Chapter 75: Chapter 75: Pierre’s Ponder
Pierre held the cheap engagement ring that he picked up from the ground while watching Eve entering a limited edition Bentley, which he assumed was bought by Alex as a gift for her.
He dated and was engaged with Eve for two years in total. It might not look much, but Eve actually had a lasting impact on his life, as she was the first woman whom he seriously dated and lived together with, even though it was under his father’s order.
Despite being fascinated by her beauty, he still had a lot of arguments with Eve, and held a lot of resentments too, because Eve was just so disciplined, strict, and uncompromising. She was all the things that a man wouldn’t want, as Pierre believed that a woman needed to be submissive, at least that was what his father told him.
But now that Eve left him like this, he felt a strange sense of loss, as if he was the one who lost in this game called love.
’Do I like you just because you’re beautiful, or do I genuinely love you because you are Eve?’
Pierre didn’t expect himself to have that kind of question in mind. For the first time in his life, he began questioning whether he could accept Eve for who she truly was rather than portraying the perfect version of her in his mind.
*
Eve drove through the traffic with a lot of anger in her heart. She was pissed, knowing that Pierre still hadn’t changed at all. He was still the same bastard who didn’t have his own voice, still the same daddy’s boy who would listen to all of his father’s opinions without a second thought.
In the end, Eve knew that Pierre was just too immature for a twenty-seven-year-old. He was genuinely unable to think independently.
’So, why did I allow him to enter my life back then?’ Eve had that thought in her mind repeatedly ever since they started dating two years ago. If she could be honest with her heart, she would have to admit that she simply couldn’t move on from Alex, and that’s why she accepted Pierre, hoping that she’d forget him instantly.
Only for her to keep comparing Pierre to Alex.
She never said it out loud in front of Pierre, but Eve was subconsciously treating him strictly, like a mother to a son, because he was genuinely acting like a teenage boy most of the time.
She also knew how many times she yelled at Pierre, so the resentment that he felt might be justified to some extent.
...
’Then, what about Alex? Will he eventually get tired of me because of my constant nagging and arguing?’ Eve thought. They were truly a perfect couple for five years before his lies crumbled. But she didn’t think that Alex was the real him.
In her eyes, the Alex that she dated for five years was just a mere character that Alexander Langford acted out. It became apparent when they had their first argument in the mansion a few days ago.
The fake Alex would sulk, and be angry, but he wouldn’t show that unreasonable possessiveness.
But the real him... he didn’t even try to hide that he was insanely possessive.
At the same time, Eve also had to admit that the real Alex had more passion in him, and made her feel an unfamiliar passion that was long gone.
’Then, which one of you do I need to love, Alex? The real one, or the fake one I dated for five years?’
Unfortunately, Eve couldn’t answer her own question, because she was unsure of her own feelings.
**
Eve parked the car in the basement and used the elevator to the first floor, where the kitchen was located in Alex’s mansion.
She rolled her sweater to check on the time, ’Still enough time to cook something for dinner.’
She put her bag on a chair as she walked to the kitchen, and put on the apron before checking the fridge.
Just as she expected, the mansion’s huge double-door fridge had everything she needed to cook. It had many things she didn’t know existed before, like exotic spices and plants that can only be harvested once a year.
She was interested in experimenting with these ingredients but ended up cooking her usual recipe instead.
Since she didn’t have much time, she decided to make a seafood stew. It was a perfect dish for the cold temperature today.
She prepared all the seafood she wanted to put in, like shrimp, clams, scallops, and cod.
Next, she prepared the spices for the stew.
As she was busy preparing for dinner, a man suddenly walked into the kitchen. He leaned on the wall while staring at Eve from behind.
He crossed his arms and watched her in silence before Eve noticed him and commented, "Don’t worry about dinner. I’m preparing a seafood stew for us, it’d be good."
...
Alex remained quiet for a long time, making her feel uncomfortable as she moved around under this man’s piercing watch, like a small bunny that was about to be pounced from behind.
She couldn’t help but add, "If you have nothing to say, then just stay in the dining hall. It won’t be long."
Alex finally took a deep breath and asked, "Why are you late to come home today? Andrea told me that you left the office before five, and you’ve just arrived home at eight."
"Oh—the traffic is really bad today," Eve lied without thinking twice, not wanting to argue with Alex.
"And it took you three hours to go back?"
"Well, it took an hour to drive from the office to this mansion alone, let alone with the traffic. It makes sense, right?" Eve reasoned.
Alex looked at his woman meaningfully. Eve was still busy in front of the stove, putting all the ingredients inside and turning the right heat.
Alex was burning with jealousy right now. He didn’t know what Eve and Pierre were talking about inside that restaurant, but he saw that bastard sitting at the same table as her right near the window.
