Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Hugh Langford (I)
Again, Eve was astonished by the kiss, but she didn’t do anything as Alex pressed the kiss. She closed her eyes and quickly gave in, parting her lips slightly, allowing this bastard to pry inside with his lips.
But he didn’t this time.
He simply pressed his kiss and then let go after a while.
Eve was confused as she slowly opened her eyes and stared at Alex, who still had those eyes brimming with sincerity.
"You are the only woman I kiss with all my willingness, Evelyn. So, don’t you dare to say that you’re just a random woman at the corner of the street, got it?"
Eve was not used to being stared at with such gentleness. It made her heart beat so fast and also made her knees weak. She lowered her head slightly to avoid staring at those blue eyes and nodded weakly, "I-I understand. But what am I going to do next? I’m here to get my revenge against Pierre and my mother, not to go against your entire family."
Eve slowly raised her head to stare back at him. She rarely showed vulnerability, but she was right now, "I’m scared, Alex."
Alex could hardly control himself right now.
If only he was allowed to act by his instinct, he wanted to spoil her endlessly.
He wanted to keep her inside that mansion and never let her step outside, because this world was rotten and cruel, and he knew how sensitive and vulnerable Eve was despite her tough exterior.
Unfortunately, all he could do right now was to take a deep breath to calm his heart, which had been beating like crazy, and assured her, "Don’t be, Sweetheart. I will protect you, and our future child. Just trust me, okay?"
Eve nodded.
She didn’t understand why she was so scared.
After all, she had nothing to lose. Even after she ended the business deal with Alex and left their baby with him, she could’ve just gone on with her life as if nothing ever happened, and she doubted that Alex’s family would try to disturb her peace.
So why was she so scared?
Eve had no answer to that question, but all she could think of right now was to let this man protect her, at least until the baby was born.
"Evelyn, I told them that you already carried my baby, so they will know your worth immediately and will throw their plans into shambles," Alex added because he realized that Eve was genuinely worried about everything. "If I didn’t say that, they would think that you’re just a disposable woman that I used for fun, and we both know that you are far more than that."
Even Eve couldn’t rebuke that statement.
As much as she hated how everything unfolded between them, she had to admit that he didn’t use her for fun. If he did, he would never willingly live inside that crammed rented apartment with her for years, and wouldn’t keep bugging her after two years of breaking up.
He was Alex Langford. He could have any woman with all of his fame and fortune.
"Don’t worry about them. I will take care of them if they dare to harm you," Alex assured her once again. His gaze darkened as he already had a reason to turn hostile against those leeches if they dared to hurt his beloved.
Nevertheless, he wouldn’t attack when unprovoked, as those leeches still had their uses. All he could do right now was to watch over Eve while she would carry their child in the future.
"Mm... then, what should we do next? Should we leave and return to the mansion?" Eve asked. "Our original plan was to scare Pierre and Julia after all."
"Well, just like what I announced to my family in the main hall. We’re going to meet with my father, the current patriarch of the Langford estate."
Eve’s eyes widened.
She shook her head subconsciously as she was too shocked by his words.
"You’re kidding."
"I am not."
"No." Eve shook her head vehemently. "There is no way I’m meeting your dad right now."
"Hm? Why not? You’ve met with my entire family. It wouldn’t take long for my father to know about your existence," Alex smiled. "Relax, my father is just an old bag. All you have to do is smile and nod, then we can leave in peace."
"B-but I’m not wearing a proper dress code, am I? I should’ve worn something more modest..."
"This is already very modest, Eve. You just have beautiful curves, so unless you wear baggy jeans and a jacket, those curves will always be noticeable," Alex commented. He held her hand one more time and pulled her towards the door at the end of the corridor. "Let’s go."
"W-wait, at least let me prepare myself mentally!" Eve exclaimed in panic as she was dragged by Alex to the door.
Alex knocked on the door after Eve told him that she was ready.
The door was opened from the inside by a woman in her late forties, whom Eve assumed to be the secretary or maid, and they walked in side by side.
Eve thought this place was an office since it was inside a golf club, but to her surprise, it was similar to a hotel room.
Sitting beside the window, she saw a man looking in his 60s, flicking his cigar ash to the tray as he watched the golf course.
Eve could only catch his side profile, and though she had seen the picture of this man; Hugh Langford, on the internet, she was still surprised by how eerily similar Alex looked to his father in real life.
It gave Eve the impression that she already knew how Alex would look thirty years from now.
’I guess if our child is a boy, he will have a great gene since both his grandfather and father are handsome men,’ Eve had that passing thought before she quickly brushed it off. ’Okay, that’s ridiculous, Eve. Why are you imagining that when you’re not going to be present in their lives?’
