Chapter 234: -Chapter 234-
Lake was settling into his new apartment nicely. His internal clock was used to waking him up early, so he was seated on a stool at the kitchen window, holding a steaming cup of coffee.
He had underestimated just how empty his days would become now that he was out of a job.
For the first time, his complete lack of friends was glaring, and he could only watch television shows for so long.
And other than simple meals, he hadn’t been able to bring himself to bake or make anything elaborate.
There was something to be said about having too much time on your hands because it made it much more difficult to get tasks done.
So to break the monotony, he would be making a shopping trip that morning.
Maybe doing something different would change the impending loneliness up ahead.
Lake made a quick breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon, choosing a clothing store at random and taking a cab there.
He nodded politely to the security guard in front of the glass doors, returning the cashier’s wave as he walked deeper into the store.
There were others shopping although it was morning on a weekday. These people lived vastly different lives from him.
Lake mostly browsed, flinching at the prices and wondering if he should have just gone to a thrift store instead.
It was just clothes, he didn’t see why they had to cost so much.
His attention was caught by a row of expensive formal pants, it reminded him of the ones Matilda wore.
Even if he could temporarily afford to by them now, where would he wear them to? He would look so out of place in them.
Lake spun around, intending to march right out of the boutique. Coming here was a mistake, he should have just spent the day watching shows again.
He bumped into a pair of shoppers hidden by another row of clothes, stumbling back with an apology on the tip of his tongue.
"Lake!" The shopper he had bumped into said instead, speaking up first.
"How nice is it to bump into you again," Caspian was saying, the Omega looking gorgeous as always.
Beside him was a lady who looked like she worked at the store, harmless curiosity on her face.
Lake accepted Caspian’s hug easily, breathing in a mouthful of sugar and flowers.
The Mafia King’s mate was the very last person he expected to run into.
He also didn’t expect Caspian to act so familiarly like they were best of friends.
"Do you shop here often?" Caspian asked with unmasked excitement, holding his hands.
"This is my first time here," Lake went with honesty. "I didn’t know you were a regular here."
It was no surprise that Caspian would be a customer at such a high profile boutique, what was surprising was why he thought this store was a great option.
"This is actually my second time here," Caspian leaned forward to whisper conspiratorially. "But Marge was so helpful last time, I had to come back."
Lake flicked his eyes over to the shopping assistant who flashed him a smile, a tad uncomfortable.
It felt like he was pretending to be who he wasn’t. Being here in this expensive store, discussing with Caspian like he was rich.
"I actually was about to leave," Lake pulled his hands away from Caspian’s warm hold. "I don’t think this is the right store for me."
"That’s because you didn’t get the right shopping assistant," Caspian said sweetly.
And Lake really appreciated it so he didn’t want to take off the other Omega’s rose-tinted glasses by telling him bluntly that it was because he couldn’t afford it.
"I’ve been here before, so I can show you around." Caspian immediately offered himself the position of shopping assistant, much to Lake’s surprise.
"Could you help me pack up the things I already got?" He added to Marge who enthusiastically went off to do as she was told.
"You don’t have to cut your shopping short to help me out," Lake pointed out carefully.
Caspian snorted, "I hardly did any shopping, I never know what to get." He admitted honestly.
Lake could see that considering the myriad of clothes that had been in the Omega’s dresser.
"Maybe getting to see your preferences might help me out," He said in such a way that Lake couldn’t turn him down.
But realistically speaking, Lake was incapable of turning Caspian down from the very start.
"My preferences aren’t exactly chic, I mostly just wear t-shirts and ripped jeans." Lake gestured at himself.
"Maybe I should get a couple of ripped jeans," Caspian mused.
"No, don’t," Lake panicked.
Outfits like that wouldn’t suit Caspian’s delicate beauty. "Just go with clothes you like..."Caspian held onto his arm and pulled him deeper still into the store, and Lake had no choice but to follow.
"You know, I mostly wore ratty shirts and worn-out jeans." Caspian opened up as they browsed through fashionable tops.
"Me and you both," Lake muttered before he could stop him, freezing up when that made Caspian go quiet.
The blonde Omega laughed at his words, easing his panic. "Why don’t you try this on?" He reached out and grabbed a random outfit.
The silk top Caspian had taken off the row had a thick band for the neck and left the shoulders and upper arms uncovered.
Lake blanched at it, "I’ve got nowhere to wear that to," He turned down his offer.
"We can go out for lunch together," Caspian was quick to counter, crystal blue eyes alight. "Pick out an outfit for me so we’re even."
Lake still hesitated but now he wasn’t sure why. He didn’t even have to get the clothes, he just had to try them on.
He had been the one to complain about being lonely and then back away when Caspian tried to reach out.
"Deal," He agreed in a split-second decision-making.
Caspian was dressed in sweats and a printed shirt; they might be more alike than he once thought.
