported beef for you."
Lan Yening forced a smile. He wasn’t really hungry but felt it would be rude to refuse.
"Thank you, Sister Shuya. I appreciate all the trouble you’ve gone to."
"Come now—eat up! Steak shouldn’t sit for too long."
Preoccupied with thoughts, Lan Yening was about to sit across from Zhang Shuya when she smiled and said, "Sit next to me."
Lan Yening had no choice but to reluctantly walk over and sit beside her. A maid brought the steak over, and he picked up the cutlery to eat.
Perhaps he was genuinely a bit hungry, or maybe the chef’s skills were exceptional—Lan Yening ended up eating quite a bit.
Zhang Shuya didn’t eat much. Watching him savor the food, her lips curved into a soft smile. "Have some red wine—it aids digestion," she said, motioning for the maid to bring over wine.
Though Lan Yening originally didn’t want to drink, he didn’t want to embarrass her either. He set down his cutlery and picked up the glass.
As their glasses clinked together with a crisp sound, Zhang Shuya drained hers in one go, leaving Lan Yening no choice but to follow suit.
Her star-like eyes gleamed as she curled her lips into a smile, pouring him another glass.
"Sister Shuya, I really can’t drink..."
"Oh, come now, don’t make a fuss! Just pretend it’s grape juice."
Facing her firm gaze, Lan Yening could only take a deep breath and down another glass.
Zhang Shuya gently swirled the high-stemmed wine glass in her hand, sipping lightly as she gazed with an ambiguous smile at the troubled young man.
By now, Lan Yening’s face had turned a flush red, as though two fiery clouds had settled on his cheeks.
Already stunningly handsome, he now looked utterly "breathtaking."
"Xiao Ning, what’s wrong? I feel like your mood’s been low," Zhang Shuya said.
"I’m okay, really... maybe just a bit tired."
Watching the slightly drunk Lan Yening, Zhang Shuya felt her heart soften.
She really liked this pure and clean-hearted young man.
But seeing him look so downcast and pitiful also stirred some irritation within her.
Lan Yening’s every move was, in truth, within her grasp. She knew exactly what burdened his mind.
For an older woman, fresh young men were the most delightful indulgence, while young girls were their greatest annoyance.
Zhang Shuya took another sip of wine, suppressing her irritation.
"Xiao Ning, are you worried that Lv Zhao and Wan Song might still cause trouble for you?"
"... A little, but they haven’t shown up recently."
Lan Yening, who wasn’t good at lying, wore his true feelings plainly on his face.
Zhang Shuya smiled faintly and handed him her phone. "Take a look at this video."
Lan Yening hesitantly tapped the screen, and immediately, blood-curdling screams erupted from the speakers.
The subsequent footage made him tremble all over, cold sweat dripping down his back.
"Sister Shuya, this... this—"
Zhang Shuya’s dark, glinting eyes flashed with cruelty, and her smile deepened. "Xiao Ning, aren’t you happy? They harmed your mother, after all."
"... I... I don’t know. Sister Shuya, what you did... is this really okay?"
"Oh, what’s not okay? They’re evil people—I’m just delivering justice."
Lan Yening fell into silence for a moment, his unfocused eyes staring at her. "What about Zhaozhao? Is he still... alive?"
"He’s just a small fry; he can’t make much of a fuss. After cutting him up a bit, I had him shipped off to Thailand. Whether he lives or dies... well, that’s up to fate."
Her words were light, as if she were discussing something utterly trivial.
But Lan Yening couldn’t help sighing inwardly. In truth, he didn’t even hate Lv Zhao.
In an environment like that, who wouldn’t change?
