Chapter 282: -Chapter 282-
Davian was content now that Lake’s attention was back on him. "I can have Arthur arrange lunc..."
"No!" Lake said in a rush, backtracking as soon as he said that. "I mean I can cook lunch by myself just fine."
Davian was unimpressed by that solution, "Not happening," He deadpanned.
"You were fine with me cooking breakfast a few hours ago," Lake pointed out.
Davian grimaced at the reminder, "How about I order something?"
Lake hesitated, as long as it wasn’t going through Arthur, he supposed it should be safe to eat.
"Fine," He acquiesced, tucking his legs underneath him.
Lake glanced down at the outfit he had on, it was still early enough for him to make the trip to his apartment and back, he couldn’t keep wearing just Davian’s shirt.
So he waited for the Alpha to make the call and return before talking about it.
"I need to get my things from my apartment-"
"I’ll have someone bring them," Davian was quick to cut in.
"Oh," Lake said in mild surprise, "Thank you. What room will I stay in?"
"Here." Davian blurted out before he could filter his words, keeping a poker face on.
"Yeah, no can do," Lake was quick to shut that down, "I’ll just take the next room in that case."
Davian fell silent, his thoughts racing. He hadn’t meant to say that but it didn’t mean that he planned to let Lake stay in a different room.
There was a way to satisfy them both, but that would mean opening the doors to his parents’ rooms.
He hadn’t done that since they died, and it said a lot that he was considering that now.
He could also remodel another set of rooms to have connecting doors but if he didn’t revisit the ghosts of his past now, then when?
"I can take the next room, right?" Lake said uncertainly.
Davian had been the one to offer to let him stay at the mansion, and he wouldn’t hesitate to take his agreement back if his only option was sharing the Alpha’s bedroom.
There were countless rooms in the mansion, it was ridiculous.
"I’ll have your new room set up by tonight," Davian said instead without giving any additional information.
Lake wanted to confirm that it was, in fact, not the room they were currently in, but he decided to wait and see.
If Davian just moved his things from his apartment to this bedroom then one of them wouldn’t be sleeping in the room that night.
"I’ll be right back, don’t move." Davian said as he pulled a shirt on, reluctantly leaving the room.
Lake just watched him with a blank expression, getting comfortable on the bed.
He still hadn’t made a move to leave, so he couldn’t understand Davian’s worsening paranoia.
But other than being too clingy, he had nothing to complain about the Alpha - maybe life was finally handing him a boon after dealing him unfairly all of his life.
His hand absently drifted to his flat stomach, lost in thought.
He should go for a checkup... his expression turned sour. Were sleeping drugs bad for the baby?
Lake needed to deal with the matter of the tampered food, he hoped to use it to get rid of Arthur and Matilda at once.
But he still didn’t know enough to prove that they were both involved in it.
He didn’t want to hurriedly play the card and lose the chance to get rid of them at once.
For now, he would just make sure that those two made no contact with their food.
Lake sighed and pushed his hair out of his face, he would have to discuss going for a checkup with Davian.
It was ironic, just when he was trying to figure out what to do with himself, life decided to hand him a baby to keep him busy.

Davian didn’t exactly get to take his walk but sitting in his study for a while helped to straighten out his thoughts.
Sorting through his voicemail was also a great way to distract himself.
It felt like the past month had just been awful, work was more monotonous than usual, his inhibitors and his rut cycles kept acting up.
But he couldn’t complain, not when it gave him a child and a mate...
Well, saying he got a mate was a very generous way to phrase it.
He hadn’t exactly given Lake a choice, in any of this. He was being rather selfish asking him not to leave, but he couldn’t help it.
He had already done enough to the Omega, so he couldn’t even address the fact that Lake had kept his mating mark hidden all this time.
He wasn’t upset, he just wanted to know how Lake felt about it. It wasn’t like he could take the mating mark back.
Davian ended up staying at his study longer than he intended, shooting to his feet as a healthy dose of panic shot through his veins.
The food he had ordered was here but the need to see Lake was almost strong enough to make him want to check on Lake before grabbing the delivery.
Almost... because a few minutes later, he was striding to his bedroom, nearly mowing down the door in his haste.
All to find it empty...
While waiting for Davian, Lake had gone to the bathroom, stopping at the counter to wash his hands and splash some water on his face.
Water stained the edges of Davian’s sleeves and the collar of his black shirt.
A loud slam made him jump and look over his shoulder to find a harried-looking Davian standing in front of the broken bathroom door.
Lake’s startled expression turned into one of exasperation, "There’s a doorknob."
"I thought you left," Davian said guiltily.
Lake had expected that excuse so he just sighed and shook his head. "Is the food here yet?"
"Yeah," Davian mumbled.
Lake walked past him to the bedroom, getting over the ruined door. He wouldn’t be staying in this room tonight though.
