Chapter 386: -Chapter 386-
Lake woke up with his head in his friend’s lap, his nose scrunched up. Maybe it was because they didn’t get the chance to be this physically close together often, because Caspian’s scent felt a little overwhelming.
"Oh, you’re up," Caspian smiled and then shot to his feet, "I was supposed to go to the bathroom half an hour ago..."
Lake watched him dart out of the room, shaking his head a bit. Caspian could have just shoved him to the side to relieve himself, with how deeply Lake had been asleep, he wouldn’t have even noticed.
He yawned and stretched, immediately reaching for his phone to check if Davian had called while he was asleep but found nothing. Davian did say he would call at night but Lake was anything but patient.
Caspian poked his head back in, "Lake, what do you think about going on a drive?"
Lake rose to his feet, "A drive?"
"You’ll be driving," Caspian gave him a cheeky grin.
"Aren’t Keith and Peter tagging along?" He asked as he walked over, he didn’t mind a drive, it would be perfect to get him fully awake.
"In a different car, there’s no space in mine." Caspian explained as they walked side by side down the hallway.
"You have a car?" Lake cut in.
"I do," Caspian said with a flourish, pointing at the blinding blue car parked in front of the mansion. "Asher got it for me."
Lake thought about it, he would get a car if he asked for it, but Davian had practically given him everything he owned... The flashy car wasn’t enough to take his mind off Davian, and it was only the first day.
They were followed out of the mansion by Peter and Keith in a different car, the bodyguards keeping a reasonable distance behind them.
It was late in the afternoon, the sun still had warmth but the wind in their hair was cool, a perfect combination.
With Caspian’s help, Lake got the roof down, slowly cruising down the road.
This was the perfect scenario to complain to Caspian about Davian’s absence but he was still keeping Asher’s silly secret so he clammed up and instead talked about how Caspian hadn’t gotten around to learning how to drive after all this time.
They didn’t spend long on their drive, returning to the mansion before the sun set. Although, Caspian hadn’t wanted it to end, a nervous Peter and Keith had forced them to end it.
They must already have their hands full with Caspian, adding Lake to the mix was nerve-wracking for the men, and with good reason.
Caspian was pouting by the time they got back to the mansion, "Are you leaving now?"
"I don’t know, Davian should be calling any time so-" soon.
Lake’s phone rang then and although he hadn’t even turned the car off, he hurriedly got out to pick it up. Behind him, Caspian made a sound of dismay, certain that his friend would be leaving then.
"Hey," Lake said as soon as he picked, all smiles. Davian had called far earlier than he had been expecting but he had no complaints.
"Hi," Davian’s familiar voice was calming, "I had to go to a welcome event."
Lake noticed the background noise for the first time, "Still there?" He asked with reasonable surprise. Before he took over the Black Mafia House, Davian never spent more than half an hour at events.
"I have to make a good impression," He muttered gruffly.
Lake smiled, the expression souring when he realized that Davian couldn’t see it - maybe they could do a video call at night.
Davian was taking this very seriously, it made Lake proud of him. "You-"
There was an interruption on Davian’s end and after a hurriedly said goodbye, the call dropped again. Lake stared at his phone for a few seconds, trying not to focus on the emotions swirling in his middle.
This was really hard...
Unaware of what was truly going on, Caspian was nervously waiting off to the side. "Is he on his way?"
Lake turned to his earnest friend, "I tried to convince him to let me stay the night."
Caspian’s eyes lit up like two spotlights which then slowly dimmed, a frown on his pretty face. "That’s not right. Davian would never let you do that..." He trailed off, his brows furrowing. "Actually, before that, he would never let you spend the entire day here alone- What’s going on?"
Lake grimaced as Caspian quickly put it all together, it was honestly impressive that he had gotten away with it this long. "I-"
Caspian leaned closer with alarm on his face, "Did you two have a fight?"
Lake’s bottom lip jutted at that, "No, he went for a conference and refused to take me," He complained.
"Aww," Caspian closed the distance between them and took his friend’s hands. "How long is the conference?"
"Five days," Lake’s face crumpled, his eyes filling with tears. He didn’t realize how much he needed to talk about this until he could open up to Caspian.
"Hey, it’s okay," Caspian pulled him into a hug, patting his back. "Five days will be over before you know it. Why don’t we go grab a snack from the kitchen?" He tagged on, hoping to distract his friend who looked like he was well and truly going to break down.
Caspian never brought it up because he knew it was a sensitive topic, but he had always been curious about Lake’s true feelings for Davian. But his friend practically crying in the other’s absence had put him straight on that.
A sweet treat did shake Lake out of his almost crying fit, Katya had been flustered when they came to the kitchen, the cook outdoing herself to get a chocolate-filled pastry ready in record time.
Caspian led his friend out of the bustling kitchen, reminding Katya to send more snacks. If Lake was too busy eating, he wouldn’t be crying.
"Did Asher ask you to keep it a secret from me?" Caspian asked.
He led them to where his gaming console was kept, his plan was to keep Lake constantly occupied so that his friend didn’t constantly think about Davian.
