Carrying a Jurassic on me -
Chapter 32 - 32 32 Crazy Prey_1
32: Chapter 32 Crazy Prey_1 32: Chapter 32 Crazy Prey_1 “One more…”
Yan Fei quietly tells himself: after catching the last one, he’ll start practicing flight.
He never thought having too many hares could be troublesome.
The plan was to catch a few hares and then find a place to practice flying, but tonight, his luck was too good.
In front of him, five or six young people with three or four dogs, were forming a semi-circular search pattern with a wide distance between them, up and down the fields, in search of hares.
As soon as they spot a hare, they would unleash the dogs to chase after it.
Unfortunately, these dogs were just common breed, even the best among them was a mixed breed wolfdog, not one of them had training.
Even if several dogs worked together to chase a hare on soft soil, the odds were really slim.
Besides, these unlucky young people tonight ran into someone who was picking off the leftovers.
Yan Fei had already heard their calls.
They were all young men who probably weren’t necessarily counting on catching any hares, they just wanted to have fun on their holiday night out.
Yan Fei’s instincts were excellent.
He moved along the edge of the irrigation ditches between the fields, watching from a distance as the young people shouted, their voices echoing across the empty wilderness in unison with the dogs’ barks.
One moment of inattention, a hare would suddenly dart out from somewhere.
The dogs, restrained by their slightly sluggish owners, were released and they yowled in pursuit.
The hare desperately tried to escape, its grey form blurring in the moonlight, quickly distancing itself from the clumsy dogs.
Just as the hare prepared to leap over a small trench, a shadow flitted before it.
Before it had time to react, it was in a hole in the ground, and then thrown into a wooden cage.
The cage already held several hares.
After storing the hare, Yan Fei was instantly back in the trench, and the Compsognathus ran along the edge of the trench, disappearing into the distance in a flash.
The foolish dogs finally reached the trench but lost the hare’s scent.
Despite their desperate searches, they could find no trace.
By the time the young people caught up, the dogs had turned this place upside down, but not a single bit of fur from the hare could be found.
Yan Fei had already created a significant distance between him and the others, watching them from afar as they moved on.
This was ridiculously simple.
The phrase ‘watched the stump waiting for rabbits’ really applies here!
During the downtime of ‘watching the stump waiting for rabbits’, if Yan Fei spotted another hare nearby, he could catch it and come back.
For the hares in these fields, this was a complete disaster.
Around two in the morning, the group of young people finally left, cursing and taking their dogs home, Yan Fei was so tired at this point that he didn’t want to chase after hares anymore.
Nine hares!
That was his haul for the evening – about five of which were left behind by the others.
The moonlight this night was too bright.
After Yan Fei transformed into the Pterosaur and only moved a few times, he felt that something was wrong.
The surrounding light was too strong.
If he flew up, he would be visible from who knows how far away.
Thinking about his nine hares, Yan Fei decided to go back and make another cage.
If he couldn’t sell so many hares, he’d just raise them himself.
As for feeding hares, it was easy.
Sweet potato leaves could be used, even if they were dried up.
After all, he only needed to feed them for a few days.
After a good night’s sleep, Yan Fei cut several sticks from the island and hammered in a few nails.
The basic shape of the cage was soon in place, all it needed now was a railing fence of slim sticks.
Although it sounded simple, constructing the large cage kept Yan Fei busy all morning.
Then, he put a few wild rabbits into the cages, along with a bunch of sweet potato leaves, and he was all set.
Next, he was off to the county town.
After catching so many wild rabbits, what if they didn’t sell?
Wouldn’t all his hard work have been in vain?
But when he arrived at the county town in the afternoon, he found that his worries were completely unfounded.
The restaurants were so busy it was scary, and the cages and pools behind the beef shop were almost empty.
Yan Fei’s nine wild rabbits arrived just in time, and Sister Hong handed over an extra twenty yuan in her excitement.
Unfortunately, around mid-August, the moon was so bright every night.
Although this made flying practice inconvenient, Yan Fei was still very enthusiastic because he was making money.
At night, he focused solely on catching wild rabbits, and sometimes, when he was tired, he would transform into a pterosaur and practice running on the ground.
The next day he caught eleven wild rabbits, and although he didn’t catch as many in the following days, by the time school started, Yan Fei had almost earned two thousand yuan from his catches.
This two thousand yuan was equivalent to two months’ salary and bonus of Yan Fei’s parents combined, despite the fact that Yan Fei’s father was a small leader in the office.
After all, the fertilizer factory in Tanghe County was the number one factory in the area.
It turns out that there were fewer wild rabbits and fewer hunters in the plains surrounding Tanghe County.
If this was a mountainous area where wild rabbits are abundant and many people set traps, Yan Fei’s rabbits wouldn’t fetch such high prices.
Yan Fei didn’t even realize that in Wancheng City, this two thousand yuan was enough to buy three to four square meters of prime real estate.
In the small town, needless to say, anyone with an old motorcycle was considered awesome, like Yan Fei’s Uncle Ming.
There were still a few rabbits that he didn’t sell.
He gave two to his parents, telling them that he’d bought them for ten yuan each.
His parents were so elated that they gave him fifty yuan, which was pretty much the same as the price he got from selling.
He also gave two rabbits to Xu Xiaoyan and her classmates, and they received rave reviews.
Once school started, Yan Fei finally hit a good spell.
It started raining, a soft autumn rain that lasted several days.
Although the rain wasn’t heavy, it created perfect conditions for Yan Fei’s flight practice every night.
However, Yan Fei was now more worried about exams than flying.
Accustomed to being invisible at school, Yan Fei drew attention due to his exam results.
His scores in subjects like history and geography were unbelievably high, surprising everyone who knew him.
Overall, he scraped through towards the middle of the pack, although he was still a bit lower than average.
Along with the fight before the break, he quickly became a minor celebrity on campus.
Thankfully, with Xie Dang’en, his desk mate’s “promotion”, he believed Yan Fei’s good grades were down to his high-quality cheating materials and Yan Fei’s miraculous long-distance vision.
Even so, this was diametrically opposed to Yan Fei’s preferred strategy.
Like in elementary school, he wished the teachers and students would continue to ignore him, whether he did well or poorly on exams, listened in class, or handed in his homework.
On the one hand, this meant no one dared to mess with Yan Fei.
On the downside, he started to get noticed by teachers when he slept during class.
Thankfully, classmate Yang Yang was honorably elected class leader in the new class cadre’s official elections.
Given Yang Yang’s temperament, he was still quite accommodating to Yan Fei, and Yan Fei was rarely penalized for tardiness or sleeping in class.
However, it didn’t take long for Yan Fei’s “news” to fade into obscurity in First Middle School of Sancha River Town.
As the students got used to the environment and adequate stories emerged among small town students, rural students, and cramped classroom life, many new “headlines” appeared.
In the face of Yan Fei’s desire to fly, these new stories didn’t stick out at all.
As the days went by, Yan Fei moved steadily and unwaveringly towards his goal of taking to the skies.
His dream of flying was in sight.
