Carrying a Jurassic on me -
Chapter 27 - 27 27 Transformed into a Pterosaur_1
27: Chapter 27: Transformed into a Pterosaur_1 27: Chapter 27: Transformed into a Pterosaur_1 The Pterosaur’s body gave off a rather unpleasant smell.
Yan Fei took a long rest and had examined the Pterosaur intently many times over.
To be honest, the Pterosaur’s physique wasn’t exactly aesthetically pleasing to Yan Fei.
The Pterosaur didn’t even have a tail, and its head and beak were overly large, making it look incredibly awkward.
But whenever he recalled how this Pterosaur stood supreme among the other Pterosaurs on the island, his domineering stature and commanding presence, Yan Fei was left in awe.
Feeling he had rested enough, he stood up and went to a more spacious place.
He gazed at the dead Pterosaur in the distance, envisioning himself transforming into such a creature.
Then, he felt himself suddenly start to grow taller.
His body started to enlarge, his neck grew longer, and a sharp, oversized beak protruded from his face.
His arms seemed to stretch endlessly, turning into bat-like wings that were magnified countless times.
A subconscious flap of his newly formed arms, which had become monstrous wings spanning over ten meters, sent his body tumbling backwards.
In his hurried flurry, a multitude of leaves were swept up, which only accelerated his fall to the ground.
Lying on the ground, he was stunned for quite a while before he remembered that he should transform back first.
By the time he was back in his human form standing at the clearing by the Spring Pool, he still could not believe it.
I can transform into a Pterosaur now!
Even the colossal Pterosaur that commanded over the other Pterosaurs on the island, a Pterosaur whose wingspan was several times larger than my own yard?
He had originally thought it would require eating the Pterosaur to gain the ability to transform.
As it turned out, all he had to do was kill a Pterosaur himself.
The Monkey King needed several years of learning from his master to master the Seventy-Two Transformations!
I just need to kill a certain type of dinosaur to transform into the same kind!
This is…this is…
After calming himself, he changed back into a Pterosaur under the faintly glowing sky.
Imitating the movements of the dead Pterosaur, he took to the ground on all fours, clumsily trotting around the Spring Pool like a newborn foal, not even bothering about the sweet potatoes he crushed underfoot.
It wasn’t until he felt he had adequately familiarized himself with the body did he prepare to attempt flying again.
He lowered his body, with his head forward, chanting in his heart.
One… two… three… type of dinosaur!
And Fly!
With a flap of his wings, he felt himself rising into the air before he could even react.
He flew past the spring pool and crashed straight into the forest on the opposite side, getting sandwiched between two trees.
Luckily his Pterosaur hide was thick, shielding him from injury.
Before he could disentangle himself from between the trees, familiar Pterosaur cries echoed through the sky, identical to the cries of the Pterosaurs whose eggs were stolen daily on the island.
In the blink of an eye, the sky was darkened by them.
They probably mistook Yan Fei for the slaughterer who had massacred countless of their kind earlier, angrily screeching and threatening to swoop down from above.
If not for the dense forest, they might have really charged at him.
Yan Fei was startled.
Although they couldn’t reach him for the time being, their manic state was rather frightening.
After a while of frustrated screeching from the Pterosaurs, who were starting to hurl themselves at the trees, Yan Fei decided to revert back to his human form and return to his little cabin.
Back in his room, Yan Fei oscillated between dazed and amused until the sound of running footsteps outside drew his attention to the time.
Evidently, he was going to be late for school.
From morning till noon, Yan Fei was constantly distracted, occasionally indulging in his own amusement.
He had already had a similar experience, the surprise when he had turned into a Compsognathus, so he was finally able to keep his cool in public despite having realized his longstanding dream of being able to fly.
This lad can finally fly!
It wasn’t until school ended at noon that Yan Fei came back to himself, learning from his classmate’s discussions that today was already Saturday.
He quickly checked his watch and sure enough, it was.
What on earth had this week been!
And then there was the hunger, an extraordinary kind of hunger.
He was already hungry during the early self-study period in the morning.
He had a substantial breakfast, but he was hungry again after two sessions.
The struggle to keep going until now left him almost unable to walk.
Once he was back home and had stepped into the island, he stir-fried and devoured two Pterosaur eggs in one breath before he felt a bit satisfied.
He then began preparing a wild rabbit.
By the time the rabbit was in the pot, he felt that he could eat some more.
So, he ate more.
This wasn’t the first time something like this had happened.
After he became a Compsognathus, he had several days where he could eat a lot.
Then, he constantly had a high appetite.
Now that he could transform into such a large Pterosaur, and even fly, this seemed like a minor problem.
Besides, there were many Compsognathus on the island and the dinosaur eggs would take a while to run out.
As soon as school was over, he headed straight for the county town.
He was familiar with the route now, jumping over walls as usual, and settling in his old spot.
It was fortunate that he was still young and none of the teachers approached him asking how he had gotten in despite him carrying things.
Perhaps she was looking forward to another surprise.
As soon as school ended, Xu Xiaoyan came out.
She didn’t even wait for Yan Fei to call out.
She probably saw the figure behind the tree as she was coming down the stairs and made a beeline for him, followed by the two girls we’d met last weekend.
“Yan Xiaofei, I brought an extra lunchbox today, should I pack a portion for you too?” Xu Xiaoyan said, beaming, as she held up a new lunchbox for him to see.
When we say lunchbox, we mean the kind that is a little shorter and wider than a teacup, easy to carry, and usually including a small bowl for the side dishes.
Like the one Xu Xiaoyan was holding, brand new and seemingly made of stainless steel.
Yan Fei laughed: “Hehe, Xu Xiaoyan, you finally have a conscience!
This lunchbox mustn’t be cheap, right?”
Xu Xiaoyan proudly replied: “That’s right, it cost over a dime!”
Yan Fei laughed again: “Look at my new tool…”
He held up his thermos lunchbox for her to see, which was just a week old and barely used.
“Oh my, how coincidental…” Before Xu Xiaoyan could say anything, Jingjing, one of the girls who had tagged along, made a sarcastic comment.
Despite Jingjing and Xiao Wen’s laughter, Xu Xiaoyan didn’t blush at all.
“Yan Xiaofei, you can wait over there for us while we get our food.”
When they returned with the food, Yan Fei took a sip of the gruel and realized that though it looked like rice porridge, it had a distinct flavor of flour.
After a few sips, he finally understood, they’d mixed flour with as little rice as they could get away with, to ensure the gruel wasn’t translucent.
But seeing the three girls drink it so nonchalantly made it clear they were used to it, so he reluctantly gulped it down.
After a few sips, Yan Fei noticed something was off.
It wasn’t the three girls who were off, but the situation around them.
They had barely started eating when one of the girls passing by greeted them, “Yanfei, you guys are eating here!”
And it wasn’t just one or two.
The bolder ones would say, “Yanfei, did your relatives bring you food?”
Why did she put so much emphasis on the word relatives?
Even bolder ones came straight up and said, “Wow, you three are so lucky, someone is bringing you food, may I see?”
She was welcome to look; but was she looking at the food or at Yan Fei?
And did that other girl just grab a bone and run away?
Was she sure she had just wanted to taste the meat?
After a while, quite a few girls filled the area.
All confident and cheerful, their lively chatter and giggling caused quite a few glances from boys eating at a distance, who didn’t even notice when they were poking at thin air with their chopsticks.
Several times, it became too much even for Xu Xiaoyan, who finally yelled, “Shoo!
Grab a bite and move along!
What’s the point of brandishing your food around…”
The girls merely chuckled and carried on, with a couple insisting on eating right next to them.
As far as Yan Fei was concerned, it didn’t matter.
It was a good day.
And with two rabbits in his cooking pot, there was plenty of meat, he wasn’t afraid they’d eat it all.
What he didn’t know was that gossip travelled fast in a dorm full of senior girls.
The story of Xu Xiaoyan’s affectionate suitor who’d struggled twenty miles across mountains and rivers to bring her rabbit meat, had already spread all over the girls’ dorm at the Third Year of High School.
These girls, the pride of their small town, while holed up in school for hard studying, enjoyed the thrill of a good gossip whenever the chance arose.
According to the rumors, Xu Xiaoyan’s boyfriend could catch fish, shrimp, crabs, wild chickens and rabbits bare-handed, cook food so delicious it would make you drool, and most importantly, he could climb walls and walk on roofs with a pot in hand like a grandmaster.
As for the other rumors, they all stretched the truth, but these girls weren’t looking for accuracy; they just wanted a fantastic story to pass around.
Before long, Yan Fei had become a legendary character.
In short, aside from his tender age, Yan Fei was every girl’s dream man come to life, how could they not be curious?
Yan Fei took it all in stride.
Actually, the problem was the “rice porridge,” which tasted terrible.
He was just trying hard not to look disgusted.
The girls around him thought they were speaking softly, but he heard every word.
But Yan Fei was about to soar into the sky, so he didn’t mind.
If people called him stupid and he didn’t react, they would think he was slow.
But these girls had a good impression of him before even meeting him, and thought that his ability to remain calm and composed amidst all their chatter and laughter was a sign of maturity and grace.
Yan Fei also thought Xu Xiaoyan wasn’t too bad.
While she seemed to be neglected at home, at school, she appeared to be quite popular.
Otherwise, there wouldn’t be so many people talking to her.
After the meal, he got up to leave with his things.
With so many girls around, he felt a bit shy about scaling the wall, so he decided to exit through the main gate.
But, the girls behind him were making such a ruckus, he heard one of them call out, “Hey handsome, why don’t you show us your wall climbing skills…”
Actually, Yan Fei didn’t want to go through the gate since he would have to take a longer route.
Hearing the girls shouting, he turned around to flash a smile at the tittering girls, then ran to the wall and quickly climbed up and over.
On the other side, he could still hear the girls’ laughter through the wall.
