"What should we do if we can’t finish all this food?" pointing at the New Year’s Eve dinner on the table, Bae Juhyun asked Liu Xin’an with bewildered curiosity.
Liu Xin’an sighed and revealed a bitter smile, "We’ll need to eat these for almost a week."
"Ah?"
"You didn’t think we had to finish it all tonight, did you?"
Bae Juhyun nodded her head in confusion, which was met with an indulgent smile from Liu Xin’an. He reached out to gently pinch his girlfriend’s cheek but was hastily slapped away by Juhyun.
In front of so many people, Liu Xin’an might not care about public displays of affection, but she certainly did!
The feeling of eating the New Year’s Eve dinner actually wasn’t much different from lunch.
If one had to point out the only difference, it was that this dinner came with background sound enhancement.
The big television in the living room was playing a show that Juhyun couldn’t understand, but even though she didn’t understand, she could still sense the cheerful and joyous atmosphere from the program.
The elders at home were particularly interested in the television program; on the other hand, Liu Xin’an and Li Chenglu, the two young people, were just burying their heads and picking out meat to eat.
This made Bae Juhyun, a foreigner participating in the Chinese New Year for the first time, quite puzzled.
"Xin’an, don’t you watch the show? Uncle and Auntie seem to be so focused," she whispered, moving closer to Liu Xin’an’s ear to ask curiously.
Liu Xin’an, without even lifting his head, said, "The Spring Festival Gala. The old ones were good, but the recent ones aren’t that interesting. My parents are just joining in the festive spirit."
"Right, the Spring Festival Gala is getting more and more boring."
Bae Juhyun didn’t really understand the entertainment circle on this side of the world, but the handsome and beautiful artists still made her involuntarily marvel.
The aesthetic standards for entertainment here were starkly different from those in her own country.
In her country, the lighting and filters were top-notch. Sometimes people who weren’t that attractive would appear extremely beautiful or handsome under the enhancement of filters, makeup, and lighting.
But as soon as one steps onto a super-large stage, any flaws an artist has would be infinitely magnified.
Juhyun had her own flaws too. Her appearance was indeed stunning at first glance, but her shortcoming in stature made it difficult for her to appear on some particularly large stages.
When she was on her own, it was fine—high heels and outfits that made her legs look longer could somewhat alter the perceived proportions.
But once she shared a stage with other artists...
Bae Juhyun felt embarrassed just thinking about it.
However, the "colleagues" currently performing on stage all possessed beauty and figures that made it difficult to find any flaws, which made Bae Juhyun, a small-time foreign artist, very envious.
Of course, Liu Xin’an, who was eagerly eating his meal, would naturally be clueless about Juhyun’s curiosity and envy.
For him, there was something more important awaiting him at the moment.
This morning, when he went to offer incense and sacrifices to his grandparents, Liu Zhengjiang had told him that he would talk to him about his mother’s matters after dinner.
This was something he’d been curious about since middle school, and now, he finally had the chance to learn the whole truth.
After quickly finishing dinner, Liu Xin’an took a big gulp of water and then looked towards his father.
Perhaps it was his overly eager gaze that made Liu Zhengjiang feel his son’s expectant eyes upon him. With a helpless shake of his head and a sigh, he put down his chopsticks and stood up.
"If I don’t tell you now, are you going to keep looking at me like that?"
"Hehe."
"Alright, come here,"
Liu Zhengjiang wasn’t in a rush to eat. He nodded his head, stood up, and said to his son.
Liu Xin’an’s expression brightened, and he quickly got up to follow.
"Juhyun, come too. It will be good for you to know about this,"
As he passed by Liu Xin’an, Liu Zhengjiang looked at Bae Juhyun and left her and his own son greatly puzzled with this remark.
Park Jinsuk, who was watching the television, seemed to realize something. She glanced at her husband, thought for a moment, but ultimately didn’t say anything, turning her attention back to the TV.
Leading the two younger ones into his study, Liu Zhengjiang first sat down on the sofa chair he usually occupied, then gestured for them to sit as well.
There were chairs in the study, albeit just ordinary rattan chairs, but they were certainly better than standing.
Once both were seated, Liu Zhengjiang looked at Liu Xin’an, "The matter with your mother wasn’t as complicated as you think. Back then, Jinsuk nearly got sold to someone else’s family to be a child bride. Unable to accept it, she ran away from home. After some hardships, that’s when she met me, who was then working in Lan Island."
"...Being nearly sold to someone else’s family as a child bride doesn’t sound simple at all?" Liu Xin’an was dumbfounded, mainly because his father had so directly answered the question that had piqued his curiosity for over a decade. And it certainly didn’t seem to be a simple matter.
Liu Zhengjiang nodded, a smile appearing on his face.
The Korea of the 90s was a lot more chaotic than it is now.
Plus, Park Jinsuk’s family wasn’t wealthy at the time, so her parents got such a wicked thought.
No, to be exact, such people can’t even be called parents.
Even a tiger doesn’t eat its cubs. Anyone who can do such a thing isn’t fit to be called a parent.
Luckily, Jinsuk had a very close younger brother.
With her brother’s help, she managed to escape from home, boarded a ship to Lan Island, and that was when Park Jinsuk met him, who was at that time a poor young man.
