Chapter 51: Chapter 49: Sudden Incident

Ancient town, rain as fine as silk.

Ye Yuwei opened the glass window in her bedroom.

A burst of cool air, carrying the fragrance of flowers, swept in, making her feel quite comfortable.

She saw Wu Jingwen, dressed in a snow-white tracksuit, approaching slowly with an oil-paper umbrella in hand.

"Yuwei, come down and give me a hand."

"Okay, Teacher Wu."

Ye Yuwei hurried downstairs and arrived at the villa’s gate, where the latter was already waiting.

"Teacher Wu, what were you doing so early in the rain outside?"

"Precisely because it’s raining that I went out." Wu Jingxiang said, raising a hand.

Inside the oil-paper bag were a few bamboo shoots, still glistening with dewdrops.

"The best delicacy here is bamboo shoots, and the ones picked in this misty rain are the freshest, imbued with the spirit of heaven and earth."

"Teacher Wu, you’ve gone to such trouble."

"It’s no trouble. Since you’re here, I must play the proper host." Wu Jingxiang’s smile was impeccable, a mix of grace and warmth. "Come, Yuwei, let’s make soup with these."

Ye Yuwei, moved and thrilled, took the bamboo shoots and went to the kitchen with Wu Jingxiang.

"Haha, Yuwei, so you don’t know how to cook either. I thought someone like you, out braving the world, would surely know!" Wu Jingxiang laughed as she watched Ye Yuwei struggle clumsily with the cooking.

"I really have no idea. When I went out to work, I always chose places that provided food and lodging."

"Alright then! Let the servant handle it!" Wu Jingxiang said, leading Ye Yuwei out of the kitchen, and the two sat in the living room sipping red jujube tea.

"Yuwei, how old were you when you went out to work? What about your family?"

At the mention of family, Ye Yuwei’s expression turned somber:

"I was born in a northern small town. My father was a state-owned enterprise cadre, and my mother was a girl from the countryside."

"Our economy wasn’t well-developed, so working at a state-owned company was an enviable job."

Ye Yuwei’s voice carried a faint sorrow, her gaze revealing subtle nostalgia.

"My mother married my father because of her beauty. I take after her looks, so I must thank her for that, at least."

Wu Jingxiang couldn’t help but laugh at this self-deprecating remark.

"Later, my dad pulled every string he could to get her a job at the county cultural center. During one of the inspections by a certain leader, he took a fancy to her."

Wu Jingxiang noticed that while Ye Yuwei tried her best to appear calm, her eyes betrayed an overwhelming hatred.

"Under a mix of temptations and threats, my mom became that man’s mistress."

"And your father? Why didn’t he stop it?"

"Him? Hmph!" Ye Yuwei snorted coldly with disdain. "After taking his share of the benefits, he became an utter coward, letting it all happen and venting his anger on me. I couldn’t take it anymore and ran away."

"Later, that leader fell from grace. My mom wanted to divorce him, but he wouldn’t agree unless he got hefty compensation. During one of their quarrels, he ended up killing her by accident."

"Yuwei, how have you endured all these years? Didn’t your mom care about you?" Wu Jingxiang asked, her eyes filled with sympathy.

"I once sought her out, but she drove me away because she wanted to have a son for that old man."

"I had to survive by scavenging scraps, and I was almost assaulted by a gang of thugs."

"Eventually, I escaped that small county town, worked as a waitress, a factory girl, and finally ended up in Galaxy."

Ye Yuwei spoke calmly, as though recounting an ordinary tale.

But beneath this calm was a girl’s blood and tears.

"Yuwei, it’s all in the past now. I won’t let you go back to that life." Wu Jingxiang’s gaze was resolute as she gripped Yuwei’s hand tightly.

After breakfast, Wu Jingxiang took Ye Yuwei out again, this time to enjoy tea and the rain.

"Yuwei, are you cold? Should we get you another layer?"

"I’m fine. I like this cool, damp feeling; it reminds me of my hometown."

"I enjoy it too, though for me, it’s the serenity of rain that I love."

Wu Jingxiang poured boiling water into the purple clay teapot and served the fragrant tea to Yuwei.

Ye Yuwei lifted the cup and took in the aroma deeply—it was rich and lingering.

Meanwhile, at the activity center, Li Jiaqi was drenched in sweat in the dance practice room.

She had to push herself, had to work hard. Without Yuwei’s fortune, she would have to rely on her diligence alone.

As exhaustion overtook her, she grabbed a bottle of water from the floor and gulped it down.

"Something’s wrong! Yu Qingjia has attempted suicide!"

"Somebody help! Call for help!"

"Quick, someone, anyone!"

The cries from outside the corridor left Li Jiaqi frozen in place, her mind blank.

Out of instinct, she rushed out, where chaos reigned as everyone surged toward the third floor.

Suddenly, the once-clamorous noise began to die down. Those frantically moving moments ago now stood still.

Yu Qingjia, who had overdosed on sleeping pills and slit her wrists, was being carried down the corridor.

Li Jiaqi saw the tear-streaked face, tightly shut eyes, and blue lips of the figure being carried past, and felt no joy—only a sharp pang of sorrow and pity.

Following behind the stretcher were Zhang Yu and Xu Mengchen, both crying uncontrollably. Upon seeing Li Jiaqi, hatred blazed in their reddened eyes.

"Get the hell out of the way!"

Zhang Yu gave Li Jiaqi a fierce shove, nearly sending her tumbling down the stairs.

Luckily, Xu Mengchen kept her composure and grabbed Zhang Yu’s arm. "Let’s. Go."

"Everyone back to their places! No more gawking! Anyone caught recording or spreading rumors will face consequences—you all know that!"

Mr. Shen’s face was stony as he issued his warning, throwing a pointed glance at Li Jiaqi.

Once the commotion settled, Li Jiaqi wandered back to her room, dazed.

She never imagined that Yu Qingjia, defeated in internal competition, would resort to such an extreme form of "protest."

Bang! Bang!

"Come in," Li Jiaqi turned to see Lu Bingbing, and her heart sank.

"Captain!"

"Jiaqi, I’m sorry. I’m here to apologize on behalf of Xiao Yu."

Lu Bingbing’s words left Li Jiaqi stunned—truthfully, she hadn’t blamed Zhang Yu.

If it had been Ye Yuwei at the center of such a crisis, perhaps she herself would’ve gone on a rampage.

"It’s fine, Captain. I understand Xiao Yu’s mood, but I—"

"I know what you’re going to say. That resource for the fourth female lead was snatched by Yu Manting herself; it has nothing to do with you or Yezi."

"Captain, I... I don’t even know what to say anymore." For a moment, Li Jiaqi was at a loss for words, her mind in turmoil.

"Focus on practicing. Your birthday performance is coming up. This year, I’ll help arrange it for you."

Looking into the Captain’s gentle and kind eyes, Li Jiaqi involuntarily shivered.

She understood the meaning behind Lu Bingbing’s actions.

Ye Yuwei had already begun threatening the top members’ external resources.

If a stronger talent like Yu Manting were to form a popular pairing with Ye Yuwei, most of Hanoi’s external opportunities would be in their hands, leaving no room for the likes of Lu Bingbing and her peers.

Li Jiaqi wrestled internally. She knew the Captain was using her, but it was an open scheme that she couldn’t refuse—because she, too, wanted Yu Manting gone.

"Jiaqi, do you remember your first stage lightstick from the small theater?"

"Captain, you remember that?"

"Of course. Everyone who stands on that 16-member stage, I remember their first lightstick."

Lu Bingbing pulled Jiaqi onto the sofa. At that moment, Li Jiaqi felt a fleeting sense of illusion, as if the woman before her was a kind-hearted elder sister.

"Your first lightstick group was from your CP fans—’Rainqi Forever.’"

Lu Bingbing’s words struck a chord deep within Li Jiaqi’s heart, and tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Jiaqi, if you don’t work harder, the fans’ lightsticks might soon change to ’Rainting Forever.’"

"...Captain, I’ll leave my birthday performance to you."

Lu Bingbing smiled in satisfaction and gently ran her fingers through Jiaqi’s hair. Her touch was so soft, like threads of silk weaving into the strings of Jiaqi’s heart.

"...Captain."

"Jiaqi, my poor girl. Look at these tears; why are there so many? And your body—it’s so cold..."
