Chapter 268: -Chapter 268-

Caspian couldn’t shake off his worry for Lake, the journey back to Haines occupied him for most of the day, however.

Spending the trip back with his mate in their shared car, his divorce papers in his possession made it difficult to dwell on the despondent thoughts of his new friend.

Jael was waiting for them outside the mansion when they got back much to Caspian’s surprise.

It was still mid-afternoon so hadn’t expected to meet the Beta at the mansion, certain that he was out working.

"Finally home," Caspian breathed out with a contagious smile on his face.

Jael had been the one to help him out of the car, and he walked towards the mansion with him, leaving Asher behind.

"I missed it so much," He added with a sigh.

Even though he had managed to return sooner than he dreamed while getting the divorce, the days spent away were too much.

"The staff has been complaining about your absence," Jael cleared his throat, looking right ahead.

Caspian shot him a look, blue eyes bright. "I didn’t think you’d be around when we returned."

"I had an early day today," Jael said as they started up the stairs.

"I missed you too, Jael," Caspian said with laughter in his voice.

When they got to the top of the stairs, Katya and Patty were waiting impatiently for him, Katya charging right over.

Patty was much recalcitrant at the sight of Jael but her excitement at Caspian’s return made her more forward than usual.

"We really didn’t believe you would be returning today," Katya was saying, her eyes glassy as her smile stretched out.

"J-Jael wasn’t sure either," Patty added, shooting the Beta a borderline frightful stare.

Caspian let the chef and accountant fuss over him, Jael staying close by.

Soon the entire mansion had heard about his return, maids and kitchen staff popping in to welcome him.

He had barely been gone for more than four days, and yet they were all acting like he was gone for a few years.

In the chaos, he momentarily forgot about his mate and completely forgot about reaching out to Lake.

"...Had lunch yet?" Jael asked when everyone dispersed.

Patty and Katya had to return to the kitchen and the maids had to return to their duties, so it left just him and Jael in one of the second-floor living rooms.

Now, Caspian remembered his mate, looking around instinctively to find him. "Not quite," He mumbled absently, "Where’s Asher?"

Jael had ignored the Alpha’s dark stare piercing his back when he took Caspian away, "Sure you came back with him?" He asked dryly.

Caspian’s brow dropped low on his head, suspicious. "What did you do?"

"You wound me-"

"Jael," He interrupted the Beta’s blank-faced theatrics, a little worried.

"Sulking in your room," Jael supplied helpfully, starting for the door. "I’ll have lunch served," He tagged on as he slipped out of the room.

Caspian sank into the sofa for a few seconds just breathing in the familiar scent of the room.

He never imagined that a day would come when the mansion would be more of a home to him than the Pack house.

But it did. He couldn’t even think of the Pack house with nostalgia, all it held were his past trauma and demons.

Caspian shot to his feet and started for his bedroom, he needed to quickly freshen up from the road before lunch.

He also needed to check up on his mate - he didn’t at all doubt Jael’s words.

Jael already knew about the divorce proceedings. Asher often had baseless squabbles with him but his mate was always quick to tell Jael what was going on.

Caspian didn’t mind, he was just as bad. Jael wasn’t always the best listener but the Beta always had a solution up his sleeve.

He found his scowling mate in their bedroom as he was told he would, the expression immediately falling off his face when he stepped in.

"I’m sorry I ditched you in the car," Caspian said lightly, pressing a kiss to his forehead as he walked past him.

He really wanted to take a quick shower before lunch but he was worried about keeping Jael waiting.

"Jael said we should get ready for lunch," He kept talking, bending over to take off his shoes. "Are you going to-"

Caspian’s words trailed off as he rose to his feet to find Asher right in front of him.

He had been about to ask his mate if he would be showering before lunch. He couldn’t make a decision himself so he planned to just do whatever Asher decided on.

"Marry me," Asher said with a straight face, the Alpha’s hazel-gold eyes peering right at him.

"W-What?" Caspian tried to take a step back but Asher didn’t let him, pulling him closer by his waist.

Asher’s next move was to go down on one knee while holding his hand, "Marry me." The Alpha repeated.

"O-Okay... but do you w-want to shower though?" He stammered lightly, caught off guard.

It wasn’t the first time Asher had mentioned marriage, and they were already mated so a wedding was merely a formality.

So he had no issues with it, he just didn’t expect Asher to be this intense about it.

"Together?" Asher shot to his feet, sharp teeth flashing as he grinned.

Yeah, no. Not before lunch, at least.

"You know what? I think we should shower after lunch." He threw his arms around his mate’s shoulders, needing to stand on his tiptoes.

"Why?" Asher demanded, back to scowling. "Jael can wait."

"I’m hungry though," He let his mate know, knowing that that was the easiest way to convince him.

"Let me help you with that," Asher offered when he said that, dropping down to one knee again.

Asher seemed to have so much energy now that they were back in the mansion.

On their way here, he had just been short of brooding but Caspian wrote it off as him being busy working because he had been scrolling on his phone and making calls.

But he didn’t mind it, laughing when he lost his balance as Asher tried to take his shoes off and he fell on the Alpha, sending them both tumbling to the carpeted ground.
