Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Their Sappy Song
The ride home was an awkward one.
Nothing happened between them after that short conversation.
Eve was staring straight at the road while fiddling her fingers nervously. For some reason, Alex’s last sentence was imprinted in her mind, making it difficult for her to move on.
I admit that I never got over you even after we broke up, Evelyn
Alex told her the reason he said that was to immerse himself into their fake couple role, but it was difficult for Eve to believe that because his eyes were speaking the truth when he confessed.
’How come you said you can’t move on when all you’ve done for the past five years was lying to me? Was that love, or you’re just using me as a fun little game?’
Eve had a lot of doubts in her heart, but her train of thought was cut short when Alex began to hum a song while driving.
She glanced at him and saw that Alex was in a great mood. He even smiled while humming a random song—well, not random, because Eve recognized it.
It was the song they often played in their small rented apartment; My All by Mariah Carey.
It was a sappy song that people would sing for fun, but for Eve, it meant a lot for her, because she truly gave this man her all for five years.
Eve’s heart began to ache as she was itching to follow the hum that Alex made. It was their love song, and it was unfair that he kept humming it out, knowing it might incite some reaction from her.
"Can you stop humming that song?" Eve asked, but it sounded more like a demand.
Alex chuckled as if something was funny, and continued humming it.
"What’s so funny?" she asked.
"Hm? Nothing," Alex replied lightly. "I’m just in a good mood, so I hum my favorite song. What’s wrong with that?"
"Oh, come on, that’s not your favorite song. That’s mine!" Eve said as she got annoyed.
"It’s my favorite song, too," Alex bickered.
"No, your favorite is Do I Wanna Know by Arctic Monkeys. Ugh, you keep humming that song whenever you take a shower!" Eve complained.
Alex suddenly laughed out loud, which surprised Eve.
"I didn’t know you still remember that. It’s been two years since we broke up, after all," Alex said. "I guess what you said before wasn’t just an immersion. You really love me for seven years straight."
"You—!" Eve was speechless. Once again, she fell into this scoundrel’s trap. She turned her head away, "Just stop teasing me. Why would I love a lying scumbag like you?"
Alex smiled meaningfully. He was in a great mood right now, so he drove as he continued humming. He had no intention to tease her anymore, so he hummed a different song.
They finally drove back to the mansion, and he parked his car in the basement lot.
Alex followed Eve as the latter quickly got out of the car and went to the elevator.
Alex took a big step into the elevator before it closed because Eve kept smashing the close button.
"Whoa, easy there, sweetheart. Are you that upset because I hummed our song?" Alex asked with a gentle tone, which irritated her even more.
"If you already know the reason, then stop talking," Eve snapped. "It’s already been a long day, the last thing I want is to get upset again."
"Alright, alright, I’m sorry, Miss Carpenter. Do you want me to massage you then?" Alex playfully massaged her shoulders. Eve didn’t fight back at first, but for some reason, she felt that he was feeling her shoulders and neck rather than massaging them.
She looked over her shoulder and glared at him, in which the handsome man simply laughed it off.
Ding!
The elevator opened. They went straight to the second floor because Eve was already tired and wanted a bit of rest before dinner.
Eve and Alex walked out of the elevator, but before they could walk to Eve’s bedroom, they saw a man leaning on the wall near the staircase. He was looking down, busy with his phone, and was wearing a hoodie, so Eve couldn’t get a good look at him.
However, since he could enter this mansion, he was either a house staff member or Alex’s friend.
Eve leaned at the second possibility.
She glanced at Alex, waiting for an answer, and Alex explained, "It’s my colleague. He is here to give me some business reports."
"Business report, huh?" Eve sneered. "With that hoodie and ripped jeans? Looks a bit too informal for a business report, don’t you think?"
Alex chuckled, "Nothing gets past you, huh? Don’t worry, it’s not a big deal."
"I’ve always known that men like you are deep-minded. If you are just a simpleton, you wouldn’t be able to trick me for five years."
"This and that are different."
"Sure," Eve shrugged. "Anyway, I’ll return to my room and let you talk with your business colleague about the business report."
Eve strutted towards the corridor while Alex watched over her. She walked towards the hooded man, as the corridor was close to the stairs. She stared at the man as she walked, hoping to get a glance at his face.
She was a bit curious about what kind of scheme Alex had been cooking behind her back.
However, to her surprise, the man lifted his head, and their eyes met for a second.
Both of them were stunned at the same time, and their one-second gaze became two seconds... three... four...
Their gaze lingered until Alex suddenly blocked their line of sight with his body.
Eve felt a chill coming from Alex despite only staring at his back right now. For some reason, she could sense his anger despite his gentle voice when he said, "I think you should get back to your room, Eve."
"Oh—uhm... okay..." Eve wanted to take another good look at Alex’s business partner, but Alex’s body blocked her sight completely, so she could only leave with this uneasy, unspeakable feeling in her heart.
